A recent thread on Reddit surfaced from someone claiming to have attended a Disney marketing conference that revealed some new information on their major projects (which is not unheard of). Surprisingly, some of its key details about Star Wars Episode IX - as it was described at this event - have been verified elsewhere, so we feel confident enough to share this set of rumors here.

Plot details on Episode IX were predictably light, but from the sound of things, the scale of this movie is going to be absolutely massive. Inside are some details about Kylo Ren's appearance and Rey's weapon of choice, along with much more. Potential spoilers ahead!

The Reddit thread, posted by the user Xyzsvtabc, begins with a disclaimer about how the user came across the information. He explains it in the following way:

There's a lot to the post itself, but I want to just focus on the Episode IX-related material for this article. (We'll be sure to cover the other claims later on in a separate piece.) In his initial post, he clarifies the year that Episode IX takes place in, along with a quick discussion of two repaired objects that Rey and Kylo Ren make use of, another droid buddy, and the promise that we'll be seeing lots of planets:

So that's a lot to go through. First and foremost, the time-skip between The Last Jedi and Episode IX is roughly the same as The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, so it seems like the entirety of the conflict between the Resistance and the First Order is going to remain in a relatively short timespan - fitting, considering that both sides have fewer resources than the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. While Kylo Ren will no doubt take his mask off again for multiple scenes in the movie, it stands to reason that he'd want to reconstruct it (in a process that seems similar to kintsugi) to appear more intimidating as a military leader. (Snoke left big shoes to fill, after all.) When pressed for details about what the red lines looked like, Xyzsvtabc noted that he couldn't quite tell if the markings resembled crystals or a glowing substance.

What's more confusing is the idea that we'll skip seeing Rey repair the Skywalker Lightsaber, which we recently heard would be her weapon of choice. Her last scene in The Last Jedi implied that she was going to fix yet another broken thing in her life (as that's something that she's got a knack for), and it seems like that might be something that they'd want to at least mention even if it happened offscreen. It may be that all the media that will be made for the lead-up to the launch of Episode IX will feature explanations for less-important story elements like this one, as Rey having fixed her lightsaber before the events of the movie would give storytellers working in this era more freedom in covering events set between the last two films of the trilogy.

The droid is of particular interest here, as it, along with Kylo Ren's mask design, are things that the people at Making Star Wars recently verified as being accurate to what they know. While Xyzsvtabc referred to the droid as 'Dio', MSW has seen it spelled 'D. O.', but pronounced the same way that Xyzsvtabc wrote it. They compared the character to the fable of the Ugly Duckling, and mentioned that its story arc involves looking up to BB-8 as a parental figure. (Droid life, uh, finds a way! In any case, 'D. O.' has nothing in common with Iden Versio's 'Dio' droid from Battlefront II.) Meanwhile, they described Kylo Ren's repaired mask as having 'a very corrupted look' that's evocative of the appearances of Darth Vader and Darth Maul.

I also dig that it sounds like there's going to be a wide variety of planets visited in this movie. John Boyega most likely wasn't kidding when he said he saw this movie as being 'the war to end all wars' shortly before the release of The Last Jedi. I can only hope that we'll get to revisit some familiar locations decades after the events of the two prior trilogies alongside plenty of brand-new environments.

But this description isn't all. Looking through some of his other posts reveals other information of note. The cherry on top is the confirmation that the film will indeed see the Knights of Ren take part in the story of Episode IX after only being vaguely hinted at in both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi! When asked about the mysterious antagonists, this was his reply:

Finally! The Knights of Ren have been the subject of nonstop speculation for years, and it looks like we're finally going to get some answers about them one way or the other. J. J. Abrams was enthusiastic about these guys, and it seems only fitting that he's the director who will actually get to show them all off in action.

On another note, I should also mention that Xyzsvtabc has previously leaked accurate information from Disney events before. A few months ago, he mentioned that Nick Fury would have a prominent role in Spider-Man: Far From Home and that several Avengers in the fourth film in their series would wear white matching uniforms. Both of these things have been confirmed, officially in the case of Spider-Man and through a leak with Avengers 4 (read at your own risk, as there are other spoilers following that link). While his username doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, he's someone who's proved himself reliable in the past, and that's definitely a point in his favor.

All this stuff sounds incredibly exciting, and I can't wait until we can see it for ourselves. To think that Episode IX is only a year (and some change) away is mind-blowing. May the Force be with us all.

Really? Taking "sources" from Reddit now? Also, very convenient that he is doing this "from memory" just in case he is wrong.

Dont like the rebuilt Lightsaber and rebuilt mask ideas. If Kylo wants a new mask he should simply create a new one and we dont need to see that on screen. Rey needs a new Lightsaber that really is hers. One thing I have been just a bit annoyed with the new ST is reliance on old designs. I am hoping with EP9 the designs and Resistance ships will be much different. I want to see ships from all over the known galaxy joining the Resistance to defeat the FO.

