Seeing as Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Enemy) was recently announced to direct the film, I'm wondering what you guys think of the idea.

Personally, I'm very excited for it. Sure, it's an unnecessary sequel, but the team working on it is very strong, Denis Villeneuve is a fantastic director, and Harrison Ford called the script the best thing he's ever read. I think we may have something special on our hands here.

Ford says its the best thing he ever read, and that could be saying a lot...he has done so many fantastic characters in the past. I trust him, its gonna be good for sure. hell i might even be first in line. ;)

I wonder if Ford will be the main character or a mentor role for a new lead.

i think once we see TFA we will have a better idea of what he is physically capable of. I think it might be similar to what he did in Enders Game.

I'm very interested to see how this one turns out. Not only do I love the original, but I'm also a big Philip K. Dick fan. I hope that whatever the story is, it incorporates some elements from other PK Dick books. (Time to go back and re-read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep... it's been awhile!)

Voxx, I agree with you. I would expect Deckard to be more of a mentor character in this one, unless they forego the action hero thing entirely and delve more into the psychological aspects of Dick's work and make it more a "thinking man's" Blade Runner. I don't expect that they'll do that, though. In fact, I'd be very surprised if they give any more than a passing nod to Philip Dick's work. More likely than not, this will be about Deckard coming out of retirement and working with/training a younger Blade Runner to go after another band of renegade replicants.

I'd bet they do address the implied question as to whether or not Deckard himself was a replicant.

i hope not. that sounds like one of those cookie cutter franchise movies. its to obvious...iv never read the books but they sound interesting. the best script he's ever read would have to be a somewhat original story right? lets hope.

Hello Cantina members. Welcome to the Official Blade Runner 2 Thread. Feel fee to share any official info, personal thoughts and speculation on the upcoming sequel in this thread. For all of the Blade Runner fans out there, we know 2016 is a special year in more than one way when it comes to essential characters in the original film and the production of the sequel. 2016 is the incept year of Roy Batty, Pris and Zhora, the replicant "villains" of the original installment. Also, this month, july, 2016 is the beginning of the filming of the sequel with a release date of october 6, 2017. I don't know about you, but I am way stoked to see this film. It's only, 34 years in the making which is a year more than the wait we had to endure for the star wars ST. To be honest, Blade Runner and The Empire Strikes Back are my all time favorite sci-fi films ( I know, TESB is more fantasy than sci-fi). I pray the sequel lives up to the original. Harrison Ford said Blade Runner 2 is the "best script he's ever had."

    such a great movie
one of the most powerful thing about this film is it could have been set 500 years in the past and still have a powerful message because it deals with immortal human values, the respect for humanity and most important: a message of anti slavery. there was a strong emphasis on the part of ridley to make the viewers understand that the replicant are indeed like humans they have a soul.

right from the beginning of the movie you know its a masterpiece ...the Symbolism of the the reflection of the flame in the omniscient eye that oversees the dystopian evil city that tyrell corp lives in ... the reflection of the flame in tyrell's glasses ....quotes like "nothing the god of biomechanics wouldnt let you in heavens for" the symbolism of the origami..... "quite an experience to live in fear isnt it?" ......knowing that deckard actually gives a damn about human life after roy dies..... the symbolism of the dove Flying through the rain.

we still have great writers for BR2 i think it might be a great film too

You really hit on some great points. There is absolutely nothing about Blade Runner that I didn't like or accept as beautiful art. Today, 34 years later I still learn from, and am in awe of that film. The sun setting behind the leaning skyscraper. The flying car traffic and the way they glided along through the air. The dark and the constant rain. The view from Deckard's balcony. Jesus it must have been like 300 stories high! The genetically man made animals. The dialogue of the fugitive replicants. It wasn't your normal style of english dialogue which gave them a sort of creepy, sub human off beat edge that you wanted to hear more and more of. I mean the overall style of the movie, from the cinematography, to the sets, to the wardrobe to the incredible soundtrack we're IMO, presented in such a way that they will never grow old or become outdated. It looks like it could have been made in 2016 which just goes to show how far ahead of it's time it was. I loved how when we first see the inside of Tyrell's "apartment", it's a lavish art decko interior design that loudly contrasts the cold, harsh, polluted, crowded outside cityscape environment. I also loved how there we're these huge near abandoned sectors. It gave the viewer a sense of danger and unpredictability. Then there we're my favorite lines in cinema history, The "C - Beams Speech". "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c - beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All of those moments will be lost in time, like, tears....in....rain". Or when Roy Batty tells the designer of his eyes, "if only you could see what I've seen with your eyes". Brilliant script writing there. Even how the replicant's eyes would glow in the dark like a cat or an.......ahem....owl. Great symbolism there. Yes. I too feel that the replicants had souls and they just wanted to live like we all do, and that that was being driven home by the writers. I never believed that humans are the only ones who possess souls anyway. That's a very narrow minded and arrogant way of thinking IMO.

    X Cop, X Blade Runner

Now, what will be canon. Which version will the sequel be based on.

Is it the happy ending or not?

Never got into Blade Runner. I've read the book many years before the movie and it had nothing to do with PKD's story.

How could they have not talk about Wilbur Mercer ?

Would you believe it if I told you, I've never seen Blade Runner? Oh and a construction worker tearing down the set was killed the other day. :(

No. I've seen pieces of it or clips. I've always been meaning to see it but never did. I probably ought to go out and rent it.
