    She was too fat.
It's not about beauty, it's about health.

If someone told me to lose 35 pounds for 6 weeks worth of work and get paid a million dollars, count me in.

Is she wants the cash yes. However, her mom is Debbie Reynolds I am sure the family has money still. She is heavy again in the latest interview so she will have to do it all over again for VIII

I hate it when the media tries to portray women who have to get in shape for a role as 'victims', but men are not. Hamill had to do the exact thing as Fisher, but where are the articles about him? Obviously some standards in Hollywood are ridiculous. But a general fitness requirement is a good thing. It's not about discriminating against those who are a bit more out of shape, it's about looking good and being able to properly fufill the role as it is intended.

Let's put being political aside, this movie would be a hell of a lot less fun if Rey was 250 pounds, Luke, Han, and Leia were all ancient and out of shape looking, and all the main cast that is supposed to be either looked upon or feared could barely swing a lightsaber without getting exhausted. Where's the suspense if you need a lifter to get into a tie fighter? If you thought an army of troopers that couldn't aim was inefficient, imagine one that couldn't aim, walk, run, or stand up long enough to chase our heroes. I could go on and on...

Point is, general health requirements are a good thing, both for the proper look and feel of a character, but an obsessive, unreasonable and unhealthy focus on appearance is not. But even if you signed up to be in a role that required the latter, you wouldn't be a victim of anything other than your own choosing.

I am very sure they were totally concerned over her health.

The thing is: the older you get, the more difficult it is to maintain a low weight. Our bodies are simply not made for it.

You can be fit without being slim, no problem, so just don't make this about health.
    It isn't

And I say that as someone who regularly swims a mile just for shits and giggles and walks 3 because she likes a nice little walk home from work. (and who still counts as slightly overweight)

It's worse for women and much worse for women in menopause.
Now add the fact that Carrie Fisher has to take medication and losing weight for her probably consists of eating a leave of salad a day.

How that is supposed to be healthy is beyond me, but whatevs.

It's the business. It's our society.
It's sucks, but hey, we throw our money at them anyways

There are articles about Fisher because she is willing to talk about it. She's honest and not afraid to say something that might piss some people off. When Hamill makes comments about how he was degraded by producers due to his weight or comments about the struggles he went through to fit a certain body image, there will be articles bout that as well.

Yes, I have to disagree with Carrie. This is part of the job. Sometimes the company can drive consumer tastes, but most often they simply respond to them. It's like I said in another thread about Daisy being perceived as "eye candy". That's the way it is in the movie biz. It's a job qualification for a leading role in a science FICTION and FANTASY movie. We want people with the "right stuff". And if you've ever seen former astronauts, it's pretty striking how awesome they still look because they are disciplined and in shape. Many of them could pass for someone years, if not decades, younger.

Honestly, I'm just glad they agreed to have Mark and Carrie reprise their roles at all, because normal aging is another Hollywood no-no. Some people age exceptionally well in the conventional sense, like Meryl Streep or Mark Harmon, but most actors don't, no matter how much money they throw at it.

They've cast a very diverse group in other ways, so maybe this movie will drive consumer tastes a little. It's a slow process. But I do think the weight issue will not change much, not for an action/adventure type of movie.

Yes, if you want the job and the cash you must portray the part. If it asks for a fat guy in clown suit and you want to act that part, to get the job you must portray that.

It's acting, you are acting as the part that is written, it is not about being PC and stuff. No one makes you take a part in a film.

Changing your body shape for a role is nothing new, nor is it out of the norm. Ask Chris Hemsworth about getting in shape for Thor, or Chris Evans, or Hugh Jackman, or Anne Hatheway, or Christian Bale, or Tom Hanks, or Will Smith, or Michael B. Jordan. Sometimes a role requires a certain body shape to make it work.

When celebs have a paid trainer and nutritionist who gives them the best supplements and vitamins money can buy, all they really have to do is show up and put in some effort. If I was one of them, once I got into rock star shape for a role, I would also try to maintain it.

Doesn't mean she has to shut her mouth about it. Carrie is a writer. She is talking her about how the industry makes her feel. She isn't demanding compensation or a fundamental change of the system. She's just critiquing the ridiculousness of the unrealistic image that Hollywood perpetuates. Which becomes more and more out of touch with reality every year. (Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher in their prime would never lead a movie by today's standards of fitness and beauty) People who critique a flawed system cause change over time. I don't think there is any danger of comments like this destroying the illusion of pretty people that Hollywood creates. But it might bring awareness to some that what is projected on screen is not reality, and maybe eventually swing that pendulum back to a more realistic image of beauty (while still being beautiful) that Hollywood had in its past.

I don't see why anyone would say Carrie isn't right to speak her mind her. Its her right to say what she feels. That's what makes Carrie great.

Absolutely. She has every right to speak her mind, that's how things are changed. Look at the recent nudies of Amy Schumer. She's brave for doing that. I don't begrudge Carrie her outspokenness one bit. I just disagree with her, that's all. Maybe I won't in the future. That's the good thing about people having the ability to speak their mind without someone calling them names. That's how things change, or maybe don't change, depending on the consensus. There has to be free trade in the marketplace of ideas. As long as people are civil, as far as I'm concerned, they can say anything they want.

This is Carrie Fisher playing an mature statewoman and military commander. Not a young kickass hero that needs to go toe to toe and hand to hand with Darth Vader.

Of course, getting in shape to play an action hero is one thing, but practically playing a woman past the middle of her life.... there is somethign to be said about that.

And hey, if nobody talks about it, nobody will ever thinks about it.

She clearly states that this is the industry and this is the way things are, if you want the job, you need to be thin, but she doesn't have to say, she likes it.

I see your point, but nobody is asking her to put on the bikini again. The fact is she and Mark Hamill have let themselves gain a little too much weight. Nobody wants to see our Princess and Jedi heroes look unhealthy. Nobody is expecting superhero sixpack abs, just a little thinner.

a big thing about weight loss and not smoking etc is that it directly improves your ability to perform in acting.

I agree with everything you said but I think a jedi is supposed to keep in shape, seems like part of their way of life, and I'm pretty sure Leia is going to be one ;).
