I think that's a fair point, but the writers want to see it from the ground-up. We've seen our heroes starting and reaching and living among the stars, but never have we seen gritty Star Wars, brawling and straight out warfare and espionage. Just always hinted. It'll be refreshing and exciting, even if it won't be the Star Wars we know. Plus, no lightsabers and force powers will even the scales :D

You may be thinking of an old post I made about what I think these engines/machines are. Back when I made that post, I had come to the conclusion that these engines did not match any of the line drawings or cross section diagrams of podracer engines that I have. Like you, I think that they are probably used as improvised generators.

This linked post is an educated guess on my part, and I do stress guess, as this is purely my own speculation with no confirmation-

He also appears to be holding a staff of some sort, which I suppose could be used as a walking sticking his character is indeed blind.

You'd think They'd have some kind of technology in the Star Wars universe to aid the blind. But not knowing the backstory for this character, it's possible he did not have access or could not afford this technology,

Plus it will just make him more badass. He is a martial arts actor so expect to see him kick some up close and personal ass. And as far as the dar aesthetic, they did say this would be like the tone of saving private ryan set in star wars

I like this photo a lot! The costuming looks really good, and I'm digging the tone this suggests for the completed film.

*Sigh* Depending on how things go, I may have to add Jones' character to my list of SW crushes.

Anyway, if I had to choose R1 or the Han movie... I'd choose this. Now that we have an official photo and cast, I'm even more excited!

The episodic saga yes, but this films exist to explore other cinema styles. This is presented as Saving Ryan's Privates meets Star Wars. I am particularly happy about it. Star Wars is a huge universe.

Fantastic. I love the picture. The dark, brooding, kind of desaturated and dirty/grimey look is very cool. This definitely gives you the vibe of a "lived-in" universe that the original trilogy presented us, while also giving off the vibe of "The Dark Times". The oppression of The Empire is felt everywhere. This crew looks weary, battle-hardened, and focused. I love it.

Felicity Jones is going to be great. Loved her in The Theory of Everything. She's absolutely beautiful, and I love her giant teeth :)

It seems like Diego Luna has been cast in the role that Aaron Paul was up for. I was hoping we'd get to see Pinkman in Star Wars, but maybe Luna is a fit. He definitely seems a tad more rugged.

DONNIE YEN!! IP MAN!!!! IN STAR WARS!!!!!!!! This is undoubtedly my favorite thing that the Disney era Lucasfilm team has given us, other than Old Ben-esque Luke. Donnie Yen is an absolute LEGEND in Hong Kong. A little bit over a year ago, I read that Yen was transitioning to Hollywood, in the hopes of landing a big role, and becoming a star in America. No better place for him to do that than in a Star Wars film. He will be seen by more eyeballs than he's ever been seen by, before. IP MAN! Simply amazing. If you're a fan of Kung-Fu films or action films, then both Ip Man & Ip Man 2 are required viewing. Donnie Yen is one of the very best martial artists I've ever seen, on screen. I'd rank him much higher than Jet Li or Jackie Chan. I'd be willing to put him right below Bruce Lee. He's an icon, a legend, highly revered.

My ONLY disappointment with his casting, is that he won't be playing a Jedi. But looking closely at this picture, it seems that Donnie Yen's character is blind. Maybe Donnie isn't a classically trained Jedi, but he is indeed strong with The Force??? There's a long history in Kung Fu cinema of having "The Blind Master", a character that cannot see with his own eyes, but through his other senses and mastery of martial arts, can "see". I'm assuming that Yen is Force-Sensitive, and that allows him to "see", while showing off some of those downright legendary martial arts skills. I really hope they give his character a chance to shine. Behind Forest Whitaker, Yen is easily the most recognizable face, even if Felicity Jones is an Oscar-darling and Diego Luna is a hot commodity right now. They aren't legends. Donnie Yen is a legend, as is Forest Whitaker.

