As we reflect on 2017, what are the best movies that you've seen in theaters?

I went to go see a lot of the popular movies but not all of them. There are still a few that got released last month that I hope to get to see.

    Here's my list:
    Star Wars: Last Jedi
    Thor: Ragnarok
    Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
    Spiderman: Homecoming
    Guardians of the Galaxy V.2
    Beauty and the Beast
    Wonder Woman

Moves of 2017 I still want to see:
    Wonder
    Greatest Showman
    Downsizing

For various reasons 2017 has seen my lowest number of cinema visits in some years, but for what it's worth (and in no particular order) my highlights were:

    Get Out
    Hidden Figures
    Logan
    Spider-Man: Homecoming
    Bladerunner 2049
    Thor: Ragnarok
    The Big Sick
    Star Wars: The Last Jedi

As above, I've not seen Wonder or War for the Planet of the Apes yet, so will reserve judgement on them - but I also found a bunch of movies in 2017 that friends, family and plenty of other folk loved, but did nothing for me, like Baby Driver, GotG2, Kong: Skull Island, Valerian and The Lego Batman Movie. Can't please everyone all of the time though!

Unfortunate. It's brilliant. If you like Guillermo Del Toro, you will love this.
    I'd highly recommend it.

Haven't seen everything I would like to this year, but my top 5 would be:

    5. The Lego Batman Movie
    4. Baby Driver
    3. Thor: Ragnarok
    2. Blade Runner 2049
    1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Still want to see Logan (which I own on blu-ray), and Dunkirk. I also loved Wonder Woman, IT, Spider Man Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, John Wick 2 and Beauty and the Beast.

    I'd say

    1. Dunkirk
    2. The Last Jedi
    3. The Disaster Artist
    4. Wonder Woman
    5. GetOut

    Edit:

Worst movies would be (from what I saw:
    1. The Dark Tower
    2. Fifty Shades (the second one, whatever it was)
    3. Bright
    4. Assassins Creed (technically 2016, but I saw it late)
    5. Mother!

I never watched Dark Tower because I like Stephen King, Idris Elba and McConaughey too much to subject myself to it.
Never saw Fifty Shades because I was single most of 2017.
Never saw Bright because Blast Max Landis.
    This movie was indeed trash.
Blast this movie. And double Blast people who try to say "you just didn't get it"

Yeah, I love The Dark Tower series, and thought maybe (just maybe!) I could enjoy the film in another, separate way. Nope, it was absolute garbage.

Mother!, too, was awful. I had a friend who tried the "you didn't get it" stick. I asked what it was about then, and she said "See, the mother is a phoenix."
I asked if she picked up on any of the biblical or mother earth allusions, and she had no idea what I was talking about. Clearly, at least one of us "didn't get it".

But yeah, the movie was just a thinly veiled allusion after thinly veiled allusion, nothing with any actually meaningful substance. The one thing that I had to look up was the meaning of the powder J-Law kept putting in her drink- apparently, according to Aronofsky, it was a reference to the short story The Yellow Wallpaper. Let alone the fact that J-Law was apparently playing Earth/Mother Earth/Mary Magedlene/ Mary/ Femininity, but that too? These are metaphors for the sake of metaphors. Mother! was a mess of a movie- overly and unnecessarily complicated in some parts, and stupidly hamfisted in the rest- and one whose apparently complex message was "take care of the earth". Yeah, really breaking new ground there. :p

mother! was Aronofsky cashing every check he had from making hits in the past to get away with a self important, self masturbatory blast fest of a film that under no normal circumstances should have been green lit outside of independent funding.

This was Aronofsky playing around with how brilliant Aronofsky is. And he's a great film maker. But this is the kind of self indulgent mess that is so heavy handed and brutally blatant while trying to be deep and meaningful that keeps a lot of people from checking out the "artful" films because they see this and just say "yep. this is what I expected." and go back to big releases only.

I mean 30 minutes in and you get it. She's mother earth, he's the creator and every other character is a blatant biblical reference from here out to beat you over the head with for ANOTHER HOUR AND A HALF

My ten picks (in no particular order): The Last Jedi, Call Me By Your Name, Spoor, The Square, Coco, Blade Runner 2049, The Florida Project, Brigsby Bear, Wind River and The Salesman. And a special mention for my guilty pleasure of the year: Geostorm.

Here are the 2017 movies I've seen so far. Rankings up for revision based on new movies watched (I intend to see Mudbound in short order, for one, and I need to find a place to watch Coco soon.).

    Films of 2017
    1. Blade Runner 2049- 9
    2. The Shape of Water- 9
    3. Wonder Woman- 8.5
    4. War for the Planet of the Apes- 8.5
    5. Molly’s Game- 8.5
    6. Dunkirk- 7.5
    7. The Post- 7.5
    8. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri- 7
    9. Darkest Hour- 7
    10. The Man from Earth: Holocene- 6.5
    11. Wonder Wheel- 6

Movies seen in theaters: Blade Runner 2049, Wonder Woman, Dunkirk, The Man from Earth: Holocene. All others were watched at home (I have access to screeners).

I really loved 2049. Close to but not quite as good as the original (which is in my top 40). Gosling is one of my favorite younger actors and he does a great job here. Ford gives one of his best performances in years. Luv is a great heavy, monstrous and terrifying. The real star here, though, is the world. Just like in the first film, the world of Blade Runner leaves a distinct and powerful impression, tantalizing yet terrible. I was captivated with that first shot, looking down on the ruins of California. The sights and sounds of Blade Runner are simply astonishing and coupled with the great acting from a strong cast and a great story make for an enthralling experience.

Other special mention goes to Molly's Game for Sorkin's directorial debut and more great performances by Chastain and Elba, who continue to be wonderful. The Post also has one of Hanks' best performances in years, and Meryl is Meryl. The score from Three Billboards is brilliant (Carter Burwell is a great talent), and so is Dunkirk's to a slightly lesser extent. WW is great both for the wonderful imagining of the character and for one of the best WWI sequences I've seen in awhile; that second act is inspired, even if I saw the Thewlis thing a mile away. War is a great closing to Caesar's arc and is arguably the strongest out of an altogether decent trilogy.

Del Toro is Del Toro. 'Nuff said.

Ratings are 80% personal enjoyment and 20% assessment of quality (or something along those lines). A five is the prototypical "average" movie, though not necessarily the average rating (because I aim to see movies I'll love anyway). 2049 and The Shape of Water both cracked my top 100 with decent placings.

I haven't seen the 2017 MCU movies yet because I actually didn't start watching MCU things till this past summer and I'm still playing catch-up, watching everything in release order (I'm in AoS season 3 right now, heading towards Civil War). I expect to enjoy myself with all of them.

I have no intention of watching the sequel trilogy anytime soon. Maybe they're good movies, I don't know; I'd probably enjoy Rogue One. I just have no motivation. Still feel burned about the whole Legends thing. Whatever. That's my loss or not. Will probably watch them eventually but who knows when.

Aside from that I want to catch as many of the Oscar nominees before the show as possible, so I've got a lot to cover in the next few weeks if I have the chance.:)
