You can not say for certain that Krennic is based on Cronal, it is still just speculation at this point. I find it hard to believe that Krennic will be force sensitive as not only does nothing suggest that he is but every information that has come out regarding Rogue One so far has been that it will be a more gritty film based on war and not the force. To say that it is "confirmed" is quite a bold statement.

Please note I am talking all the time about template, an idea, or Framework if you like. The idea is Cronal in general. They are introducing powerfull character, and 3rd in command in the Empire. The author is Pablo Hidalgo, certainly he would be glad to offer his character as a main idea behind the plot, and this rises possibility further. Of course they will make attempts to mask it here and there.

Krennic is assigned for intelligence, he should be Force sensitive .In almost all former Expanded Universe novels the chief of Imperial Intelligence was some Palpatines adept, Force sensitive person, a prophet of the Dark side. It is natural, it make possible for things to be seen further and mor clear, a very usefull trait for chief of intelligence. That gives him great power.

He is not ordinary Imperial commander, he goes stright into the action, and I am guessing he does this for inquiry , he wants (just like Kylo Ren in ep VII) to investigate on terrain.

    What if( just speculating):

    Palpatine: Have you seen it?
Krennic(First prophet/director of intelligence): Yes Emperor
Palpatine: They will try to destroy it.
    Krennic: Yes, they will strike.
    Palpatine: Can it be prevented?
Krennic: No, but this will lead us to their secret base, we will be able to strike , I have foreseen this.
Palpatine: Good, good, see this to be done.

In a Mission, he actually walks like a prophet.

Whoa. This Cronal guy is exactly what I have imagined Snoke to be. Now I am wishing I'd kept up with the legacy EU.

    Snoke is Cronal confirmed.

I found your initial post about Cronal to be very well put together, however this is really stretching it my friend.

Here is the deal. They are introducing powerfull comander Director of Imperial Inteligence. He is no Tarkin. He must die or presumed to be dead by the end of Rogue one since just around the corner there is Ep. IV where there is no mention of him and the search for blueprints contunues without him!.Yes the Galaxy is big but this is story about Death Star, and in New Hope is no mention of Krennic.
My tinfoil says he is A.some random character put in a rank of 3rd in command of Empire for one film never to be mentioned ever and no bothering he was not mentioned ever after in films, B. Very important person, not mentioned since presumed dead,In the Aftermath he returns as the Unindentified Admiral, the Operator....leading to creation of the First Order.

Yeah I think that I could see this guy eventually become Snoke which would make sense of Hidalgo's words on Twitter that Snoke Snoke will not be in R1...

As has already been mentioned by other posters here, Pablo shot down any chance of Snoke being in Rogue One on Twitter. As far as this character goes, who I'm assuming is going to be the Director of Imperial Intelligence, it makes sense that if he is the one in charge when the Death Star plans are stolen, its very likely that he will not survive this film. In a case such as that, his death could just as easily come from his superiors as it could from the Rebels.

Assuming he does survive though, who's to say that he still holds the same rank. Additionally, the Empire is a HUGE organization with many important higher ups spread throughout, the fact that they aren't mentioned or shown in the OT doesn't mean they aren't still doing their thing elsewhere in the galaxy. As a matter of fact, in the comics it has been shown that General Tagge survived the destruction of the Death Star as he was not on it during the Rebel attack. The movies don't acknowledge this, but it doesn't make it any less plausible.

I think it is an interesting theory however, I do believe the leaked article says he is the Director of the Military. I interpret this as he would likely fill the bill of being 3rd in command. It would be the highest rank in the military. It could be plausible that Tarkin is just below him, and it he dies in RO, then that could put Tarkin in the place we saw him in the OT. Or as @Admiral Petty said, he may have been stationed elsewhere in galaxy, maybe after he failed to retrieve the plans which required Vader to come in. Based upon the article, I don't see anything to lead to him being force sensitive at the moment. Any guess at that would be speculative.

    I agree.

Krennic would be like Imperial military Cheaf of Staff. Though since he commands black commando troops in most delicate counter- intelligence operation he is obviously also in charge of Intelligence and security.

In any way a new highest rank in Imperial Military and Imperial security character of utmost importance is installed..

    Strange question arises than:

He seem to inevitably dies as he is no mentioned or referenced ever after in Star Wars films though been very important, we know chasing rebels who stoled bluperints was later conducted by Darth Vader (ep IV.).

Pablo said...galaxy is big place...well yes but Krennic is forever tied now for the particular case of Death Star. Where is Krennic after R1?

And if he don't dies in R1 , where is his place after?

My reduction metod shows that he.... apparently dies but ..comes back... this seems to me only logical reason to install this powerfull figure.

    The Operator ?

At the first sight this statament looked to me like overkill.

Instead of just saying Snoke is not in R1, he said like Snoke is no any way, dont even think its possible Snoke is R1 its , not even possible he is not there in any way or shape or form,... dont be ridiculous even to think about it...

