Now that we've all had time to let The Rise of Skywalker really sink in, what is the best Star Wars movie? For this poll though, I'm only counting the 1-9 movies, not Solo, Rogue One or The Clone Wars, etc.

I voted ESB, ROTJ, and TLJ. ESB and TLJ aren't necessarily my favorites per se (although I do love them), but they, along with ROTJ, did the most for the franchise IMO.

    In no order:
    ANH
    ESB
    TLJ

The three that display the best technical work on a film in the Star Wars world.
From story, acting, framing, shot selection, writing, pacing, set design etc...everything about these three are tops of the bunch.
Others have good or great moments in them but not across as many categories as these.

Of course people are going to have their favorites, but I think that, from a cinematic point of view, TLJ, ESB, and ROTS are by far the leaders in the SW saga.

I’ll go with Revenge of the Sith. However it often changes for me personally. I like them all. Some more than others but I do like them all.

ANH and TFA. The first because of the whole idea and the guts to start a thing like this. The other because of the years of anticipation before it finally hit the theaters and because it was the first Star Wars movie I could watch together with my son :)

(my 3rd choice was TLJ, because I had a surrealistic experience to be the only person in the room during its premiere in a tiny local theater :D)

For me, it's A New Hope. Prepare for a short essay.

To begin, just think about the beats of this film. Name a single scene, a single moment, that isn't an absolute classic. Every single beat is iconic: the opening crawl, the Star Destroyer coming over the camera, the droids dodging blaster fire, Leia giving the plans to Artoo, Vader entering the ship, Vader choking the rebel soldier, the droids wandering through the desert. The list goes on--each of these moments is absolutely iconic to Star Wars and each one can be encapsulated in a single image that takes you right back into that world. Empire is full of great moments, too, but not every single one is iconic. But every single beat of New Hope is iconic.

Further, it’s technically excellent. I don’t think it’s a fluke that A New Hope (then simply “Star Wars”) was up for best picture. The world of the film still holds up, even without CGI. In a move bolder than any other Star Wars film, we spend the first 15ish minutes following non-human characters. Not to mention the sheer momumental task of creating the Star Wars aesthetic from scratch.

Now, where people start to compare it negatively to Empire is on the level of character, plot an dialogue. The characters of A New Hope are relatively simple and the story is mostly plot-driven, more concerned with moving things along than exploring theme or character. Many would say that Empire improves on these things. After our, the usual criteria for “great films” usually involves deep character psychologies, character-driven plots (or non-plots) and deeply explored themes. And, if that’s really the only criteria for greatness in film, I would agree that Empire is the better story.

But I argue that, on some level, the simplicity of A New Hope is what makes it the best Star Wars movie.

Star Wars isn’t Shakespeare, relying on good writing and deeply-explored characters. Star Wars is the Brothers Grimm. It’s Ovid. It’s fairytale and myth.

Not to mention, this alone of all the Star Wars films had to create an aesthetic from scratch, combining everything from Westerns to WWII films to Flash Gordon to create something that doesn’t feel like a mashup of those things, but like something entirely new. No other Star Wars film had to do that. All the other films could just try to feel “like Star Wars.” A New Hope had to invent the recipe, and every other movie improvs on it.

    I completely agree!

In all honesty, I would have been perfectly happy with Star Wars stopping at ANH.
It's the only Star Wars that does what Lucas' original ambition was - bring back the romp!

After ANH, things switched to focus more on telling a character narrative, but in ANH there is this bright shining moment in film history where the romp broke through and reigned king for a day.

And the romp has never been as good before or since it!

The old Zorro series was one of the previous kings of romp, and of course the old Republic Serials, but ANH just blew them all away!
It took everything that convention said doesn't work and said, "Hold my beer", and showed how the plot driven story of a romp absolutely does work when you structure the narrative to support a visual story that communicates its narrative arcs through theatrical spectacles that intelligently understand how we connect visually to characters, and how we read action to see.

There's a logic writers sometimes point to for what makes a good story:
Their THOUGHTS become WORDS which become ACTIONS that define their CHARACTER that unfolds their DESTINY.

The wonderful thing about ANH is that it is the best show of how the romp flips that entirely upside down.
They are DESTINED to be of a CHARACTER which ACTS to SPEAK so to cause you to THINK.

And I think that...is simply amazing.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

I agree but for emotions I chose Return of the Jedi for obvious reasons of Vader and Luke, but my favourite is revenge of the Sith because it’s the movie I always wanted and it is my childhood favourite! And am so excited for the kenobi series as it’s going to pretty much be an add on to revenge of the Sith !!

    I'm not.
People love dark narratives where everybody suffers and things suck for the heroes to a maximum degree.

It's literally why they say, "the second act is king of story".

That A New Hope does so well in the midst of the "sucker for tragedy" trope of audiences is the actual shocking accomplishment.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

You ought not to be. Except among poll manipulating trolls and the YouTube hate-mongering brigade, TLJ was very well received by general audiences, critics, industry people, and fans.
