I had a somewhat random thought after watching the new Rebels Season 2 trailer, because of the presence of A-wings and B-wings. It occurred to me that whereas the galactic "common" might sound the same as our English, their written language is quite a bit different. As far as I understand it, Aurebesh is the written language for common. Here's a link to one of the wiki sites I found.

At any rate, you can note that the symbols for "A", "V", "X", and "Y" are all significantly different in shape from the symbols we currently use in our "latin" alphabet.

What I found interesting is that an A-wing is shaped like OUR letter A, not theirs. Same with V-wings, X-wings and Y-wings. It seems pretty obvious that they are named after the letters of our alphabet because of their shape, so it seems like a minor (if humorous) inconsistency.

You could take it further and discuss the use of our own alphabet in their various ship and trooper designations, such as "TK421" (a stormtrooper designation), which should have sounded like "Trill Krill 421", but I don't know that it's worth getting that far into it. An argument could be made that it's simply that what we're watching is a "translation" anyways.

I don't actually think that you can make that same "translation" argument for the alphabet-shaped/named starfighters though, since they're named after the letters WE use. The shape of the starfighter doesn't change just because you're watching the film in Korean, for example. Whatever the symbol is for "X" in Korean, I doubt it resembles an X-wing.

Anyways, maybe I'm missing something that would clear all this up. Maybe Aurebesh doesn't even exist in the new canon, though I believe it does (can't think of any specific canon material that references it, though we do see the Aurebesh symbols to some extent in the PT and Clone Wars). Please feel free to chime in - I'm interested to hear your thoughts on it :)

Haha.... thanks for the link? I actually did read it before I posted this, though I don't see any further link to the ship names being what they are in that thread...