The rebuilt mask doesn't make much sense. Kylo's philosophy is "let the past die." The helmet was an explicit homage to Vader. Unless he has a major philosophy shift, the mask is gone.

Unless JJ just brings the mask back because he introduced it and he likes it, which would be fine I guess, if it looks cool.

As for the lightsaber, the nerd in me really just wants something new. Even a green saber would feel fresher than the same old blue. Take an aesthetic chance.

The only reason I did this is because MSW verified some of his information and he's been absolutely right about some Marvel Studios stuff well ahead of the curve. If this were a typical "My uncle works at Nintendo" story, then I wouldn't have reported on it.

Key word here is some: you have to understand my skepticism here.

Not that I'm trying to butt in, but surely you've noticed that SWNN posts articles that are consistent with rumors that either we get ourselves, or can be rationalized with other rumors from other reputable sources (or the good old fashioned "here's our speculation" bit).

And unless I misunderstood his article, Pomojema is certainly not saying all of this is 100% fact. It's rumor; it's speculation. There's no need to leave snide remarks just because you don't have much confidence in the source.

Yes, but I always carry a healthy dose of skepticism; especially from Reddit "sources".

I know JJ and Rian were in touch and blah blah but I really think it has to be so difficult to conclude a saga you have started and the middle chapter has been written by another director with his own vision.
Can't wait to see what JJ has done. One think is sure, he will give us images to frame and keep in the memory.

...They said the reforge is not shown on screen.

Of course not - why show anything cool like that in ANY of the Star Wars movies. Lets' add a SideKick for BB-8 instead... Let's leave that time frame open for future Disney Show Cartoon shows! Let's completely whittle down R2 and 3-P0's characters to blink and you miss cameos! I'm kinda over the sequel trilogy. It's a shame - so much potential to push forward the mythology, and instead they passed the torch in the first teaser instead of the end of 9, where they should have. They should have had Luke vs Snoke. I really don't care about Rey v. Kylo. I mean Rey's going to win she has already... I love that Rey's the Jedi moving forward, just sucks that the sequel trilogy ended up being Star Wars' version of Star Trek: Generations...

I'm REALLY hoping at the very LEAST, JJ expands on what he setup in 7, that was completely ignored in 8. Hoping we see more ties to the Prequels and ANAKIN makes an appearance. Ultimately tho i'm pretty sure it'll be one big letdown. No more chances to expand on the Skywalker mythos, (on the big screen, anyway - but that's where it belongs...) alas we'll have "The Adventures of Broom Boy and Kitster's great great grandson" and a Live Action tv show about... a Bounty. Hunter....

    Ugh

Reading this source material, seeing everyone's replies, just makes me wish even more that 7-8-9 had NOTHING to do with previous SW characters, etc.

There is absolutely no way to tie a movie to that material without enraging various parts of "the fandom".

I'm both happy and sad I read the MSW article, but since the news is here too I guess I wouldn't have escaped it lol! Excited for the Knights of Ren and the mask. BUT THAT AVENGERS 4 LINK IS STAYING UNTOUCHED.

I think Disney and Lucasfilm were placed in a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. There probably would have been less "Not my Luke" sort of nonsense, but I think there would have been plenty of dissenters regardless.

Time will tell if these decisions hold up, or if they will echo in the bowels of history, being shadowed by the monolith that is the Original Trilogy.

On that cheery note... I'm looking forward to what's going to happen in IX, despite my grievances! Haha.

    true dat Stormy.

the wonderful irony of your statement is that over time.. the OT became that monolith. going back to 1982 ( a year before ROTJ released ) the general consensus was that ESB sucked, but everyone was looking forward to ROTJ. there was a period after ESB when the 'cool' side of the fence was to go along with friends and agree it was rubbish... not long after ROTJ and all of a sudden people were all saying ESB was a masterpiece and the 'cool' side of the fence was to say that ESB was the favorite of the 3.

people are too quick to judge and pick a side of the fence.

learning from the OT.. nothing anyone is saying right now means a damned thing. time will tell ;)

They want to sell toys. New mask, new droid (lol), and new saber (that I predict will just be a blue version of Kylo's, which is super disappointing).

They replaced R2 with BB8 to sell more toys.

I think folks give Disney, JJ, whoever too much credit. The story and characters are very secondary to revenue.

People in here are trying to come up with some in-story justification for Kylo fixing his mask. LOL

They just want to sell more masks and more Kylo toys.

Well, Rian changed a scar, destroyed Kylo's mask, broke a lightsaber, showed the chest of the dark side, made disappear Snap and company, killed Ackbar, Luke and Snoke, and changed the final of The Force awakens (didn't know, just read this in old news).

I think is legit and fair to rebuild a simple mask and a lightsaber. We will be fine people.
