I found it to be pretty bad.
It really felt like they just had a list of things to check off and didn't bother to figure out how to connect them in a serious manner.
    Blech.

This weekend, probably I'll watch it for the third time. Let's see if the experience will get better or worse.

I just got back from a showing. I enjoyed it. Its not perfect by any means and I have my own issues with it, but overall I liked it.

During the end credits, sitting there thinking about this film, this trilogy and nine movies as a whole I teared up a bit thinking about the future and where they go from here. Good or bad, whatever they do, Star Wars as I've known it feels over.

I have been an outspoken critic of the ST for years, but I just saw TROS, and all I can say is wow! I loved it.

After following the leaks and seeing the first reactions, I was very pleasantly surprised with the film. It wasn't perfect, but me and just about everyone in the theater had an absolute blast.

I just picked I don't like it. but that is not entirely true. I did have a lot of fun and enjoyed a lot of it, but it left some bitter taste. Actually I miss something between I don't like it and good. It was a lot to take in. Some things that didn't work for me that good, fell flat. A bit too much listening to the fans for my taste. A bit like to much butter on not enough bread, to use Bilbos words.
Interesting note. I've been at the cinema with 2 other people and both didn't like the movie at all. the first thing they did afterwards was talking about LoTR because of "Merry".
I actually feel some desire to watch it again.

I didn't expect to see it tonight because of working lots of overtime at work. But I just got home from TROS and wow, what a ride.

If I was a cop I'd pull JJ over for excessive pacing.

This won't be a big review that will be for another time after I see it again. And I do need to see it again. For like 30 to 40 minutes it was a bit all over and made me think of Justice League in that it just needs to get going. But when it does it's Unstoppable like a run away train.

There are so many things to take in packed so full of stuff that I need a few more viewings. I though it was fun, sad, epic, grand, adventurous, questionable, satisfying, crazy, funny, and there were a few things set up that never went anywhere at all. Overall I really liked it. I'm not sure where I'd place it in the 9 movies but it's up there with my favorites.

I also feel like it for sure should have been around 3 hours long. I mean it is a 4 hour movie in about 2 1/2 hours. I'm not joking.

Now if you'll excuse me I need to catch my breath. I just got off the biggest roller-coaster I've ever ridden.

I've just come from my first viewing, and will need to see it again before I could give any sort of detailed breakdown and review. But this is a thread for first reactions and I can give one of those -

    I didn't like it.

I'm a die-hard fan of the originals, the Prequels, Eps 7 and 8, the cartoons, the Mandalorian, and almost all of the Star Wars books I've read. I am extremely forgiving of inconsistencies and openly accepting of new lore. This movie, however, was a bridge too far. Not only did it undercut TLJ - which was expected - but it greatly diminished the story of the entire saga. Victories felt unearned, and the entire opening premise was under-explored and poorly explained.

I did not go into this movie with expectations or demands about what "must" be in it. And, as far as I can tell, my childhood is still intact. The movie was fun, and there were some moments that were true winners. I look forward to watching this movie a second time tomorrow; and I'm interested to see if my head-canon can start to fill in the gaps.

But my first reaction is what it is. If you are a fan of the mythology and overall story of the saga, then this movie is problematic.

While extremely convoluted and rushed with it's setup and first act, JJ really pulled a magic trick here. The surviving characters of old were all used incredibly well (except for Wedge) and the action scenes were very good all around. This is TFA Star Wars turned up to 15.

The resolution to Rey's story, for me.. is satisfying and was the right way to go. Star Wars is about redemption, self betterment and hope, no matter how bleak things look. Very happy with her origin story.

It gets an 8 from me at the moment.

The film did many, many things right.. but needed space to breathe. Sadly, the opening was so overwhelming pace-wise and plot-wise, that it will confuse and disorientate many people on the first watch.

A magical achievement with some boulder-sized storytelling issues.. but JJ's done a good job.

I had a bad feeling about this one.

Thankfully I was wrong and it is on first viewing more than solid.

JJ is the top derivative guy in the business.

I'm a huge Last Jedi fan but it certainly doesn't feel like any repudiation to me but more Abrams staying in the lines more just by natural tendency while running with elements from Johnson.

There is a definite element of seeming to be on a box checking expedition and this movie is like an Atlas rocket at full burn on steroids all the time.

8/10 mid pack in the series.

    Really liked it, voted excellent.

Beginning almost felt more like Indiana Jones than Star Wars, but I can't say that I mind.

I voted excellent. For a first viewing experience. It was- wow! It felt great emotionally, it looked beautiful, it was fun! The story was just about what I'd expect and i stayed spoiler free. That could be a mark against it if you wanted something out of left field. I was fine with it.

There are two plot points/character moments i wasn't super keen on, but they made sense, so I rolled with it. There was one character moment I didn't expect that made me tear up.

The movie did a good job of checking off the boxes without feeling like a hack, although there is one box essentially unchecked I'd have liked to see.

