I also wish you would have never watched any SW movie. I get it. I wish you would have taken photos of the movies, toys, etc. that you cut to pieces, because we all feel that way. (Kind of think that didn't happen....but who am I to judge?..... It's like folks burning sports jerseys...whatever. "and it bothers me that they're still in my house." Ummm.....take them....out of the house?)

In fact, I do the same thing. When I don't like something, I go home and cut stuff up and burn sh1t. I go into complete hysterics when I don't get my way.

"Kind of kidding"...... I understand maybe this movie didn't live up to your hopes and dreams, and maybe your childhood was destroyed. Sorry about that if so. I had a pretty good childhood even though we were mostly poor....pretty good because Star Wars was a big part of it. Most of this film tickled the living pee out of me. Some of of it was 'yeah, okay.....might not make total sense, but I'll go with it."

I think the main thrust of the early reviewers was to hate it out of the gate, but all of them said 'the effects were great, the action was great, the acting was good....." so....I don't know what else was left. The story? Sure it was a bit convoluted, but I was able to follow along.

I'm not dismissing your feelings about it, but if you went home and destroyed property, well............I don't think any movie can help that. And I wish it could, really. I do.

The Star Wars is stories. Some are awesome, some are okay. Most are entertaining at least. If you are truly done with Star Wars, that's cool too. No one would fault you, but some of us really like how it turned out. And that's cool too. It's fine. It's all fine.

    :)

Here's the story of the Sequel Trilogy:

JJ screwed Lucas - RJ screwed JJ - JJ screwed RJ back and managed to screw Lucas again.

Absolutely nothing in this film or this trilogy makes a lick of sense. Every single time something is established, it's knocked over or called into question. There are no rules, the Force is some kind of shapeless magic that apparently everyone can access, the First Order is all powerful or not or something. Snoke had a plan but it was Palpatine's plan but either way it makes no sense. Rey is no one or the Chosen One or All The Jedi or part of a Dyad or the Force balancing itself out or none of the above or all of the above. Kylo is conflicted or not conflicted or sort of conflicted or all of the above. Snoke was important or not important or sort of important or all of the above. Poe is a patriot and a pilot or an ex-smuggler or something. Luke goes to an island to die or was hunting down a Sith assassin with Lando or looking for a dagger or searching for knowledge, he never heard of Rey before but knew she was a Palpatine and Leia knew and he trained Leia but she quit but still uses the Force or doesn't. No one on earth can make sense of this without nitpicking 1-6 for perceived parallel flaws or playing Dutch Boy and running to stop up the gaps with nonsensical, incoherent, contradictory ancillary fiction. To accept this everyone has to fess up that they were really stupid and wrong and 1-6 never made any sense, although they set a new standard for world building in genre films, but up is down, black is white and the sun is the moon in this terrifying new Orwellian Disney nightmare world.

A steaming dogpile of meaningless, confusing nonsense that ends because movies end. The work of a group of mean spirited ego-maniacs with little talent and no honor who are lucky not to be pumping gas for a living.

I've been watching this thread since it started with the U.K. folks being able to view it first. I was able to Thurs. night here in the U.S. and I left feeling like I had been shot out of a cannon it was so fast paced. But I still liked it. I wanted to do like others and take in a second viewing which I was able to do last night before voting. I was going to vote Good after my first viewing but I'm voting Excellent after my second viewing. I think it was like someone had mentioned before about all the emotions being built up, the crowd of opening night, all the cheering. I missed a few things that I thought I got the first go around. Yesterday the crowd was smaller, calmer. The movie itself also felt way better pace wise. Mostly I think I was able to slow my mind down and relax. It just moved at a much better pace and I frickin loved it! I'd love to mention a couple things that hit me last night that made me go, HOLY blast!!! but I can't here I guess.