A few weeks ago, we read reports that Donnie Yen had been cast as a Jedi in Episode 8, so I assumed that was Luke's "most cherished" student, and that Luke would call upon him to "aide" our heroes in the next saga film. It seems as though those reports were partially wrong, as we find out Yen is in Star Wars, but in Rogue One, and not as a Jedi. I also remember Gareth Edwards saying that there were no Jedi in this movie, and something along the lines of it being about ordinary people who have to rise up in the absence of "the Gods". It will be a severe disappointment to me if Donnie Yen is in a Star Wars movie and isn't even Force-Sensitive. I can deal with him not being a full-fledged Jedi, but it would be a shame if he's not even Force-Sensitive.

I think it would've been cool if they made him a bit like Kanan's character in Rebels, where he's a Order 66/Jedi Purge Survivor turned Smuggler, who helps in the early days of the rebellion. And now considering that he's seemingly blind, maybe a bit of General Rahm Kota from The Force Unleashed video game would be in order. I'm desperately hoping Donnie Yen's character is a Force-Sensitive survivor of Order 66, maybe as a Jedi Padawan that is proficient in Teras Kasi (The Star Wars form of hand-to-hand combat). Considering The Force Awakens has those guys from The Raid, and how great they are, it would only be right to have Donnie Yen display his martial arts skills in Rogue One. To be honest, Donnie Yen is much more spectacular as a martial artist than any of those guys from The Raid, even as good as they are. I fully expect for Donnie Yen to steal every scene he's in. This is his one MAJOR chance to become a cinematic legend in the West, he's already top brass in the East. And from what I remember, Donnie's english is pretty good, so dialogue shouldn't be much of a problem.

I'm excited to see what role Forest Whitaker has. I expect he'll be some kind of Rebel Alliance General. He's got the chops to play whatever character they give him, but he's usually best in roles of authority or as a stern mentor. He stole the show in "Southpaw" as the conflicted cornerman of Jake Gylenhaal's Boxing flick. Happy to see Forest in a blockbuster role. He has a lot of less than stellar films in his catalog, but he himself ALWAYS delivers, on screen.

Ben Mendelsohn is a great choice, if he's working for The Empire. He is the quintessential man that you love to hate. He usually plays eccentric villains, sometimes bordering on homosexual innuendo, as he did this in both Exodus: Gods & Kings and The Dark Knight Rises. But honestly, the guy is great at what he does. I expect him to be the most "hated" Star Wars character (in a good way) in a long, long time.

Riz Ahmed is a good up and coming actor, as well. I got to know him from The Nightcrawler, where he shared the screen with Jake Gylenhaal. He was very good in a supporting role. I suspect much of the same from him here.

Alan Tudyk is the wild-card here. I saw his name in the casting list mentioned. I first saw him on screen about 15 years ago in the Heath Ledger vehicle, A Knights Tale. Tudyk has excellent comedic timing. I wonder if Frank Oz recommended him to the people at Lucasfilm? He was in the Frank Oz directed "Death At a Funeral". No, not the terrible Chris Rock version. I'm talking about the 2007 British version. Tudyk simply stole the show. Also, he has a ton of connections to Disney/Pixar, that might be why he's in this film, and not because of Frank Oz. He's done a ton of voicing roles, and I remember him most recently as a racist baseball player in 42, the story of Jackie Robinson. Considering the role might be a CGI character, maybe they picked him because of his voice work. We'll see.

All in all, Star Wars: Rogue One continues the seemingly eternal tradition of GREAT ensemble casts. A great mix of screen legends (Forest Whitaker, Donnie Yen), an Oscar Darling (Felicity Jones), a Hollywood favorite (Diego Luna), and relatively unknown up & comers (Riz Ahmed, Sam Claflin), and veteran character actors (Ben Mendelsohn, Alan Tudyk).

