I may have missed something during my initial viewing of the movie, so if anyone has an explanation that would be great as it's been bothering me since I saw it.

Near the end of the movie, after Rey, Chewie and Finn arrive back to the Resistance base after Star Killer base was destroyed, why do Rey and Leia walk straight to each other and embrace? Rey was taken by Kylo before Leia first appears in the movie, so this hug is literally their first meeting, they have never met before. What's with that? I feel like there was perhaps a scene cut from earlier in the movie perhaps that might explain it. Han has just been lost and Chewie and Leia walk by each other without a word while she goes and hugs a girl she's never met before. Please tell me the writing was not that stupid and I've missed something.

    Becasue...The Force.

That's all I can come up with. I was wondering the same thing a few minutes ago.

Yep thought the same thing which makes me think they're related or have some type of force bond:

it was mentioned earlier on in the film that Han had told Leia all about Rey when they arrived. So part of it would be "this must be the girl Han told me about"

it would appear that this was a scene that was shot and ultimately cut...

    (from the production schedule)
INT DAY - 240 - RESISTANCE BASE - LEIA'S AREA • Han Solo tells Leia that Rey is worth saving.

other things at play could be that she saw Rey was sad and wanted to comfort her or an unconscious force bond because they might be related...(if Rey ends up being Luke's)

my guess is it's a combo of all of these things

She also seems to see in her eyes that Han didn't make it. He meant a lot to both of them, so it was comforting. Also there's the force as well.

People write this stuff as if no one - writer, director, actors, cameramen, etc... - thought of this. Let me just say you are making it too complicated. Rey was there when the love of Leia's life died and was a witness to it. Rey in a very short time was able to learn what we already knew - that Han Solo was a great man. It creates an immediate bond between the two. You see this all the time in real world circumstances. Even leaving the force completely out of the scene, I think it makes complete sense.

I just watched the movie so I want to think about this some more but my first impression is Rey's memory was somehow blocked, just like her training, by the time she meets Leia she remembers that she is her aunt and that Luke is her father, I see no reason for why they would send Rey to meet Luke if not.

I think Leia had heard about it all before the ship arrived home and knew that Rey was the least stable about it because Han, as Kylo said, was becoming like the dad she never had but wanted. And she knew the connection and embraced someone who was feeling similar. It was fine.

It's a shame that scene wasn't included. You get the feeling there's quite a few scenes that were cut which could have un-muddled the plot a little. Why couldn't the movie have been 10 or 15 minutes longer? Would have had zero problem with that. Either that or cut some of that silly scene with the monsters on Han's ship instead. It wasn't needed.

Rey was present when Han died and she's the only sober one among the three that landed back there and Rey and Leia feel the force within each other and...GIRL POWER .

This is Star Wars and not everything gets explained. You're supposed to make it make sense for yourself.
I personally like the idea that 'The Force' instinct was the reason, as both Leia and Rey are force sensitive. Also, they both knew Han with affection.

What is weird about this scene is when Chewie just walks past Leia. Han just got killed. The two beings with the strongest connection to him blanked each other. Very very jarring.

Jarring, yes. Completely took me out of the movie for a moment. I do like the movie but there's so many of these little things that felt wrong, it's frustrating. It could have been so much better.

Chewie had just lost his best friend. He wanted to be alone. He needed time to reflect. How much do you expect to squeeze into a 135 minute film?

Leia doesn't even acknowledge him. And surely Chewie would offer his support to Leia?! But instead she hugs Rey, a person she doesn't know. Come on, stop trying to defend the indefensible.

The Chewie part is weird of course but do you really think she doesn't know Rey? Are you kidding me?

I would suggest that if they hadn't time to fit in what are very important events if they want to be true to these characters, they should have extended the movie by 10 or 15 minutes or cut out a scene like the monsters on Han's ship and instead spend screen time on what's important - the characters.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that a 20 to 25 minute longer runtime would have made a huge different to this movie. If you've read the shooting schedule, you'll know there's a lot of small but important scenes that apparently ended up on the cutting room floor, and I think it's to the detriment of the movie. Real shame.

I do think it's absolutely vital for episode VIII to give time to the characters to reflect and grieve on Han's death, early in the movie.

And the Knights of The Ren backstory probably is now on the cutting room floor too. Along with a lot of Mazs' dialogue from the trailers

I certainly hope not. The Knights of Ren in particular need to be expanded on. Those mythological story arcs are what the Original trilogy were built on.
