After her  murderous droids derail Aphra’s attempt to auction of the Rur Crystal, an artifact that contains the consciousness of an ancient Jedi, by contacting Darth Vader – the Sith Lord has arrived and Aphra is once again on the run! Read on for the full review of Marvel’s Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #12. Spoilers ahead…

When the sadistic droid Triple-Zero reveals to Aphra that he contacted Vader, he tells her that he did not inform the Sith Lord that Aphra was alive, only that there was an gathering of ne’er-do-wells attempting to secure an ancient Jedi artifact. The droid has found a clever loophole in his programming to blackmail his master into setting him and his counterpart BeeTee free from servitude.

To make matters worse, Rur, who has possessed a droid body and is wreaking havoc on the station, is still on the loose. Regretfully, Aphra is faced with no other options but to alter the programming on her droids, hoping that they don’t decide to turn right around and kill her. After setting them free to murder at will, the droids thank Aphra by leaving her still breathing.

When Aphra reunites with her Wookiee partner, Black Krrsantan, the two make their way to a ship to make their escape. Before leaving, Aphra realizes that she can still be a hero, and rich, by securing the ship belonging to the now dead representatives of the Shadow University which contains priceless artifacts. As she asks Krrsantan to talk her out of going back, the Wookiee responds by taking off without her.

With her decision now made for her, she doubles back, only to be chased down by the lightsaber-wielding Rur-possessed droid. As Aphra tries to outrun the droid, Vader arrives and provides a much-needed distraction. As the Sith Lord and the ancient Jedi begin to fight, Aphra may finally have the window she needs.

As this storyline draws to its conclusion, writer Kieron Gillen ramps up the action along with the stakes, giving us a very fast-paced issue that didn’t allow much room to breathe, which is exactly what I wanted after the less action-packed issues that have built up to this point in the story. I’m very interested to see where he takes the droids as they are now liberated and on their own (this can’t be a good thing for the galaxy), as well as Krrsantan, who has left Aphra behind to fulfill his weird life debt obligations to the Xonti Brothers (see Doctor Aphra Annual #1).

Hopefully, Aphra gets away from Vader unnoticed, as his knowledge of her still being alive can only be a bad thing for her (seeing as how she had to fake her death just to avoid being killed by him the last time they met). Aphra is a loose end in Vader’s mind, and she has outlived her value to him. If she is captured, let’s hope she can come up with a really good reason on the fly for the dark Lord to keep her alive.

As always, Kev Walker’s dynamic and energetic art brings an exciting vibe to this issue, as well as an aesthetic that continues to complement this series in the best possible way. Whether you are a fan of Aphra or not, it’s hard to deny the synergy between Gillen and Walker on this series. This unique collaboration is what keeps me coming back to this series each issue with a level of excitement that rivals that for any other title currently in my comic book pull list.

A good action packed issue. A little bit all over the place but entertaining.

I'm interressed to see how this comic will evolve now the two murder droids and Black Krrsantan seem to have left Aphra, or will the reunite in a future issue? Part of me hopes so, I like the dynamics between Aphra and the droids

While I love this series, I admit that I am hating the cover art (I loved the annual #1 cover though). I just don't like the way Aphra is depicted by Shirahama. But, as is especially true in comics, don't judge a book by its cover as they say.

Yeah, it's a little... anime-y? Not that that's a bad thing necessarily, but I don't think it fits her character well.

I do wonder how long Aphra's story will go. I have a feeling she won't last to the battle of Endor, but I guess they could always have her fake her death and be this canon's Dash Rendar.

Yeah, I agree I don't like the anime style cover either.

It depends, if she is discoverd by Vader in the next issue I think she will meet her end at the hands of Vader sometime before Endor. If she's hidden, who knows? Another factor could be that writer Kieron Gillen is going to write the main SW comic. Don't know if he can/wants to write two ongoing SW series at the same time?

From what he said in a recent interview, it seems that he plans on continuing Aphra when he takes over on Star Wars, though he currently has no plans to have the two series cross over any time soon (which is good news in my opinion). But I think it's very possible that the Aphra series will come to an end eventually, much like his initial run on Vader. At that point, I wouldn't be surprised (if Gillen is still on SW) if the character is brought in as a mainstay of the titular series (though I don't see her sticking around with the rebellion for any length of time).

I hope there is a place for a new tradition bringing comic characters into live action, animated series would be awesome (as soon as animation department have to make new stories). The only thing I know is that Aphra needs even more fan support as she already has. Action figure was a good sign back in a few months, but it is not enough!!!, and I believe if Gillen keeps delivering that experience it won`t take long to see her somewhere else...

Now this is unexpected, but very exiting, 'cause her story continues, and I can`t wait to see how she escaped and what is the next "die trying"...

Also very surprising that it's going to have a new writer, Simon Spurrier instead of the characters creator Kieron Gillen. Looking at the image I don't see Black Krrsantan, Triple Zero or BT, so guess we say goodbye to those characters.

But I'm happy that her story continues!

Awesome? I am sorry, but I have the opposite opinion. I thought the issue was terrible, perhaps the worse issue since Marvel started publishing Star Wars comics again. The writing was atrocious. One moment Darth Vader is sensing Aphra and says he feels something infuriating; the next moment he lets Aphra escape. One moment Aphra is happy she does not have to kill the Hutt and shows some morals; the next moment she lies on the beach and shoots Tukan like it is nothing. And do not get me started about the fourth-wall breaking. I like when Deadpool and Spider-Man do it, but it has no place in Star Wars comics.

I agree that it wasn't one of the stronger issues. Somehow for me the drawing style felt a bit weird. And there were some inconsistencies in the writing as you pointed out, specialy the Vader thing. The fourth wall breaking didn't bother me that much. I liked the ending with BT and Triple-zero though, that poor Rodian!

I must admit that BT and Triple-Zero taking control over the Rodian was a quite cool idea.

Just liked how this arc ended, there are much worse issues (maybe arcs) in canon comics, but it is an area for some experiments.

    - Vader sensed her in the end only (iconic quote from ANH) and I believe it's because of Rur - ancient Jedi disturbed our beloved Darth much more than little girl hiding under the bush. Isn`t it a great mistery what are the those "gifts" for Palpatine, there are a few another crystals? Another story to tell?
    - Aphra is a great character explained in issue #2 "Oh--The psychologist says I may have some issues. Fair to warn you.", and this the best way to describe her behaviour, that`s what I liked first when they introduced her and one of her first quotes: "Oh, son of a".

Also, need to mention that I like reference to her story in "From The Certain Point Of View" with Dantooine ice-twist...

No offence, just an opinion, and all above is just a point of view - not arguing...

    Cheers,
    A
