I felt a lot stronger about The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi after my first viewings compared to how i feel about The Rise of Skywalker, but i suspect that my impression could change with a second viewing. Overall, it feels like they have given it everything they could to make an enjoyable movie, and for the most part it is. For me it was a great adventure movie, with a breakneck pace and some really high emotional tops. I laughed and cried and was entertained. Ended up liking som character choices I didn't expect to like, and disliking others. That's how it is sometimes. At the end of the day, I would say the other ST movies are better, but I am mostly happy.

Hmmmm, don’t know what to take from this. Im seeing it Friday so I can’t comment yet. We 100% agreed on TFA and 100% disagreed on TLJ but I respect your opinion regardless.

No I haven't. I saw the opening leaked on youtube, the crawl and the first 4 minutes. No Spoilers, I can't judge the whole film but from the opening it looked really REALLY rushed, like something they should have spent a few more minutes setting up is over with in a flash. I'm assuming the whole movie is this way, bu tI could be wrong.

I’ll say this about SW movies, I rarely can give a specific grade after 1 viewing. We are diehards so we watch it a different way than casual fans. We see every detail, every character arc, every tie in, etc. and a 2nd/3rd viewing are when you can put everything together and really assess the movie. That’s why we can watch them endlessly for years and years cause we aren’t watching it like we do most movies.

Oh yeah. The main movies (TFA, TLJ and TROS) the first viewing is always tense, I always concerned if I will see something stupid or that I don't like.
The second viewing I try to focus in the story and tie all the dots.
Third and more I'm much more relaxed.

I’ve tried something new as I’ve actually read some spoilers for TROS so I kind of know what happens, but don’t know HOW it’s executed in terms of context. Now I’ve stayed away from specific spoilers, as I’ve read more about the plot in the 3 acts. I’m hoping this will help my first viewing as I know what type of food I ordered, I just don’t how good it’s gonna taste! Lol

I prefer to go completely blind. I had great experiences with TLJ and RO doing like this.

Put me firmly in the 'Loved' camp. As someone who loves the OT, likes TFA and the Prequels and is fairly indifferent about the spin offs and TLJ I have to say this is hands down my favourite of the new films. Definitely one for the fans, it's messy, convoluted and requires a massive capacity to suspend belief but I loved it, warts and all. Felt the same after walking out of ROTS and TFA, problems are numerous and obvious but as a fan I loved it to pieces.

    Complaints?

Not enough Sidious. They really should have had him in this from 7 though so it's not this movies fault.

    Massively underwhelming story
    Looks great visually

Starts well enough slows down to a halt and ends on a whimper for me

Trailers kinda show the best bits

hope you find something in it

Honestly....I say this too often....but....no SW fan can properly judge a SW film on one viewing. Too many emotions, too much baggage from oneself and forums like this and other more obsessive places on the internetzzz.

I realized this before TFA started. I had to check myself. It was a SW movie and everybody just walks in with anxiety about it, about everything.

It's sincerely pathological to the fanbase and really needs to stop.

I can't wait for tomorrow. I'll likely like it, but I won't really make a judgement or 'ranking' (another silly thing to do in an age where we have 3 trilogies of vastly different movie eras, multiple tv shows, thousands of novels and comics, and more on the way) until a second viewing...although getting that done while finishing Xmas shopping is going to be difficult AF.

Oh man, that was a disappointing end.

In terms of pace it was like TFA on steroids.

Everything moves so fast you barely have time to get used to each latest scene plot and surroundings/characters.

I’m still a bit confused about some of the end plot, the two friends who were with me didn’t have a clue about the same bits either when we talked on the way to my car afterwards (I’ve seen all the leaks in the months leading up to this and still it didn’t make much sense actually seeing it on screen)

Some people in my screening were laughing and shaking their heads at two key emotional points in the film. It was just executed badly at times.

Everything was quickly explained, objects and characters conveniently showed up without hardly any elaboration, there was a lot to process and the editing was poor.

A good example, the extended TV spot with one of the characters visiting the sith location it was pretty much (mostly) uncut from the actual movie. You’d think a TV spot would be cut down for time purposes but that’s a very good example of the fast pace of this film (some of the dialog in that scene was actually sped up in the film!)

Also, one of the major cameos was ridiculously bad. Blink and you’ll miss it.

It’s not a bad film, it does have some impressive action scenes but overall it’s very disappointing and felt like a rushed film. The start and end were the negative points, I actually enjoyed the middle of the film a lot where it slowed down briefly.

Really wanted to love it but unfortunately it’s the weakest in this trilogy, for me. It seemed to be missing the magic and ended on a whimper.

The highlight for me was C3PO, some of his lines landed well - reminiscent of TESB C3PO.

May not go and see it again tomorrow at my second booked viewing as I feel a few day’s break will help maybe.

Will have a think tomorrow. Hopefully a second viewing will help.

But to be fair about my "style over substance" critique, SW movies have always mixed and played to different strengths in this regard.
And like @Rieekan said about pacing - these things are often just a matter of personal taste.
We all know we're in for a JJ ride and while some things resonated with me (some gorgeous frames, jokes and banter that landed, subtle 80's sci-fi references [Flight of The Navigator anyone?]) some others just didn't so much...as yet...

I haven't been on this forum in like 6-8 months. What happened to it I remember before TFA and TLJ there were tons of people on here and threads were exploding, Now it seems almost dead.

As someone who's only ever seen one Star Wars film - The Phantom Menace - in a theater more than once*, I disagree.

    * The only reason I've seen The Phantom Menace in a theater more than once is because I saw it once during its initial release in 1999 and once when they re-released it in 3D (even though I don't actually like 3D cinema all that much).

