Though, as an actor myself, it is also important in one's career to be discerning in what roles you accept.

The only way IMO is if he sacrifices himself to save someone whether that be his mother, Luke, Rey, etc.

I sure hope you're right! I don't buy the Kylo redemption expectation. It would be too obvious (masked Skywalker dark sider's redemption as a or the main turning point).

Also, I really like Adam Driver as an actor, but he shines as a troubled, creepy bad guy. I don't think I could buy him as a good guy.

I think the best play would be to redeem Luke from his failings. Raising Rey to the next generation of good. Kylo can't be saved by Luke and usurps Snoke. Takes over as the big baddie like Vader never was...

Then in about 10 years....The Sequel Sequel Trilogy is the redemption of Ben Solo

It would set up an interesting scenario for a future trilogy/the EU where a redeemed Ben Solo goes into exile after IX, attempting to deal with his personal demons as he tries to find his faith in the Force. There is a lot of story potential there.

That's dark. I am not sure that I would want that but it could be done well but that puts yet even more pressure on compelling back story.

While an intriguing twist, would it be possible given Han and Leia's dialogue in Episode 7 and virtually all of Luke's character development in the OT? If Luke wouldn't kill his father who was a Sith, why would he kill Jedi? And wasn't Kylo's also referred to as the Jedi Killer? This would be an extremely hard sale to make (for me at least).

Yeah there is a lot working against the idea. The more you think about. And yes it is a very hard sell. Even done exceptionally well many fans would never stand for it.

It just goes against too much established canon. As is the case with everything else, we are left to speculate on what makes this movie dark. Merely saying the Jedi must end is probably not it, because smart money is on a new type of Jedi Order replacing the old one. Has anyone asked Adam Driver if he shows up in Episode 9? Is he in the process of being redeemed and Rey kills him (to avenge Han)? Would that constitute darkness? Who knows

correct.. it would put a permanent lump in a lot of fan's throats.

but... we all have to remember that ROTJ was not the end of this saga. 30 yrs on, and things are not good.. and Luke Skywalker is not among the current heroes of the republic/resistance. The guy is now a myth (that was from a survey of 1 person... Rey, so i wont state that as fact lol)

whilst i hope and think that Luke will have had a great reason for what he has been up to, and that he will rise once again to help defeat the bad guys... we have to keep our minds open to other outcomes.

well that's just it... hearing that this movie will be dark.. weird etc has led us down some incredible paths in terms of guessing where the saga is going.

I think dark could simply be.. Luke starts in a bad place. Rey goes through a particularly dark 'dagobah cave' type ordeal. Kylo endures a tortuous end to his training from Snoke.

Ben dying in 8.. meaning no Solo's in ep 9? jeez i'm not sure about that. too dark... surely?

Driver's film career thus far has spanned a wide gamut of characters.
he does play creepy bad very well. he also plays sweet, forbearing victim very well.
the combination may be what attracted Kennedy to his range in the first place.

    ~ * ~

while i still think there may be a surprise waiting for us where concerns Luke's other students, i don't think anything very very complicated is going on here. everyone is expecting some huge earth-shattering twist, but that seems gimicky at this point. the story is more likely going to unfold in a far more predictable (and redemptive) fashion--it's going to be our emotions that take a steep and exhilarating turn; not the story necessarily.

and the darkness referred to, as @Maximus said, is likely just in terms of where they are generally in the narrative; suffering trials.
if you go into a tunnel that's long enough or bends, there's that point when you can no longer see the entrance behind you or the exit ahead.
that's what the middle of a trilogy should be.

    abso-tiva-lutely !

to put in simple terms that folk like... erm.. well me understand is that Driver is capable of playing a character we love AND hate during this trilogy and beyond. (honestly @FN-3263827... gamut? are you just making up words to confuse me :p)

he is super.. super talented imo.

it's okay, technically wide and gamut are redundant in this instance, so i totally botched it anyway ~ hahahaha

    There are four possibilities:

    1) Redemption and death.
    2) No redemption and death.
    3) No redemption and escapes.
    4) Redemption and life.

1 has been done already. 1 and 2 also have the problem that they make Han and Leia's storylines across the franchise bleak and tragic, which goes against the optimistic tone Star Wars was intended to have. Rey as a Solo could have resolved this, but that looks incredibly unlikely at this point. The only other way for Kylo to die and not completely wreck Han and Leia's story is if he has a child by the end of the trilogy.

3 is possible, but would leave the ST effectively incomplete and would undermine some of the themes set up in TFA.

4 is perhaps the least problematic thematically, but is perhaps the most challenging to achieve convincingly. Living means he still has to accept responsibility for his crimes and leaves the question of what kind of life he could possibly live when an entire galaxy wants his head.

Whatever they choose, it's highly likely going to be divisive.

The PT resolved in both tragedy and no redemption.

    Partial redemption
5- Prevents even greater tragedy but has his own not know or light side agenda. Will return in the future.

The PT could get away with because we already had the rest of the saga and knew the rest of the story.

True but they might also not end the saga at 9.

Yeah but with the prequels we already knew that eventaully Vader would get redeemed, so it could end super bleak in ROTS.

I also think an alternative to 'no redemption and escapes' is 'no redemption and rules the galaxy' the way palpatine and Vader wanted to. so that we have a fully functioning dark side user at the height of their powers for the sequel sequel trilogy. However this would require Rey & Finn to effectively lose in some way, and I just don't think Disney are that brave to show the light side losing.

Whats more is Kylo Ren doesn't actually seem to want to rule the galaxy, just wipe out the jedi. so I think his destiny is more along the spiritual path, rather than the persuit of power. I can see him losing at the end of this trilogy and going into hiding, ala Ben Kenobi at the end of ROTS/beginning of ANH. with the sequel sequel trilogy being about Rey/Finn trying to track him down.

But really, that would just extend the characters arc. either he gets redeemed eventually or not. and based on the fact he is han and leia's only child (as far as we know) and the only new generation skywalker descendent (that we know) it seems like he needs redeeming in order for the saga to make sense. surely if you focus on a family for the duration of 9 films, its got to end happily rather than in tragedy for them.
