Greetings, all. Something that seems to be dividing reviewers of Rogue One, to some degree, is the issue of roles/cameos carried over from A New Hope (Tarkin/Leia) and whether the CGI method used to make them actually works. So I have a poll here that I'm hoping will give an idea of what the general opinion is.

    Have fun. Discuss. :)

It's a step in the right direction. You can't get to perfection from scratch - you gotta start somewhere. Whilst Tarkin's CGI felt noticeable at a few key frames in 3D, I have a feeling that he'll look more natural in regular blu-ray once depth perception is removed from the equation. Ultimately, it did not bother me and if anything, it excites me about the prospect of seeing where this kind of technology might take us. It would make things like visual continuity in vast film universes like Star Wars an easy thing to accomplish.

    Agreed.
If you think about it, you can obviously see flaws. But overall, it didn't remove any of my enjoyment of the movie - but having Tarkin and Leia show up certainly increased it. So all in all, I think this was greatly used, and if needed to make a story coherent, I'd be happy to see it done again.

And Tarkin's appearence makes perfect sense in terms of the storytelling. The perfect continuation for Catalyst!

Uhm this isn't a new technology, they try this since The Crow. It is just not that simple it is one of the most complex tasks you can put a VFX team into. This could be a problem for the next decade.

That's exactly why I said it was a step in the right direction. Tarkin and Leia in Rogue One felt like an improvement over what we've seen in the previous iterations of this technology. I understand that they've had more time to work on it than the other films, but it's still an impressive feat that the VFX team deserves full recognition for.

It didn't bothered me at all. It looked great. Of course you can notice the CGI, but I really think R1 showed the best looking digital person ever. For me, it was Peter Cushing as Tarkin.

The technology still isn't perfect but boy, I'm excited about the further progress of this technology.

They got it to 99% for me. If i hadn't known all the ins and outs (like if I'd lived in a bubble about when these movies were made, who among the actors are alive and dead, their real ages etc), I probably would've been fooled.

For me Tarkin worked extremely well even though you could tell there was something off every now and then, but it wasn't distracting. It's 100 times better than young Jeff Bridges in Tron Legacy.
Leia on the other hand I felt was way too uncanny. The eyes were great, but the whole mouth area felt too rubbery I guess?

I was waiting Tarkin to turn around and I was convinced they didn't have the guts to do it CG. I wasjust waiting for "who must be playing it? Better looks like Cushing". He turned around and I simply saw Peter Cushing himself and I couldn't believe it. It took the whole scene to comfirm there was cgi involved, not just prostetic make up. It's really well done and those who say "looks like beoware" should be condemned to be attached in a chair and watching Beoware 5 times in a row.

For Leia I was expecting the cg, but again, it's incredible what they have got. I can see it's cg, but it's at a level that I can forget about it and just enjoy. The model is impressive.

I think overall it was more telling of the CG a few times you saw them in motion, but there were scenes were you 100% forgot about it and they looked as real as they could be. Those moments were truly amazing!

It's both amazing and disturbing. For movies, it's amazing but bad people can exploit these to blackmail people ( imagine your face in a gay porn :D ) or to make false flags politics events.

    Time will tell.

The positive thing about not reading any spoilers or about details in the story:

Tarkin and Leia aparition was a huuuge surprise. Tarkin was so real in his first shot that I was wondering if was a real actor, of course that later you can notice that. Leia at the end was perfect.

I could definitely tell that it was CGI, especially when there were shots really up in Tarkin's face it was fairly obvious. But it didn't bother me. It was good enough that I could just buy it and enjoy seeing Tarkin again on screen.

For me it felt a bit like the Tauntauns or the Walkers on Hoth. I mean, yeah, it's incredibly obvious that they're stop motion, but does it really matter? No not really.

I liked Tarkin a lot, it was a surprise the CGI quality, Leia not so much and I think Leia should have a sad face because of so much rebel soldier who just died....

They used it in the prequels to great effect to paste dooku and sidious' faces on when they fought. I mean, it looked horrible if you freeze framed, but for the fast paced fights, it looked great.

I really liked it. Kinda eerie what they can do now. I think with the first scene with Tarkin and the close up you could kinda tell it was CGI but the rest of the scenes were flawless to me. I wonder if Carrie Fisher gets any royalties for using her likeness, lol.

Yeah, back then it was in it's infancy. They did it again in X3 the following year. But what they showed tonight was.. wow..
Even after Paul Walker in F7 I was not prepared for the quality of facial movement and detail. The actual conversations he had especially with krennic really pulled it off.
