Lucasfilm is being very smart about not squashing any of the buzz surrounding this film, especially the Darth Vader buzz. It's also nice to see that they're allowing the actors to talk about their characters. I'm especially intrigued by Donnie Yen's character. He said the character is important and hinted that they are strong in the Force. It would be really awesome to see a non-Jedi Force-sensitive good guy for once, especially a martial artist. Someone who could possibly throw down with Vader for a couple of rounds. I like the idea of a force pike or force staff of some kind. I really liked General Grievous' guard droids in the prequel films and The Clone Wars because of their weapons and I'd like to see more of that kind of thing in Star Wars.

well Ashoka is not a Jedi. Maybe Ezra is going Down the same parth.

it will be very strange if Vader is the only one with a lightsaber.

All the Star Wars movies have a lightsaber duel RO will be no different. I predict Mads Mikkelsen's Galen, a morally grey character involved with the Empire(perhaps an inquisitor) will be the son of two Jedi who left the order but not a Jedi himself. Very strong in the force and trained in the use of a Saber, I reckon he'll go rogue, take on Vader and save the rebels and their mission in the process.

The general rumor about his character right now is him being one of the architects of The Original Death Star I but I believe it's been said somewhere that there are no duels in R1 and no force and no Jedi according to Gareth Edwards but Donnie Yen seemed to hint at something different in his AMA .

Seems clear to me that he's using "The Force" as a metaphor for good fortune here. But we know so little about this movie, it's impossible to say for sure.

Eh, all previous Star Wars movies have had a lightsaber duel, but Rogue One is going for a different kind of tone and story, the gritty war story tone if you will. I have no doubt that we will see Vader's lightsaber in action, but this is supposed to be a story about the normal people fighting against the Empire. The fact that they wont have any Jedi on their side will serve to heighten the stakes and show just how dire the situation is for normal people trying to fight Vader and the Empire.

The real promise that lies behind the Anthology films is getting to see the Star Wars galaxy from unique perspectives that we don't get to see in the Saga films, so we shouldn't base our expectations too heavily on what has come before.

I hope that at the ending of the movie we will see Darth Vader remorselessly kill all the Rogue One members (except one who will survive and give the Death Star data to the rebels) with his lightsaber. A bloody massacre, sort of a lightsaber duel, lol.

The whole point of these anthology films is to EXPAND the universe, and try some new stuff. So them turning around and going "well we need a lightsaber duel just because the other films have had them" kind of goes against that idea.

Gareth Edwards has described this movie as a "gritty war film" focused around the common soldiers where there ARE NO Jedi. I'm inclined to take him at his word for now. And frankly, I don't want to see any Jedi or lightsaber duels in this film. The idea of them NOT being there is one of the things that intrigues me the most, we can take a break from that stuff for at least one movie.

Seeing Vader cut people down with HIS lightsaber however, yeah that would be cool to see.

I doubt we will see anything more than Vader igniting his lightsaber to use on some doomed Rebels, but if we do, it could be a fight between Donnie Yen's (rather Jedi-looking) character using a weapon like the FO Stormtrooper that fought Finn in TFA against Vader while the other Rebels escape. It won't end well for him.

It can be a mostly gritty story about the rank and file and still include other elements. If Vader's there, you can be sure there'll be a force using, lightsaber wielding opponent at some stage. Do you seriously think they're going to repeat George's mistake and once again miss an opportunity to depict Vader in all his pomp, Disney are far too savvy for that. It's hardly likely that they'll be telling us about it either.

I don't think the absence of lightsaber wielding opponents for Vader to kill will detract from Vader in the slightest in the film. In fact, seeing Vader burning down everything around him and slaughtering Rebel troops from the perspective of those troops will only serve to make him seem more god like in the film.

Lets take a look at some of the canon comics to see an examples of Vader being a total badass without the presence of a lightsaber wielding opponent.

Good post, I think you're right, there probably will be scenes like the ones you've posted above. Personally I just cannot see Disney passing up the opportunity to have Vader involved in a lightsaber duel again as well.
