RUMOR Billie Lourd's Character.

Her statement could also be interpreted as our characters(Luke, Leia, Han etc.) just don't know much about her character. You could even speculate that Billie Lourd doesn't know much about her own character.
There are so many meanings of "Lack of character." An impossible deciphering task we have been given.

 

I always thought it would be an interesting nod to have her play Leia's daughter, but only in a background. So we see Leia, we see her daughter in the background perhaps even refer to her as Jaina with a lightsaber on her belt and that would be all they show of her. This would throw a little bone to the EU folks who like the Jaina and Jason plot line without having to actually incorporate the whole story in the new canon.

Yeah - let's just assume she has some cameo type lady-in-waiting to Leia type role and maybe we'll get lucky and they tap her for a Young Leia whacking Lord Tion in a piece of Rogue One.

 

We all know she's lying about her role.

 

No - we don't. We may think she's lying. We may hope she's lying. We may hope she's NOT lying. We may hope she is on drugs so that she provides years and years of tabloid fodder.

But we don't ACTUALLY know anything.

There wasn't anything in the documentation that MSW saw. A skeleton of an outline, mind you, but far better than nothing.

I really hope she is being truthful (not that she has to be). Personally, I don't think she is going to be a major character, just a backgrounder or something. A step below Greg Grunberg perhaps? I think he'll at least be noticeable on-screen, with perhaps a speaking role or a line or two. I don't know if she will but you never know. Does, JJ usually "help out" the children of his actors?

 

Nothing good came from the lying about Khan situation. It totally made large numbers of fans turn on JJ. He is not going to go out and do the exact same thing on what appears to be a minor character. I think this is the main reason the information leak has been far more "fun" this time around. Like the hand drawn pictures, mechanical arm, and topps cards redo.

Second this is a not well established actress who is not going to risk her own credibility to lie to entertainment media. "Hi Billie this is JJ. Can you go on record lying to the people who will be interviewing you for the rest of your career." Seriously it is far more effective to not say then to tell a lie. They want social media buzz. A lie makes waves for a day or two. Mystery keeps things going.

 

Also, she could have simply said "no comment" re: her role in the film. Serkis, Gleeson and Driver haven't spoken publicly.

 

I'm willing to bet she is just a background character. Just a bone thrown to Carrie Fisher. So when we watch the DvD/Blueray we can pause it and say," see that fuzzy figure walking in the background behind the action, that's actually Carrie's daughter whats-her-name!" Just Carrie pulling a Kris Jenner, pimpin her kid, Lol...just kidding.