Yikes. Haven't seen it yet. Hopefully it exceeds expectations. Super love Mando. Loved TFA and Solo. Liked RO. Mixed feelings for TLJ. Some of the unintentionally discovered leaks...disturb me.

    I voted good.

Plot: C- Sorry, but it's very convoluted. The whole trilogy seems disjointed and I can see why some people are absolutely gonna hate it. It's not JJ's fault. Basically, after TLJ threw out the main plot points of TFA, it was near impossible to have a tight plot. That being said JJ did the best with what he had and even made some of the plot points look plausible.

    Music: A+ Classic John Williams
Special effects: A+ Well, if you are easily startled, maybe take some medication with you. This is one loud, flashy movie.
Acting: A This is basically what saved the movie for me. It had a very predictable plot but the actors gave it the feeling of a very good movie. Would've been a bad movie if it didn't have Adam Driver, Ian McDiarmid, Daisey Ridley,John Boyega and Anthony Daniels (C3PO was great in this movie)
Starwarsiness: A+ This is the most Star Wars movie of all Star Wars. Some people are gonna absolutely love it for delivering some very good fan service and there are a couple of obvious nods to the fandom.

    Sequel trilogy ranking: TFA>TROS>TLJ
    TFA: 8,5/10
    TLJ: 6,5/10
    TROS: 7,5/10

Just came home from the theater, here are some of my (chaotic) thoughts of the movie:
Having precisely 0 expectations for this movie after The last Jedi (because TLJ killed an opportunity of this trilogy to be good and The Rise of Skywalker proves it), I would lie if I said I didn't have fun watching The Rise of Skywalker. Of course, it wasn't 'good' fun because the movie was so great, but rather 'bad' fun because of what a clown fiesta it is.
The first act of the movie doesn't feel like an actual movie, but rather like some video editor's demo reel which they made to apply for a job in a video editing company.
TROS kind of undoes TLJ, but does it in a way that both haters of TLJ and those who liked it will at least have mixed feelings towards it or otherwise hate it(Rey's lineage).
Unfortunately, the movie suffers from a lack of creativity and fails to deal with the void in which 'the story' was left after TLJ and it has to resort to rehashing both the OT and the PT (but even the PT wasn't so 'Sith heavy' as The Rise of Skywalker).
It doesn't feel like a 'LONG AWAITED EPIC CONCLUSION TO THE SKYWALKER SAGA' movie, it feels kind of 'small'.
To be honest, I think, The Rise of Skywalker would have been a better movie if it was given to Rian Johnson to write and direct, and this is coming from someone who absolutely hated TLJ. It just....feels like he could have finished better what he started in TLJ, like I'm pretty sure he wouldn't do what JJ did in this movie (sorry, can't elaborate without spoilers).
I will not point out all the small things that I didn't like about the movie even though there's plenty. There's a lot of good, too. Visuals are stunning, John Williams aced it as always.
To elaborate about the 'bad' fun I mentioned earlier, so there's a secondary story line about 'the spy' and when the spy is revealed it's done in such a hilariously bad 'old James Bond movie' way that I could not contain myself from laughing from it as I kept recalling this moment for the rest of the movie. Again, can't say more without spoilers.
Overall, not mad at JJ, not going to hate on the movie on forums, reddits, etc. Just disappointed in how the trilogy had a potential to be something great, but ultimately will be remembered as the mediocrity of the Saga.
Feel free to ask questions and have a nice day.

The Rise of Skywalker is a good, alebit rushed and underwhelming conclusion to the Skywalker Saga.

The story has many highs and lows, most of the humour lands, and it certainly takes some narrative risks. Unfortunately, it feels more like the beginning of a journey, than the end. It also undoes/ retcons certain aspects of TLJ, which some people may like or dislike. For those worried it may be a rehash of ROTJ, like how TFA borrowed too heavily from ANH, you can rest easy. It's more like TPM, in which whilst elements were borrowed, e.g. Trade Federation Ship replacing the Darth Star, they were made different enough. Most of its lows are due to JJ Abrams trying to cram pack as much as he can into a little over two hours of screentime. Emotional moments are not given enough time to sink in, and because of that, they either land or fall flat. This in turn makes the transitions between scenes sometimes jarring.

Leia is treated with the utmost respect, and despite her limited screentime, makes a big impact story-wise. Ren's arc comes to a natural close, and though it is good, it becomes a tad predictable. C3P0 finally gets included in the main story of an ST episode for once, and it really is a joy seeing him embark on an adventure again with his friends. It really is Rey's episode though, she is the star of this story. Can't really say anything about her though, without going into major spoilers. The cameos are hit or miss for the most part, though some are surprising and leave you wanting more.

The fights were certainly flashier than any we've seen before in the ST, incorporating some of the acrobatics we've come to expect from the PT. Unfortunately, they end far too quickly.

The soundtrack was underwhelming for me, I actually found the TV spot ones better surprisingly. Which is most unusual for a John WIlliams score. The most irritating part of this is the Emperor's theme being overused - it appears several times throughout the film, wearing thin.

    Atm, I'd give it somewhere between a 7.5 to a 7.75.
For comparison's sake, this is about what I'd give ROTS.

    Hey guys!

Just had my second viewing and I freaking loved it. Knowing what would come in the movie I could find more of an emotional built up for myself. It is really weird how my opinion changed with the second viewing. The first viewing just had a lot of expectations and it was quite a lot to take in. So for everyone who didn't like it the first time, I recommend a second viewing. I now love this movie! ^^

    Changed the poll to excellent.