I have faith in Gareth Edwards as a director. I'm just hoping that Gary Whitta & Chris Weitz & whoever got a crack at the screenplay wrote a compelling story. I felt like the problem with Godzilla was the writing, which Gareth didn't have much to do with. Hell, Edwards made Monsters WITHOUT A SCRIPT. He's a very creative and innovative director, who has a vast background in visual/CGI effects. Truly, Edwards is the perfect pick to direct a Star Wars film, as he seems to have a great eye for filmmaking and storytelling. He's surrounded by a lot of talent behind the scenes and in front of the camera. He's got a MUCH better cast than he did in Godzilla (He had Bryan Cranston & Ken Watanabe, but look at the rest of that cast list. It's pretty awful outside those 2)

My only real question is will DARTH VADER make an appearance? I personally think he should be on the tail of this Rebel crew, and he should be the one that kills every single of them, but they are able to get the Death Star plans to Leia, before he does. I'd like it if this film ended exactly where A New Hope began, with him laying waste to these Rebels, and on a hot pursuit with the Tantive IV. It'd even be cool if they ended the film with the camera following Vader and his Stormtroopers as they are walking aboard the Tantive IV. As the Stormtroopers blast through the door and Vader walks through, cut to black, roll credits. It would be a perfect tie-in to A New Hope and would give that opening scene a hell of a lot more depth/meaning.

I sure did. I mentioned him in my above novel. Hoping that Donnie is a Former Jedi turned Smuggler. Maybe he denounces the dogma of the fraternal Jedi Order, but still lives his life according to his own, revised "Code" of The Jedi. Obviously, it's kind of difficult to go around boasting that you're a Jedi in a Post-Order 66 Society. But that doesn't mean he's abandoned the ideals of the Jedi, or even turned into a haphazard drunkard like Kota did. But I think they could definitely take a few characteristics of General Kota and the basic foundation upon which Kanan's character is structured.

I could definitely see Yen's character being the Kanan to Felicity Jones' Hera. It makes a whole lot of sense, actually. You don't need a traditional Jedi character. This would be a great opportunity to re-define what it means to be a Jedi. He gets rid of the uniform and the lightsaber, but still upholds the "Guardians of Peace and Justice" mantra, and can tap into The Force to "see". And in place of a traditional lightsaber, he can use "Teras Kasi" as his preferred method of combat, and that "staff/walking stick" as a weapon, if need be. He has all the potential to be one of the most interesting characters we've ever seen on screen. Considering Gary Whitta was the writer on this film for the majority of its development, I could absolutely see him putting his idea of a Jedi in The Dark Times into this film. It's a wasted opportunity to have Donnie Yen, otherwise. That's just my opinion. He will be a fan-favorite character just because of his martial arts skills, so why not give him some serious depth to go along with it?

Remember, people loved Darth Maul not just because of his look, but because of his martial arts skills, and his double-bladed lightsaber. Yen could, in essence, give us the light-side version of Maul. Instead of a lightsaber, give him a stick, and let him do his thing. Going by my ideas for the character off first glance, he doesn't need a whole bunch of dialogue, anyway. Give him the Charles Bronson archetype!

OK, so this might be crazy, but I'm getting a strange feeling that Diego Luna is Biggs Darklighter. It's closer enough of a look, and if you know me, you know I'm a huge Biggs guy! Wishful thinking, I know, but still!

Doesn't really look or feel like Star Wars to me. Looks more like Firefly or Aliens v Predator or something. But it does also have an expanded universe vibe about it, which I suppose a standalone movie kind of is in a way... so I suppose it's not a bad thing... :)

I'm really up for this movie and I love the Idea of opening TGFFA up as a cinematic sandbox. But I look at that cast photo and I can't help but think:

I was just looking at your post and something caught my eye.. Is that Lobot to the right if that engine? There's a character behind and to the right of the guy standing with a riffle that looks lie the silhouette of Lobot, Bald head with cybernetics, blue and white shirt.

...and underneath what looks like a Rebel pilot's cold weather flight suit. In general it looks rather like a cold than warm place where the cast of Rogue One has set up its depot.

I love it when people say this looks like Firefly ... because to me, Firefly looks like the parts of Star Wars where one would find Han Solo and other assorted scoundrels.