I finally saw it for the third, and last time this afternoon.
It was my best experience of all watchings.
Even the pace, one of my biggest issues, seemed much better now. Probably only the begging at Mustafar it seems rushed, maybe 1 or 2 minutes more explaining a little bit more about the wayfinder would be the ideal.
Quest of Kylo for the wayfinder and his travel to Exegol is just incredible. Visually and the tune of mistery.
Master Leia and Rey's trainning in Ajan Kloss looks superb. Rey's meditation mirroring Luke on Dagobah is my favorite part.
Then we go to another desert planet in the SW universe, Pasaana. Love everything that took place there. The festival of the locals, Lando's apparition, the speeder chase, the encounter with the serpent and the healing, Rey x Kylo and Chewie's "death".
Same thing I can say about Kijimi. Loved how the First Order took control of the city. Zori Bliss was another great addition to the saga. But the best, and how well it worked as comic relif, is Babu Frik.
All the sequence in the moon of Kef Bir is just astonishing. The landscape looks like a beautiful painting, the wreckage of DS II and those big waves. So cool.to see sailor Rey defying the monster waves.
The duel in that passage is one of the best of the sequels and the entire saga, the way Kylo is winning that fight and how Rey is getting tired is very realistic and natural. Leia's interference in that fight was something amazing and the apparition of Han in Kylo's mind and occasionally his redempetion is one of my favorites moments in the film.
The end in Exegol it worked so.much better now, also. That arena, with all those sith's acolytes and The Emperor and Rey in the center waiting for the sacrifice is something very creepy and it looks great.
One thing that I noticed is that the Emperor is very different physically before stealing Rey and Ben's essence/life and later on when he is full recovered. Before he looks like a zoombie (blind eyes and the skin is not deformed). Later he looks more like the old Palpatine from ROTJ, very creepy and decadent. Why is that?
Just want to finished with the very beautiful end that almost made me cry. Rey in Tatooine with the force ghost of Luke an Leia was just perfect

Glad to feel much better now. My vision of TROS changed completely from my 1st to my 3rd rewatch.

I will keep my "excellent" on the poll.

After my first viewing, I was sort of "meh" on the movie but after seeing it again today, I've warmed up to it a lot. I still think as an overall film, it's the weakest of the trilogy, but I believe I personally enjoy this one more than TFA. I really liked it overall.

Just got back from my 8th viewing... and I'm ready to rate it 'masterpiece' over 'excellent'. It's an amazing film and I love it. The attention to detail is insanely great.

I am not going to change my vote here though, because the specific question is about the 'first watch'.

    Basically, here was my experience-

I read the spoilers on Reddit before the film. They seemed neat, but I was skeptical that they'd be the final product.

Once the film got going, I realized that the spoilers were in fact pretty accurate. So I say back, and pretty well enjoyed the film.

At the time, I even considered the possibility that it was my favorite Star Wars film. Given some distance, I'd say it's not quite there, but it's still likely top 3. I understand the problems some people have with it, but to me it was fun, and still managed to handle the mythological/moral aspects of Star Wars in a way I found satisfying.

So I'm pretty pleased with TROS, and I'm sorry for those who didn't get to see a new Star Wars film they loved this winter.

Awful film for me. I waited two days after seeing it and saw it again with a casual fan on a date, it didn't improve on the second viewing and my date thought it was a total train wreck.

There's a superb summary on the film from HelloGreedo...

And this video argues TROS is JJ's worst habits all combined and concentrated, it articulates perfectly my issues with the film:

Do NOT click either video if you loved the film and do not like dissonant opinion. These are very knowledgeable Star Wars fans articulating with distinct intelligence why they did NOT like TROS. If you love JJ the second video is going to really tick you off as it deconstructs his style/tricks extremely effectively.

Remember: There is no right way to react to TROS. Subjective appreciation of art has been with us since the first cave drawing.

And full confession, my own taste in Star Wars is weird, for example Episode III is my LEAST favorite of the SW films, while ROTJ remains one of my favorites (it was Carrie's favorite of them all too). So I'm not your cookie-cutter SW fan, despite being in love with the franchise all the way back to 1977 at 11-years of age.

I think you've summed up exactly how I felt.

A number of things disappointed me, but I'll list the main ones:

Huge Kylo/Ben fan. So his fate broke my heart.
I was terribly disappointed at Rey. I really liked her in the first two films, but I ended up absolutely despising her by the time we reached the end.
Huge TLJ fan. This film spent most of its time retconning it.
And finally.....it has forever tainted the entire saga. I honestly wonder if I'll ever be able to watch them again.

