That's a good point. And I'm racking my mind trying to remember if the original version was a gritty and smoky as the version we have today. I'd swear some more carnage was added for the Special Editions/Blu-Ray releases, but don't quote me on that.

Going with EU though (which yes this probably wasn't canon even back then), it apparently says they used a flamethrower. Per the Wookieepedia, with the source being this http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/When_the_Desert_Wind_Turns:_The_Stormtrooper's_Tale, "According to the recollection of stormtrooper Davin Felth, the farmers were killed after Owen spat in the face of the squad's commanding officer,Mod Terrik, they were then each shot with a blaster before their bodies were semi-cremated with a flamethrower."

I can kind of dig that. It's gritty and brutal at least. Of course, being the EU, it went all hokey and the Wookieepedia immediately says this after "Their execution was ordered by Darth Vader, who watched it via hololink, feeling it was "revenge" for their supposed weakness, and "failure" to defend his mother." Commence massive sigh...

I thought they lit a match after getting doused in gasoline by accident.

Not to kick a dead bantha but I think this topic was RESOLVED. ;)
To me, the fact that "dewback calvary" storm troopers had flame-throwers(incinerary weapons) PLUS the newer EP7 artwork/production designs that show troopers deploying flame weapons explains the deaths of Uncle Owen/Aunt Beru.

If you mean the fan film/satire: Troops, you are right. It's spot on & very well made for the era.
Id also suggest www.impstherelentless.com . It's not ho ho funny but it's a lot like Troops.

I wondered a long time about the scale of destruction and the state of the corpses in this scene and came to the conclussion for myself that it was a surgical strike from the star destroyer in orbit.

It's been established the "dewback calvary" deployed a flame weapon on the couple.
In the EU, troopers interrogated Uncle Owen & Aunt Beru. Owen told the squad to go #%*+ themselves so the troopers torched them. (stormtrooper)

But if it were flamethrowers, there wouldn't be just skeletons left of them... And Thermal Detonators would have completely vaporized them.

The Obliteration of the Wampa by the Probe Droid in ESB leads me to think that they were killed by Energy Weapons.

Wait, what? A Probe Droid killed a Wampa in ESB? Where was I when this happened?

I have seen this theory thrown around quite a lot. I personally don't think there is nay weight to it. Reason being is I feel that the empire relies on this guy too much in other stories and sources. If he was such a valuable asset, why wouldn't the empire have him on there side as an agent? I mean if credits was his thing the empire I am sure could afford him? But it also says something about the imperial forces themselves. I understand the reason for a bounty hunter to capture the falcon in TESB, but to have Fett in on an operation like looking for the droids I believe imperial forces could handle that one.

We've never seen StormTrooper flamethrowers in action. We don't know how they work. Maybe they have amore napalm like quality where the spit a burning goo that sticks to the subject and continues to burn. Or maybe the troopers were hungry, cannibalized them and then burned the evidence. You never know.

A: The Force Awakens has FLAME TROOPERS so it's a good bet the evil empire or the Tatooine garrison had a flame trooper AKA Fire-Trooper, ;) .
B: As posted, the Dewback Calvary had flame weapons. The hot, tired troopers had the huge lizards to haul the fuel or gear around. It's not a huge stretch in logic.
C: The way the bones/bodies are positioned, they might have been in a torched structure, burned or got hit then only the bones remained as the fled outside. I'm not arson investigator or CSI expert but there are a few ways Owen & Beru could have been murdered. By Stormtroopers NOT directly by Boba Fett or "surgical air strike" .

At the Beginning of ESB, when the Probe Droid arrived on Hoth he blastered a snowcovered Wampa to ashes.

But it looked to me like they were killed outside and died on the spot. Could also have been the heavy blasters, we saw in Mos Eisley.

First Probe Droids or "Viper Droids" are its not he-she.
Wookiepedia states the droid sent to the Hoth system did in fact shoot at a Wampa in the blizzard storm that Han & Luke get caught in. It's not in TESB but it might be in the novel or comic book adaption.

I was thinking too, the murders of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru are ripe for a Star Wars/True Detective parody. :D
    Alright alright alright ....

    TFM
    (boba fett)

ps: The Wookiepedia data is wrong about the Hoth Echo Base invasion. Darth Vader did NOT plan a ground attack on the Hoth Rebel forces based on the Viper Droid's intel. Vader force choked the general for coming out of hyper-space too close to the Rebel scanners which screwed up the air attack/bombing. This error ticked Vader off and they had to mount a ground assault on the Rebel base.
