Hello friends of the Cantina! While I was answering a fellow members post something came to my mind and I decided to share it with you guys as my very first thread cause I would like to know your opinions.

Ever since Rogue One was announced I have heard many people calling it the first SW spin-off film. When I think about this I have to ask, can we really call this movie a spin-off? Rogue One is a movie that takes place right before the OT and it ties perfectly with both the OT and the PT. It follows the very same story without deviating from it in any way so why then do people call it a spin-off?

I know that a spin-off is something that is derived from one or more already existing works but does the term really apply if it just a part of the very same story? Shouldn't a spin-off be something like taking a character like Elis Helrot who we have hardly seen and making a film about how he smuggled things for Jabba and competed with his rival Nabrun Leids? I think that would be a spin-off as it is a story in the SW universe that doesn't tie directly to any other movie but if Disney were to make a movie about how the Rebels abandoned Yavin 4 and made their way to Hoth and built Echo Base, does that really count as a spin off even if it is following the same plot as the OT movies?

Can this really be called a spin-off or is this term just being used because it's easier than naming the movie SW Rogue One episode 3 and a half?

This depends if it stays a movie with a finished storyline (handing the death star plans) without any surviving members to join into ST. But personally I'm not really sure this is what we get and maybe it tells the backstory to something that leads into episode VIII. Of course they would never tell this in advance. So we will see...;)

Interesting question. The answers will differ from perspectives. My answer would be this:

Rogue One is part of the 'Star Wars Story' franchise, right? right. Technically 'spin-off' isn't the right word to describe Rogue One. It is an Anthology film - a story that takes place within the same universe. The 'Star Wars Story' franchise will be a collection of anthology films... maybe not even a trilogy but more. Creatively, Lucasfilm now have a lot more to work with in film.

My conclusion is; yes. Really, Rogue One and our future 'Star Wars Story' films will be spin-off's - they will expand our universe. Think of it like this, the SW Expanded Universe gave us lots of novels, comics, and games. Now our universe has canon novels, comics, TV shows, and full length Anthology Films (spin-off's). :)