Oh, and it was terribly made. No plot, awful dialogue, silly plot twists. I'm glad for those who enjoyed it, but I'm now officially an ex Star Wars fan.

Every film has something for someone. But sadly, TROS didn’t have much for me. I liked a few scenes and what not. I liked that Rey vs Kylo duel on the remains of the death start over water. Sorry, I can’t remember the name of that planet haha. To be fair I wasn’t that big on Palpatine returning. I think his death in ROTJ was just too important to the storyline of Star Wars. I do like Rey’s golden saber blade. Thats really cool. But, yeah, the film just wasn’t my cup of tea but it may be yours :)

Ps: I did really love that part where all the Jedi spoke to Rey while she was nearly subdued. Of course that came to show that she was all the Jedi. I think this was a great scene in my opinion.

It's a great moment. I loved it when the camera flew out in space and the piano version of Rey's theme kicks in. The movie is not my favorite episode in any way, but the confrontation with Palpatine was pretty well-executed in my opinion. I actually liked that the jedi were only presented as voices, and not ghosts in scene.

It wasn’t that bad. The humor improved, Oscar Isaac and Keri Russell were pretty good. Sometimes the characters did stupid things, and the plot wasn’t that great, but it wasn’t bad. Its main problems are just contradicting other movies. I didn’t like the ending, because having Rey as a nobody was a cool idea. Any other problems I have are just little nitpicks, like the hyperspace skipping scene. And with the hyperspace skipping, interdictor cruisers are rendered useless. Finally, it feels like they are flipping me off by using a legends story basically, but one of the worst ones.
WHYYYYYYYyYyYyYyYyy DO YOU HURT ME SO!

For me it was like a victory dance and I enjoyed that so much. I was laughing and laughing so much. You see for me part of the journey has been being involved with the community and I have made many friends. Many have come, many have gone and I miss them. TROS felt far more like a continuation of TFA and that should of been correct. TLJ petrubs out its swollen, its out of sequence. Folks and spoilers gurus were pivoting on tangents which lost focus of the narrative. Folks erasing characters out of their own story. Reddit was always toxic unfortunately it spilled out across the whole of social media. The pure arrogance of these folks made them look like clowns in my mind. Throwing toys out of the pram because the story did not go the way they thought. I lost friends who I will never see again, became incredibly depressed broke up with my partner lost my cat and job. Star Wars got me through a lot of this blast and still does until this very day in the middle of this deadly pandemic. So thank you guys and everyone involved here and elsewhere.

The story I enjoyed even though it was not what I wanted. Sure it wasn't the greatest film but I loved Rey's story, I wished we had more of Finn tbh. Also, wished they focused more on the heros in the trilogy than they did. I wanted more old time Luke, I thought we would get more master and apprentice between her and Luke. Leia I understand what they were doing with her but it didn't quite work. I love the little scene of Leia training with Luke. That's what I always wanted after RotJ. Even for such a small scene I loved that. Folks wanted force ghosts to appear alongside Rey, when they were telling Rey to rise in the force. I don't think that would have worked. Why? Well it would look great in a cartoon, in actual film? Nah wouldn't of worked, JJ got that right. 'Ben' going down the whole was hilarious. I laughed when he died too. I really loved seeing Rey in an x-wing, I always wanted that. I wish we had more action figures with her piloting and I would also love her yellow lightsaber.

Main crux I didn't like was the Palpatine angle. Again I understand the route and am glad they went in that direction to ensure Rey was central to the plot but I wish her anchoring of the film was different. That Kiss was eye rolling and out of nowhere but cheered up when he went bye-bye. Rey was a true hero in this film and I enjoyed her and Daisy's performance.

Am a very happy bunny. :):):):):):):):):):)

My feelings now for TROS is that the movie seems like a stand alone project. It works fine as one movie and it is pretty good, but as a part of the trilogy it feels off.
TFA-TLJ was a perfect combination and I feel that at the end of TLJ the story was told and finished.
At least now is how I sense that, but that probably will change as the time pass.
I have also.the same feeling with the prequels. TPM for me is something unique and it seems like a stand alone movie.
