BB-8 was cute and I liked him. But was it really worth replacing R2-D2's usual role as "hero droid" with the BB-8 character? Think about it, replace all of BB-8's appearances with R2-D2 instead and it would arguably have been an even better and more "Star Wars-y" feeling film.

Clearly, Disney put BB-8 into TFA to sell new original merchandise. (They also have shares in the Sphero company too. Every Sphero BB-8 sold increases Disney's profits too).

Modify the story to have R2-D2 carrying the map sections around from the start, he's now Poe Dameron's droid since Luke vanished. Then the First Order show up on Jakku and Poe orders R2 to run off, eventually meeting Rey. (And oh yes, get rid of the silly "sleeping droid" sub-story too. I didn't like that. ;) )

I agree with you in that i too didn't like R2-D2's story in this film. What makes him suddenly turn on at the end???
I also definitely agree that BB-8 was created, with the money it could make by selling merchandise, in mind, but regardless, i believe BB-8 was perfect for this film.

In my opinion BB-8 is far cuter, more charismatic, has more personality and is more relate able than R2-D2 ever was. Obviously you could never replace the R2, but if you replaced BB-8's role with R2's in this film, it wouldn't have been as good. Period. BB-8 feels just as star wars-y as R2 did in my opinion.

Also doesn;t make much sense that R2 would be Poe's droid. Where would R2 be when Luke dissapeared? How would R2 get into Poes hands?

Although i didn't like R2 story, i loved how in the end they both came together to complete the map to Skywalker. Loved that.

Pretty crazy to think about, but some of the best (funniest/most meaningful) scenes, was because of BB-8.....a DROID. His importance in the story, and his interactions with the characters like Finn and especially Rey is what i loved about BB-8 and I don't feel like it would have been the same with R2.

Just my opinion. I loved BB-8!

    BB8 vs R2?
As much as i liked the soccer droid, R2 wins, even if he would be in a coma(pwned)
oh wait, what is this thread about again?;)

As much as i have my probs with the movie, Baby eight is a home run by JJ and it could be interesting to see them together in the future.

I like both. Anyway the new trilogy needed a new friendly droid r2-d2-like, it's not for the money. What if they kept r2-d2? Fans worldwide shouting: same movie!!!!11 It's a reamke!!1! We already had enough OT elements in this movie. Then, of course, it does bring money, but I wouldn't consider this fact as his main role.

BB 8 also let them do more gags without adding to R2's functions, which were added to quite heavily in the PT, to the dismay of some fans.

Before I watched the movie, I kinda resented BB-8, thought they were trying to replace my favorite droid R2. But once I seen the movie I really kinda liked him. After I watched it for the second time, I decided BB-8 is just way cool and doesn't take anything away from R2. The Star Wars Universe is plenty big enough to have two awesome droids.

I was going to say this myself. When they added rocket boosters to R2 in the prequels I was like "Check, please!". And some of the gags and situations BB8 was in would not have worked for R2 without making him faster and better. It would be too jarring. R2 is R2 and we all love him. But BB8 is a great addition to the family and I look forward to seeing if / how they interact in the next movies.

Artoo would not have worked in most of the scenes. He isn't a fast droid.

Suggesting BB8 was made just to sell toys is ridiculous also. It is possible to have new idea for what stuff could look like 30 years later.

I'm not choosing between the two, both are fantastic for different reasons.

I worry about BB-8 upsetting the classic "two's company" partnership of R2-D2 and C-3PO and making it an uncomfortable "three's a crowd" trio of droid characters. I'd like to see BB-8's role and screen time in VIII and IX reduced, appearing only when needed, such as if Poe's on a mission somewhere. ;)

I'm pretty sure, just like Luke, R2 D2 will have a huge role to play in the next movie! As for BB8 I was pleasantly surprised at how much I did like it, considering it does appear to be a product of Disney's usual comedy sidekick that seems to ruin every damn movie they ever made! Now, what I'd like to know is which would win in a fight? R2D2 with all his gadgets or would BB8 just simply run rings round him and eventually wear down his batteries? Celebrity Droidmatch, anyone?

    I like R2-D2... How could I not?

But realistically, think of how rapid technology advances in our comparitively primitive world and then realise that at least 50 years have passed in a technologically advanced galaxy with numerous linked worlds and different species technology types.

So how many models of robots must have been made in the Star Wars universe over that period of time? Hundreds? Thousands?

Surely, many of them would have been duds of course, but some of them would obviously be far superior to R2D2 by now... no matter how much you tried to update his software.

It's only logical to add new robot models in the new movies. To not do so would just be silly and unrealistic.

However, R2D2 cannot be replaced. He is a unique personality. I hope he is in all of the new movies.

But... but... they are still using X-Wings and TIE Fighters, 30 year later! Still don't know how BB8 fits so perfectly in Poe's X-Wing, given its much smaller size, particularly in diameter and does it have attachments like R2 to fix loose actuators?

As an OT fan who goes back to 1977 and a lover of R2D2, BB-8 really won me over. I thought he would be the Jar Jar of this trilogy after seeing the trailers, but I was dead wrong. I'm a firm believer that each OT character should be fazed out during the ST to give the new characters their story. R2 should be with Luke and if he dies or whatever his fate, R2 should go with him as BB-8 can carry this trilogy.

You did notice the X-Wings were different from the OT, right?

They were more like the original McQuarrie drawings.

Also, it is clear Poe's X-Wing is different to the rest, and considering BB8 is his droid, he might've had it modified.

Good point, well made, thank you! Would have thought Poe would have coloured coordinated BB8 to match the X-Wing, but then maybe it would have looked too sinister? Lol BB8 and sinister just don't go in the same sentence! (Kinda funny how I always refer to R2D2 as he yet BB8 as it!)

OT X-Wings were the 'Incom T-65' model
TFA X-Wing was the 'Incom T-70' model, which is more closer to the original Ralph McQuarrie design for the X-Wing. ;)
