New Rules, I will edit and add everyone's suggestions and also track votes on all....

Well I know there are a lot of war movie fanatics on here (like me)....I was discussing this topic in another thread so decided to open a separate one on this - what are your favorite battle scenes ever captured in film or miniseries?

Here is a list of mine to start with, added everyone else so far- I have asterisked my Top 3. Total votes so far in [ ] thru post #9

[1]- Apocalypse Now - "I love the smell of napalm in the morning"
[1]-- Hacksaw Ridge - I haven't seen this but have heard it is awesome
[1]-- We Were Soldiers - One of Mel Gibson's best roles
    [1]-- Kingdom of Heaven
[1]-- Kelly's Heroes - Classic WWII with Sherman tanks
[1]-- Revenge of the Sith - Opening battle of Coruscant
[1]-- The Two Towers - Helm's Deep - 1 paragraph from Tolkien turned into an epic battle by PJ
[1]-- A Bridge Too Far - Sean Connery and awesome airborne scenes
    - Gettysburg - Little Round Top (incredible leadership by Joshua Chamberlain)
[1]-- *Saving Private Ryan - Omaha Beach (WWII vets that were there had to leave the theater it was so realistic)
    - Return of the King - Ride of the Rohirrim at the Pelennor Fields (PJ got this scene right!!)
[2] - *Glory - Assault on Ft Wagner (Probably THE finest movie battle scene of all!)
    - The Patriot - Final Battle (a conglomeration of Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse, still well done)
    - Fury - Final Battle (one M-4 Sherman holds the crossroads...)
[2]- Rogue One - Battle of Scarif (holds its own against traditional war movie scenes)
[1]- *A New Hope - Death Star Assault (George Lucas' finest - I have watched at least 500 times on youtube)
    - 300 - Initial assault by the Persians (grossly inaccurate but the fighting is amazing)
    - Bahubali - If you have never seen this - WOW....that is all I can say, epic, incredible!
    - Gladiator - Opening battle vs the Germanic tribes - Roman legion at its finest
    - Empire Strikes Back - Battle of Hoth - Lucas' throwback to WWI trenches - our first look ever at AT-ATs!!
    - Band of Brothers - Carentan and assault on the German artillery - incredibly well done and accurate
    - The Pacific - Peleliu and Iwo Jima - Powerful, scary, accurate and realistic - John Basilone at Iwo was a true life Superhero
    - Starship Troopers - Whiskey Outpost - one of the finest ground sci-fi alien assaults ever
    - Edge of Tomorrow - Beach invasion - D-Day vs Aliens
    - The Battle of Britain - Until the movie Dunkirk, the finest WWII aerial combat ever filmed
    - Dunkirk - Spitfire scenes - Nolan got this just perfectly right - the camera angles of the Spitfires are just breathtaking - the sound in the cockpit 100% accurate (actual sounds from Spitfire cockpits) - LOVE THIS!

I find the lack of any mention of the Battle of Helm's Deep... disturbing.

Also, A Bridge Too Far has some excellent battle sequences, but is honestly just one of the greatest WW2 movies ever made period.

    Example:

    great thread @Lock_S_Foils :)

to throw in a couple that haven't been mentioned.. 'We Were Soldiers' (don't hate me, but i love it lol) and Hacksaw Ridge. If you haven't seen Hacksaw Ridge... i highly recommend it (its fraggin awesome!)

as for my favorite, it would be all too easy for me to go with my namesake and go with Gladiator.. but i will go for another not mentioned:-
    Kingdom of Heaven.

it's a beautifully made film, and whilst i'm sure the battle scenes are nothing close to what they were actually like... they are powerful none the less.

not a lot to it.. but one of my favorite scenes from any movie:-

I don't know what my most favorite battle scene is but here a some I really like:

    1) Return Of The Jedi: The Battle of Endor (space)
    2) Apocalypse Now: Beach Assault
    3) LOTR: Return Of The King - Ride of the Rohirrim

But what defines a battle? IMO a duel can also be a battle. The greates duel would be the Mexican standoff in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

like @NinjaRen, i'm having a hard time delineating the criteria for this.

absolutely agree with the assault on Fort Wagner in Glory, though.

