Any thoughts on how Carrie Fisher will get her 'sendoff' for this film? In virtually every interview I hear RJ and the cast talk about how this film will be such a fitting swansong for her.

I'd like to see something like this. The Falcon flying around on Crait ends up being the very near end of the movie. Chewie is flying and Luke is in the gunner seat, maybe you know he is on board, maybe you don't. The Falcon lands to pickup/evacuate/save Leia. When the ship lands, the hatch opens. She expects to see Chewie and is maybe looking away. Luke steps down and says 'It's Luke, I'm here to rescue you'. Some callback line to that very first meeting. Big hugs and John Williams, they get on board and escape, credits roll.

I wasn't sure what send off I wanted. I know some advocated for the character demise to occur inbetween episodes. I think I kind of wanted an in-movie send off where we honor the passing of her character. If it's not a last second sacrifice that saves the Resistance then something else heroic and then have a ceremony for her similar to the redeemed Anakin. And even though she wasn't trained as a Jedi, I'd like to see a force ghost of her appearing briefly to Luke and then disappearing with the force ghost of Anakin. Then they'd have to have an upbeat moment to end the movie, otherwise everyone would leave the movie in tears.

I can picture IX starting off in this manner.

Maybe they'll add never before seen footage of her final day on set in the dvd/blu-ray package. I can see ''For Carrie'' at the end of the credits.

Agreed, Empire ends with the 'happy' shot of Luke getting a new hand and the remaining heroes looking out across the GFFA in a similar manner. As for TLJ, I have this funny feeling that there won't be a gap between VIII and IX again- sure, VIII might span quite a length of time with Rey's training, but I reckon that the overall story is sufficiently fast-paced and character-driven that it will have to pick up again immediately after TLJ finishes. Pure speculation of course...

Think you may be correct. She'll be 'onboard' a ship that's attacked and destroyed or something

Yeah with Empire though we at least suspected that Han would somehow be saved later on. Even with Han gone, we can still Harrison Ford in other projects, so we lost the character but we still have the opposite side of the coin. With Carrie, we know Leia's gone. We won't get to see her on screen ever again, so whenever they do the tribute (and I do think it should be in TLJ... I don't want to wait 2 years to see a tribute and pay homage to Leia/Carrie) it is going to be monumentally sad. They have to end upbeat somehow. We can't leave the theater getting "mule kicked" in the chest with seeing Carrie Fisher's last performance and not having something to smile about.

Imagine this playing during Leia's last scene ever... there won't be a dry eye in the house

It's possible that they'd do it this way, but I wouldn't want to wait until 2019 to give Carrie and Leia their tribute. I think it's better to do it in this movie.

Yes, seeing as Carrie's role was apparently 'unchanged' by her passing, though it pains me to say it, I really hope that Leia dies in TLJ. Not only would this result in the least impact on the overall story arc, but also should allow the character a much more dignified, less shoe-horned ending- Leia is a fantastic character, it would be a shame if the closure of her legacy were to be rushed.

I was actually 'hoping' that this is the road they would take as well, but after Carrie passed KK and some others at Lucasfilm stated that she was to have a much more prominent role in IX. Unless she was going to be a force ghost you can deduce she survives TLJ. While I'd like to see some closure in that manner for Leia in TLJ, I don't think it will happen.

I'm with you that I wouldn't want to wait another 2 years to see some sort of funeral or tribute, but, there is always the opening crawl of IX to do something along that line. I wouldn't be the least surprised or disappointed if IX's crawl starts with 'General Leia Organa, leader of the resistance, has died. The resistance is in chaos....' Then maybe start the movie after some sort of funeral has already taken place, discussing how to carry on the fight without her. Then you wouldn't be reopening sad memories from years past, but instead finding a way forward.

After hearing for weeks how fitting her sendoff swansong is this movie from virtually everyone involved, I expect a few sad faces end of film.

Yes indeed this should be done. In fact, I'd rather see it at the start of the film, just before the Lucasfilm logo fades in and out.
