so actually you think because he's a character and not a real person is even more reason to need an excuse for his behavior? okay.

why do you mention relating to psychopaths? no one is talking about relating to psychopaths and you bring it up out of the blue.

I had so many discussions about that with strong women and it has been a pain in the ass for me to prove that it's OKAY if she feels and is vulnerable or weak or emotional. It's what makes her human.
And also...I'm probably the only person that likes the fact that she has been punched in the face by those unkar plutt's thugs when she defends bb-8 on Jakku. And not cuz i condone physical abuse of women, duh...the fact that she takes it standing and retaliates immediatelly...tells me how strong she really is. She aint a victim. She is a fighter. And has that 'do or die going all in mentality' that has probably served her quite well in the past growing up on a place like Jakku. Power isnt about being strongest, but bold.

Exactly!! And wouldn't you say that that fact...despite him cutting his son's hand off is one of the key redeeming points of Darth Vader the terrible? That he had love and compassion for his son that went beyond his dedication to the Dark Side order of the Sith? And he showed it?

I agree with the statement he never wanted to hurt her. That is so true and so obvious if you look at the movie without black and white goggles. Their final fight, he is the one that dominates it. Hip wound or no hip wound. He forgot about that the moment she ignited the lightsaber (no punding on it). And he is pushing, pursuing, dominating the fight....sort of chasing her till they reach the precipice. That, in terms of his attacks is the farthest he is willing to go. The only thing left is to really hurt her or kill her, which i can never see him do it. He feels protective of her. And thats why he offers her to be her teacher. When she refuses he knows that he should kill her. But he never really attacks after that. Only defends. Cuz if he did attack. She would go down. Perhaps he was expecting her to feel the same about him, and spare him. I dunno. But i dont think that ripping the ground between them after he was down is accidental.

And here is where I disagree with you. I dont think he wants to capture her for Snoke. And I base that in the fact that Snoke's order to 'briiiiiiig heeeeer tooooo hiiiiim' is so far from benign. There is no doubt in my mind that Snoke has nothing but sadistic intentions towards her. Probably cuz he himself isnt Force Sensitive and has some inadequacy issues about that. Perhaps he was in the past but was stripped off it. (I read one interesting meta about Snoke being an ancient Whill who was degraded by his peers cuz if something he did).
As oppose to Snoke, Kylo has many intentions towards her, but none sadistic. He respects her power and wants to better it by showing her the ways of the Force. That right there is direct disobedience towards FO and Snoke's orders, and similar to how he wants to acquire the map instead of settling for destroying it (his quarrel with Hux from the beginning of the movie) this disobedience tells me that he has agendas of his own and that he is not just Snoke's puppet.

Yes he needs a reason. Valid one. Noble one. Not saving his skin kind. If he is to be a hero. And not excuse, justification. He sadly cant do much about his past selfish choices. But what he can, and i think he will do in tlj, take responsibility for it and correct it in his future actions. Or he won't cuz he is a FO double agent :D (lolz...i dont really see it but that would be so funny)

Oh so we werent sharing who we cant relate to or feel compassion to? It is a sequitor from that :) if I misunderstood, than sorry, my bad. I normally just follow the conversation points :)

And btw....if compassion is absolute then you should have it for all? :p

i never called anyone a psychopath. i wouldn't talk about people that way unless it was based on some clinical evidence.
and i have repeatedly stated that i have compassion for all (except maybe the fishy-eyed toilet monster).

being able to relate to someone and having compassion for them are two different things.
i find lots of people completely unrelatable and still try to feel compassion for them.
because, again, compassion doesn't require reasoning for me.

    it's something given, not earned.
