I've read some articles about the toys for TLJ/Rogue One not selling as well as projected. But I'm going to go out there and make a bold prediction that the Solo toys are going to sell pretty darn well.

    There are a few reasons:

A). Nostalgia factor will target seasoned fans.

B.) The looks of the costumes, vehicles, and characters seem to lend themselves very well to bright and exciting toys and playsets.

C). I think the "fun/adventure" vibes will appeal to kids more than the emotional/darker vibes of TLJ. Based on the trailer alone, I'm getting more of a kid-friendly ROTJ vibe while the last installments seemed more adult/YA in nature.

D.) Due to the production delays, movie issues, previous lack of interest...there will simply be less Solo toys on the market while the other installments provided too many.

E.) And I'm going to say it...male lead(especially a familiar one with a lot of cool gadgets) more male cast members will simply appeal more to little boys. And while there are many female fans, it is mostly boys/men who buy the toys. I am not against leading lady characters or saying the toy companies shouldn't produce the girl figures, of course not. Rey was my first TFA purchase. I'm a female fan myself and LOVE the cool girl barbie-sized figures and would have wanted every one as kid. But they are simply not selling..The well documented facts are that the girl character toys are leftover on the shelves (just walk into any toy store for evidence.)

Anyhow, just a prediction. I'm starting to think this one will surprise us all in a good way.

IF there's more than just a small amount of SA (special articulation) and the rest of the line is 5 POA then that will be running true to Hasbro/LFL form for some time now (sadly) but if they do not limit the toy line to this lazy old method of making figures then it'd be awesome not to mention refreshing.

Star Wars toys are simply not selling like how they used to in the early 2000s. Go to any toy shop and you'll see shelves and aisles full of the stuff unsold, with some items still unsold from 2015's The Force Awakens. Some discount stores have Star Wars toys marked down at ridiculously cheap prices for clearance. It's sad and a bit humiliating to see Star Wars characters in discount bins.

It may be attributed to kids not being interested in Star Wars as much as their parents or grandparents once were, or they are "playing Star Wars" digitally with video games instead.

There are some big issues that affected TLJ toy sales that I think will contrast with Solo.

A.) TLJ pretty much split the fandom. It's either loved or hated, so there goes half the sales from the get-go. Note: I generally liked the film, but it admittedly had some problems. Solo *may* be more universal. They'll have to really mess with the character to split the fandom like TLJ did, but since its a prequel I don't think it has the potential to be quite as divisive, since we all know who Han becomes in the OT. If people don't like it, they just won't like it...I don't think people will be as fiery about it.

    B) The returning characters in the TLJ looked pretty much the same, as did the toys. There are more notable differences in costumes for characters in ANH and ESB. Rey, Finn, and Poe in TFA really don't look that different from the characters in TFA. If a kid has TFA figures, there's almost no point in buying the new ones. They're so similar! ANH gave kids a chance to get Hoth, Cloud City variations etc. These new Solo characters have a dynamic and fresh look. Qira looks different than Gyn and Rey. Lando looks CAF. New villain design is impressive and unique.

The Lego and high quality stuff is doing absolutely fine (Hot Toys, 6 inch Hasbro figures). It is the low quality stuff like the 3.75 inch figures or those immense clunky ones that stay on the shelves. This doesn't necessarily have something to do with Star Wars, but more so with Hasbro's marketing strategy. The 5 pos 3.75 stuff was already underselling when they lauched their Rebels line. :)

Hasbro should improve its quality and just give some more interesting, detailed and high quality products and the people will buy.

    Exactly, another important reason.

I don't actually think 'fan wars' have anything to do with it. As I said, the other products are selling fine. It is the low quality stuff that is dumbed en masse on the store shelves that is suffering.

Physical toys now have a lot more competition than it did in the 1970's/1980's.

Kids now more than ever have all the different platforms for gaming and then there's social media etc.

Exactly. I is why I have never bought a single 5 POA figure, but have over 300 fully articulated figures.

I feel like the sales of physical toys and action figures are most likely down in general. Not just for Star Wars and franchise films.

Toy aisles in stores look a lot different than they did when I was in my toy buying heyday 20 years ago. What I buy now, for myself never gets opened and sits in my office as decor.

But I do agree that I think the toys will have more of an appeal to kids for Solo then they did TLJ. Solo looks fun! TLJ was not meant to be a fun movie.