    Screen Shot 2018-02-08 at 7.02.07 AM.png

from Star Wars, I love the final space battle in Rogue One (i could watch star destroyers crash all day long).

    Screen Shot 2018-02-08 at 7.01.01 AM.png

have to think some more about it with regards to others.

Not everyone will agree I'm sure, but I think the opening space battle from ROTS was amongst the best sequences in the entire PT.

I'm not big on war movies, but I do love the tank battle between Donald Sutherland's paintball firing M4 Sherman and the Tiger* tank in the final act of Kelly's Heroes

*yeah, I know it wasn't a real Tiger, just a set dressed Russian thing.

OK OK Helm's Deep was epic....agreed....but did you know it was like 1 paragraph in the book?

I was discussing epic battles with my son @Bloo Leeder , he is a big fan of the LOTR movie battles. I told him there was a battle at the end of the 2nd Age that made Pelennor Fields look like a minor skirmish. The Last Alliance of Elves and Numenorean Men, ~250,000 strong including Elrond, Gil-Galad (Elven King wielding Aiglos, a mighty war spear) and Elendil (King of Gondor, Numenorean, wielding Narsil, the mightiest sword in Middle Earth) vs approx 3-400,000 orcs led by non other than Sauron himself, in the Battle of Dagorlad. Peter Jackson gave us a short glimpse of this battle in the flashback at the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring.

In Star Wars it is so hard to beat the classic

    Battle of Hoth

    (wampa)(obi-wan ghost).....(a-wing).... (at-at)..(at-at)....(at-at)...(at-at).....(at-st)...(at-at)......(at-at) .....(a-wing)......

    or the classic

    Battle of Endor

    (c-3po)(r2-d2 2)(ewok)(han) (ewok)(leia) (ewok)(luke) (ewok) ___-_------_(at-st)__-_--(at-st)_/\--_-_ (at-st)-_-_-__-_

    (falcon) (lando)(ackbar)(x-wing)(tie)(star destroyer)(x-wing 2)(tie)(star destroyer) (guard) (emperor)(guard) (luke)(blue)(red)(vader)(vader 2)(epic fail)

and I would also suggest, as another classic, the....

    Battle of Naboo

(amidala) (fighter) (fighter) (pod) (fighter) (fighter) (droideka)__(droideka)(red)(vicious)(red)(obi-wan 2)

Wow! Emoji battle! I am trying to figure out if 5 AT-ATs, 2 snowspeeders are better than 4 Naboo starfighters and two battle droids......

Here are a few off the top of my head

Hacksaw Ridge - Opening scene. It cannot be compared to Saving Private Ryan. Neither one is better than the other. But this scene in Hacksaw Ridge is so damn intense.

Fury - The tank scene near the end. Another intense and good scene of brotherhood coming together for each other

Enemy at the Gates - I can't pick just one scene. This movie is awesome

Saving Private Ryan - In a building where a german soldier and an american soldier roll around with a knife after a gun battle. They even roll over a dying soldier while another soldier cowers in the corner. So uncomfortable and intense. Then the german soldier walks past and lets the other one live.

The Revenant - Opening battle is like poetry

    LOTR - Helms Deep

Black Hawk Down - This movie has lots but the street battle is as good as it gets.

Cold Mountain - I really didn't like this movie much, but that opening battle was something to behold. Too bad the rest of the movie wasn't as good.

    ROTJ - Battle of Endor

This is the Letters from Iwo Jima and Flag of Our Father combo battle scene I was talking about. I did not make the video. I'm just linking it.

edit: Okay, it's Rated R due to Violence and depiction of bad stuff. Not for Children.

@Darth_Mu Wow....so powerful...thanks for sharing. Had never seen this combo done. My sons kept asking about John Basilone "Is he for real? Did he do that?" - YES he did, just an incredible effort....he is a true Superhero...

I don't know about you guys, but I liked the battle of endor in space and on the ground with those dangerous teddy bears.

Non star wars related, but I also liked the mad max fury road battle in the beginning when it was warboys vs buzzards

    GOT has two,

Battle of the bastards and the Widlings attack on the Wall.

One that is one of the most epic but rarely mentioned is the attack on Paris from Vikings.