,this time he was nice to spare us from futile debate about R1 and Snoke. How nice of him..

However this smells to me like damage control statement, desire to cut any debate here and now.

BESIDES? Who was asking about Snoke's ways of becaming what he is, Snokes shapes, or forms?
So Snoke has complex history of some transition in his shape or form in the process of becoming what he is now ?

I think elements of Cronal may well have been recycled into the character of Snoke. However I think it is highly unlikely that Krennick will be Snoke. Firstly there is nothing to suggest that he is force sensitive and I think I would prefer it if he wasn't. Considering it is a war film that numerous times has been stated to not be about the force and lightsabers but a stand alone film. I think the Krennick character would be more interesting if he were simply a high ranking military official in opposition to the heroes in Rogue one, with no connections to the dark side. Don't get me wrong I do believe elements of Cronal will be incorporated into Snoke I just find it very hard to believe that Krennick will become Snoke as there is very little evidence to suggest this and a considerable amount to suggest that he can not be. I think it would also be beneficial to the story if Krennick was simply Krennick.

Just, somehow, I have a feeling , or say a vision, that the event of stealing blueprints of the Death Star, and all its consequences for the Empire (it was begining of the fall of Empire) should have been predicted or at least suspected by Palpatine, and his Dark side prophets.
It will be a sacrilege for Disney to allow rebels to steal Blueprints and hurt so critically the Empire, without mighty Emperor sensing something. If he sensed it, he send his best men... We already know there is scene of Palpatine, and another Dark side weilder , so there is certainly some involvement of remote viewing by dark side ....its already clear R1 will not be just 100% war film.

We already know (thanks to Bloodline novel) that Kylo Ren mutinied against Luke and pledged his allegiance to Snoke around his age of 23.
He was shocked by the fact he is a grandson of Darth Vader, and he was never told this before!

We know Luke has trained Ben in at least basic arts of Jedi skill before he mutinied.

From the time he mutinied we can conclude that Kylo has not advanced much in Light saber duels for instance, hardy he received training from Snoke in this field..

However , we can be sure Snoke already trained Kylo Ren in one particular skill, which he uses on an expert level. We can argue we never sough on screen a Force weilder in any Star Wars film so far using Force with such effect for something particular....

It is a skill of using Force for reading minds, in other words, utilising Force for Intelligence work!

Snoke is thus, amongst orders an expert in inteligence work by using Dark side....

..and of course we should use this observation for our further elaborate of who Snoke was...

Once again, that's a huge stretch, but let it not be said that you aren't dedicated to an idea once you latch onto it.

Yeah Kylo seems pretty well trained to me but all of what @McDiarmid said is pure speculation, I agree, but we have no idea how often Snoke trains Kylo, what his true intentions are, but it could be him collecting a lot of data to make sure he keeps his rule or something like that.

It is however almost safe to say that Snoke is not a phisically strong force weilder. He dwells deep into the Dark Side using it for..wisdom (defined by Kylo Ren words), and for remote sensing (intelligence) again defined by skills Kylo has, and its natural to conclude Kylo received that teachings from Snoke ( I bet it is not Luke who trained Kylo to interrogate people all around).

Deep immersion with the Dark side to obtain wisdom , predicting of events in advance, and intelligence gathering.

In my eyes like someone is making a painting of a former Dark side prophet and intelligence agent in one person.

Disney has taken action to remove leaked information about Rogue One as much as possible.
But why? Its only a few pictures, of which almost everything is not new or revealing

    except-

Cron.., sory Krennic and his black troopers.

Its is predominant opinion Snoke is an Alien, like a member of distinct Alien race.

However there is no any strict notion he is Alien. In the TFA novel its says he looks humanoid but not human. Which can also apply to any haevily deformed individual, we should just remember Palpatine's transformation.

The second and only left argument he must be an Alien is a Computed Generated Imagery (CGI) . The argument is CGI was used because Snoke is so Alien-ish that it can't be acted by human, so he must be an Alien.

Well to that I have a question, this:

In the Lord of the Rings we know Gollum was once a hobbit, that he was consumed by evil of the ring and transformed into Gollum.

They used CGI to make Gollum.

Is Gollum a hobbit or a new being, new species, Alien?

Thinking about Snoke and what is missing about him, my inclination is that he is a Jedi. By the looks of him I would say that he is a survivor of order 66. Snoke is a Jedi that was thought to be killed and was in hiding until the Empire crumbled. He was horribly wounded in the attempt on his life but survived, that would explain his wounds. At least one other Jedi escaped the Purge. I think that his surviving Order 66 would also explain why the clones were done away with, too easy to manipulate/program. He is not a Sith which is why he does not use the title Darth or Lord. Obi Wan changed the beacon in the Jedi Temple to warn surviving Jedi not to come back to the temple, which spared him from the fate of the other Jedi.

There is actually a "sub-version" of this concept in which this Dark side Prophet and director of Imperial intelligenece was one of the Jedi that wasn't killed in great purge( order 66) because he turned to the Dark side.