Biggest flaw of the film- it is jam packed and moves at breakneck pace.i think that's why you're seeing people come back with better thoughts on a second viewing. I look forward to subsequent viewings myself.

Two more thoughts- the current trend of reviewers claiming it disrespects TLJ are right- from a certain point of view. From within the saga, i think it mostly compliments both its predecessors in most ways. In a meta-cinephile outside of the GFFA, it takes less risks and feels much more like TFA. So it's not, in my opinion, what the reviewers are saying.

Regarding the handling of leia- they did an amazing job with what they could. Personally i feel like i can see exactly what leia would have done in this movie if she were still with us. They replace her in those moments ably and surprisingly in some cases, but her presence is felt in the story.

First viewing yesterday... I have voted ``Good´´ but I have doubted wether voting ``I didn´t like it´´. I feel very mixed and I left the cinema disappointed. I tried to see the movie without no expectations, as long as it is possible, and I was very fond of it in the beginning, I was aware of its fast pacing and was keeping all my attention, the chemistry between Rey Poe Finn is the best in ST, and you don´t have time to get bored nor to think if what´s going on makes sense...I expect to discuss things in other spoilery threads. My advise is to not belive the critics and to not belive people that states this is the best film of history, go and see for yourself, Star Wars is very subjective.

Watched it for the first time this morning and I have to admit I left the cinema feeling very pleased however it is a somewhat strange "pleased". I'll try to explain; when i left the cinema after TLJ I was gobsmacked, moved and intrigued (it ranked as high as ESB after my first viewing) but after repeated views those feelings changed to outright ambivalence and I now think I know why. TLJ is everything TROS isn't and vice versa. Where TLJ is a far superior piece of film making it just doesn't feel Star Wars, whereas TROS embodies it at every turn but is far less successful as a piece of cinema. The pacing and tone are all over the place, the plot retreads a hell of a lot of old ground, introduces new and meaningless characters, travel round half the galaxy like some sort of video game fetch quest. But its biggest issue by far is its too short, this should have had an Endgame runtime. Even just an extra 15 - 20 minutes would have helped massively.

All that aside though, It screams STAR WARS. It has that magic that in my opinion has been lacking in the sequel trilogy. It may not be the most coherent piece of film making in history but it shines where its meant to, it crosses the T's and dot's the I's and even leaves room for a few nostalgic surprises. It is also the most well acted of the new trilogy. Daisy Ridley who I have been critical of was particularly impressive, as was John Boyega.

If your expecting Oscar fodder you will be disappointed but if all your expecting is to be entertained with a fantastically nonsensical piece of swashbuckling, fan service laced, popcorn brilliance then this is the Star wars film you've been looking for.

It may not be the greatest of the 9 but its definitely one of if not the most entertaining and...... I'll take that.

And my final word goes to the amazing send off they gave Carrie Fisher, classy and respectful.

Well, am in a cool cinema facebook group and someone created a fake account only to share a massive spoiler. It was my first post on the feed, couldn't do nothing to avoid it (well yes, not entering, Jesus lol). Ten minutes later post was erased.
    Seems to be true.
I guess it was my fault too. I wanted to disconnect five minutes from the work. Bad decision. My impatience has given a bad trick, just for 10 minutes.

I want to thank all the people on this cantina because, from what I know, you have been so respectful with threads and all has been separated correctly.

I will enjoy the movie tonight no matter what. See you in open threads tomorrow.

    Cheers all.

I really liked it. Maybe not “the greatest movie ever” liked it, but it was a very entertaining movie that tied up all the loose ends.

I can see why some people may not like how those loose ends were tied up and I get most of the criticism but I disagree. For example, I agree it was very fast paced, but it didn’t diminish the movie or make it hard to follow.

The biggest negative for me, and this is purely personal taste, is that... and I’m not sure exactly how to explain it... is that it didn’t feel as intimate as the OT. It was almost as if it was too blockbuster-y. I know that’s an odd thing to say about a franchise that basically created the blockbuster concept. I’m all also fairly certain the OT would have had a less intimate feel is technology and funding in the 70s didn’t limit what GL could do (PT as proof).

Even though that was a criticism based on my personal taste, I didn’t make the movie “bad”.

There were a couple other moments where I didn’t necessarily like the choices, but I’m they were fleeting and didn’t detract from the whole movie like some scenes did in TLJ.

Other than it was great! The action was awesome, the character interactions and relationships were deeper, the humor was more Star Wars-y (and less a bad knock off of the more slap stick Marvel style comedy), the music was incredible, and JJ did what I thought was impossible and found a way to bring all 9 movies to a close.

Oh and to the people who say TROS was a slap in the face to TLJ, I disagree. Yes there were a couple scenes that certainly poked TLJ but nothing that aggressively undermined it. JJ made no harder jabs at TLJ than TLJ did to TFA.

You could watch TFA and then TROS to be fair without having to put yourself through the TLJ.
