From the lovely and hospitable Twitterverse, a few reactions to the movie:

"jj abrams doesn't know how to write female characters. period."

"don't care that this is a spoiler but the fact jj abrams had the audacity to make the latino lead a flirty ex drug dealer has finally hit me and i am overcome with fury"

"can someone give me jj abrams address and the keys to his garage because- no i'm not holding a hammer- no seriously i'm not i just wanna see his cars"

"if i ever see jj abrams on the street, it’s on sight"

"JJ Abrams set out to reunite the Star Wars fandom, and he might have achieved just that. Everyone hates #TheRiseOfSkywalker "

"F___ YOU JJ ABRAMS F___ YOUR ENTIRE EXISTENCE BEN SOLO WAS MY BABY WHO DID NOTHING WRONG. HE DESERVED HAPPINESS AND YOU TOOK IT AWAY FROM HIM YOU SADIST"

"you kinda have to respect the way that JJ Abrams, one man, ruined *both* star wars and star trek for a generation. the man hates nerds and he lives by his convictions."

"JJ Abrams stole the legacy of Luke Skywalker and gave it to the Dark Lord of the Sith's grandchild. Let that sink in."

"So Rey stole Anakin's legacy and rendered the actions of all legacy characters before her, pointless smh. Wtf is the point of Obi Wan now? Qui Gon's sacrifice? Luke redeeming Vader? What was JJ Abrams thinking? I'm actually devastated."

    We will not survive this!

Meh....Twitter BS coming from the left or right is just public brain farting broadcasted to the world. I guess it is one of the benefits of getting old. It used to get me cranked up about this issue or that to some degree but now the whole back and forth, one side to the other just strikes me as just a continual tempest in a teapot.

That's my favorite! :D Gotta laugh at some of these people. Movies are just too much to handle for some. ;)

Yeah a friend of mine was sure that the end would be Ben and Rey being married and living happily ever after and now she is devastated and hates the movie...

“When you get a situation where you have so much hype and anticipation, it can’t possibly live up to that,” Lucas said. “I’m fully aware that some fans are talking themselves into a situation both in the fact that they’ve gotten much older--the film is made for young people--and the fact that they have these amazing expectations which the film can’t possibly meet.”- Lucas on the release of TPM, 1999.

If you're a fan because of the ST. You're a fan. If you're a fan of your precious OT, you're a fan. If you're a fan of the PT, you're a fan. If you're a fan of anything Star Wars you're a fan.

Yea, if you are looking for something you'll find it. Especially if that thing is negativity on Twitter/the internet.

I'll be using two things to gauge how the film was received:
    1. The RT audience score. Which is still quite good at the moment.
    2. The box office numbers over the next few weeks.

    Anything else is just babble.

It's a more toxic and divided fan base than ever, it's exponentially worse than after Episode I and TFN was a dumpster fire after that film released.

But back then, however you might have reacted to Jar Jar and the "inside your cells, yes" Phantom Menace, at least we tried to debate with some civility and even a little love.

Now it's just my ego versus yours and we've even weaponized the "like button".

    I blame Mike Zeroh. :)

It's just not that fun to be a Star Wars fan anymore, even the barista today was lecturing me about how I am "not a real fan" simply because I didn't like Episode 9.

Such a hurtful statement too, Star Wars has been part of my connection to family, alleviated personal crisis and even augmented my professional career when I worked briefly for the brand. It's a love I passed onto my children, a love that is likely to continue in my family for generations now, like an heirloom.

You know folks, we all get to react to art the way we choose. It's not an objective reaction, if it was, it would not be art.

And it is art, not life and death, not an encyclopedia or collection of trivia, nor is it a race to collect the most plastic stuff that will wind up in a landfill when you die.

I wish we could ALL remember that sometimes, myself included.

At least they are taking a break from RJ for a second. IGN comment section hasn't moved on from TLJ yet. The site not having an article to talk about the spoilers don't help..lol

There was enough fan service in this one to really take the wind out of the sails of any real sustained backlash. I think people will still hate parts of this movie (or the whole thing) and to be fair there are things to very strongly dislike. But they deliberately make efforts to appeal to the fans in such a way that the unified front the formed for TLJ will not be able stand like it did for TRoS. TLJ put a lot of disgruntled fans under one banner who had different issues with the movie. I think JJ averted that possibility with this film. He'll get more sustained flack from film critics than the fans I project.

In my opinion, JJ saved both Star Trek and Star Wars, Star Trek more so. Even though, you may not like what he did with either franchise, he did what he could considering that he didn't want to direct a Star Wars film in the first place, Spielberg talked him into it at the behest of KK.

Instead of film studios acquiring IPs to make money they should make films when there is a story to tell, but that's not how the world works.

Some people get tired of black people complaining, making a latin person a drug dealer is one good example of what African Americans complain about.

I think someone heard our complaints that Finn should have been a Jedi, at least he is now FS and didn't get killed off at the beginning of the ST.

Ironically Poe got killed off at the beginning of TFA and Isaac asked JJ to keep him on and he agreed.

I created a thread long ago, about who is really a fan, because of all the hate of TLJ, AOTC, and TPM. After much debate, anyone can be fan for whatever reason.

For me, I would not waste my money or time on something I hate. Its not my place to tell anyone how to live their lives.

I love Star Wars, and its disheartening to come to a place where some fans are filled with vitriol and hate.

I don't even go on my Twitter, Facebook and Instagram account anymore as I realized that social media is probably the biggest waste of time where 90% is just useless information that nobody cares. It's really a great tool for breaking news, or keeping in touch with friends/family across the country, but nobody uses it for that reason. The worst thing on Social Media is one someone posts that they are not seeing a specific movie that is coming out because they don't care anymore, as I always want to answer, "So you took the time to tell us something you don't care about? Apparently you do!" LOL We will look back at social media 20 years from now and laugh at the 1,000's of useless posts that people made (especially Millenials). Our kids will be laughing the same way we laugh at our parents when we say, "You had to get up and change the channel on the TV everytime you wanted to watch something different?"

I'm convinced that Twitter needs to be done away with. After reading some of those comments, I'm legitimately concerned about some members of a certain fanbase. If you can't sleep, can't eat and need to speak to a therapist because your fictional ship didn't work out, you've got bigger problems than TROS's storyline direction.

I still haven’t even launched my Twitter app or visited the site since seeing TRoS! Was avoiding it to avoid spoilers, and now I guess I’m just not in a hurry to read the usual nonsense. Maybe I’ll have a look in a week or so. That’s how much it matters to me. *shrug*.

I guess it would help if you could filter any tweet that used certain words, like “garbage”/“dumpster fire” “ruin” “betrayal”, those kind of terms. I don’t mind reading the kind of well-reasoned and proportionate criticism one is more likely to find amongst the fine folks on this here forum ;), but the hyperbolic yet empty negativity that prevails so often on social media gets so tedious for me.

At least empty hyperbolic praise has a positive energy to it - it’s a meaningless smile. And that is so much nicer to see than a meaningless scowl, I think.

Some of the reylos were very invested not just in a "fictional ship", but in a beautiful story they thought was being told. No doubt I'm a reylo, too, and I'm just disappointed that the two of them didn't get to keep the happiness they found in each other.

Art is to enrich your life and I can't be too critical of those having a bad reaction right now, honestly. Clearly some are taking it too far, but the general disappointment? Valid.
