Who do you think has the best death scene in the OT? I guess only 4 main characters die (am I missing anyone?), but we have incidental deaths in Vader's wake as well as some more minor characters in battles. Who has the best death? Or, alternately, who were you happiest to see go? :)

I just had a conversation with my son, who said he was glad when Yoda died. "Why?" I asked, kind of confused. "Because he looks like he'd be funny, but then he gets boring." o.O So, I guess I need to work on that. (yoda ghost)

Thought I would ask if other people had a particular favorite.

I say Vader. His death is poignant and represents a completion of a journey, in a way that is both successful and a failure.

though Obi-Wan's death is always a powerful scene for me, nothing tops Vader and Luke in Vader's final moments.

    Vader!

That scene, when Anakin is redeemed by the love of his son and gets to see him with his own eyes, and we are able to see him in his final moments without the mask, while a slower variation of The Imperial March is playing in the background adding more sad notes to the scene, if possible.

"You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister... You were right."

And then we get to see the last breath of the very same young slave boy who was the only human to win the Boonta Eve Classic, the same Jedi knight we saw before and after The Clone Wars. Obviously this scene would have been amazing to have both his twins in his last moments, but then we possibly would not have the current conflict we have in the ST lol.

That Wilhelm scream Stormtrooper during ANH as he falls into the bottomless void of the Death Star

    That was pretty great

Or Captain Needa in TESB getting force choked to death, because the line "apology accepted, Captain Needa" is a great Vader quote.

That scene always impressed me. Captain Needa knew it was coming, accepted his fate, and took it with dignity. The Emperor to me has a great death. Nuts to that dude and the fact that Vader killed him to protect Luke. And gotta add this....Jabba The Hutt, out like a punk.

Obi-Wan giving that little smirk right before sacrificing himself makes it my favorite (even though you hate to see obiwan die). It really illustrates his faith in the force, knowing that he truly will be more powerful in death.

To not repeat Vader, I'll go with Tarkin. He was so sure of his victory, even not listening to the officer that told him the destruction of the Death Star was possible, that it makes the eniding of ANH even more satisfactory ;). I like to think he was never able to realize he was going to die, that the explosion was so fast that he died thinking he had won the war. Even if he was such a bad guy, he was a great one...

I like Qui-Gon Jinn's death because you never see it coming ... well except for when he breathes really heavy after fighting Darth Maul J for the first time ..

    Vader really ?

    I danced to his death.

The death of the ewok at the end of Rotj was more painful for me.

I wouldn't pick old Ben Kenobi's mainly because it never carried any real weight for me. When you stop and think about it, Obi-Wan doesn't actually have much screentime. Is his death emotional? Yes... ...but is it as emotional as some claim? No, most of the added weight comes from the fact that we got three extra films and a TV show to explore him in :).

i was really young when i saw ANH in the theatre (about 6), so it hit me hard; because i was attached to Obi-Wan as a fatherly guide, but maybe even more because of Luke's reaction, the swell of the music, all that.

and probably i didn't want to see Darth Vader actually do something that bad. up until then he had been scary, but he hadn't killed anybody.
and even at that age, i didn't want to see the last two Jedi wipe each other off the map. that was sad as all get out to me.

which also, perhaps gave more weight to Darth Vader's death, ultimately.
there was Luke to carry on, but Vader was the last real, actual Jedi of old.
