The Vanity Fair article said it was before JJ jumped in.

I'm referring to the little video where George asked JJ about Darth Vader's grandchildren.

Good point! But I think if anything that clip showed that there is no animosity here. This new video clip can sound like George is bitter, but when you look at the bigger picture I think he was just being super honest about the fact that it kind of hurts to see someone else calling the Star Wars shots.

Wild guess of what Ardnt was doing all that time...
Research on mythology as inspiration for the ST. Extensive research. Perhaps he got lost in the library. ;)

I'm on board too, but it's the Kathleen Kennedy train. GL's selection of her as his successor harkens back to his genius during the OT, which was as a curator of talent. He built the sandbox, picked the right people and let them play -- it was the synthesis of this collective creative talent that made the OT great (a collaborative synthesis that was by all accounts missing from the PT -- it's like he forgot his strengths and what made the original effort turn out so compelling). Kennedy is doing the exact same thing, from her selection of the writers/directors to the story group to the droid-makers. There is literally no one on the entire planet better suited to carrying on and developing GL's legacy, and handpicking her to succeed him was his last stroke of genius.

Edit: For those who haven't read Rinzler's "Making of" books, his genius as a curator of talent is on full display. You really begin to understand how so many people other than GL were critical to SW as a next level vision. McQuarrie, Joe Johnson, the whole fx department, John Williams, Marcia Lucas (his wife, an Oscar-winning editor who also helped nurture a lot of the joy and humor into the story with her feedback throughout), etc. This was all possible because GL was great at bringing people together and facilitating creative ingenuity.

I watched some of the interview. I think he says the story is about the Skylwalker family, but the prequels didn't really stick to that. He had a chance in prequels to explore Anakin's story, his and Padme's story, which he ended up bogging down with politics and intrigue that wasn't interesting. The relationships weren't developed, the characters were flat, the dialogue stifling. If George had made 3 great movies, he'd have a case for himself. HE could of made the sequels, but he chose to make the prequels instead.

The entire SAGA 1-6 is about Anakin and his rise, fall and redemption.

Yep. I still think and come away with Obi-Wan being the main character and hero of the three films, when in fact it's not supposed to be that way.

But he is the first name I think of when you say "lead" or "hero"

It also had to do with Ewan McGregor being the bigger star and that sometimes justifies the hiearchy of certain characters.

    Nope.

If Hayden was a better actor, he would have stuck in my mind.

Ewan was also not given great lines, but the great actors make it work with what they are given.

Hayden isn't a bad actor, but he was a new actor with little to no direction in terms of legitimate line delivery, but Ewan pulled it off due to being a seasoned actor already at that time.

For what it's worth I thought George sounded calm, collected and careful.

Maybe when he say's "criticized" he just means criticism as a necessary process of people thinking and appreciating art. I'm sure any personal attacks/bashing is difficult but maybe his breakup analogy is just a smart analysis of handling people and institutions while minimizing damage.

Perhaps less "bitter" and more "reflective" and "resigned".

I'm always skeptical about official press releases. I'm sure some publicist just writes the article with some kind words and gets whoever supposedly said those quotes to sign off on them. :p
