Thanks for the mention! Yeah I was tearing up when the immediate previous scene was the Dark Lord of the Sith killing Rebelscum like they were flies - I mean, it was the horror but I was at the same time struck and awed. Then we see the insides of the Tantive IV, and when we saw the back on Her Worship OMG I was really really tearing and clapping at the same time!! I didn't think they would show her face - my initial prediction had been just to see the back of her - but seeing her face saying "Hope" (which sounds like they took from the original ANH audio) was really awesome! The CGI was really neat.

Mainly, I'm just glad we got them. There wasn't a character that we had CGI's into the film that I would have wanted to do without- Lucas certainly did worse with later editions of the OT, for sure (that big lipped abomination in Jabba's Palace, to name only one).

Tarkin certainly wasn't perfect, but he was good (in fact, when I asked my wife what she thought of him, she had no idea he was CGI anyway). I think Edwards was a little bold with how much of Tarkin they showed, and how full on. They could have easily featured him more from the back or the side, or even in shots like in the trailer where he's shown through a reflection, and throw in a few more full on shots every now and then to at least make it seem like they're not trying to hide anything. Instead, they rather prominently featured him during his scenes. It just seemed to me like they were a little more confident in how he looked than they deserved to be. But again, I'm not mad, I'm very happy he was in the film.

Personally, I thought Leia's model was insanely well done. I could barely tell she was CGI, which is crazy given how her character is so iconic.

I know! I went to see the movie with friends who are either casual fans or no fans at all (for one of them it was the first SW movie ever he watched!) and they couldn't tell it was CGI for Tarkin until I mentioned the actor had passed away years ago. For Leia it was really good. I wonder what the real Leia thinks about it - so far no mention on her Twitter account LOL.

I just wonder: how did they do Tarkin's voice? Did they use the voice actor from Rebels?

For Leia it is easy, I guess: it did sound to me like they used a audio clip from ANH.

Yeah, no idea how they did Tarkin's voice. Some of it (much like with Leia as well) could have been recycled from ANH. Edwards had access not only to ANH assets, but from material cut from that film, so he reportedly used some dialogue that was recorded but never used.

It was great, though. Who would've thought that we'd see so many of these beloved characters back on the big screen?

I really liked Tarkin, but I didn't really like Leia. There was not enough urgency in her expression for the moment in which they showed her.

So here is my BIG question for everyone about the CGI Leia and Tarkin: Were the renderings better in 2D or 3D? I only saw the last 30 minutes in 3D and my initial impression is they were better than the 2D renderings... but I only saw the WHOLE movie in 2D...

I am going to take my mom to see this movie, but I would really like to know which format everyone thought looked best... everyone, but especially from those that have seen it in both 2D and 3D!

That's an interesting thought. 3D kinda makes some things look a little funny already, so it's possible that your brain already has a little suspension of disbelief, and the CGI scenes wouldn't be so stark.

I have only seen it in 3D so far and from what I could tell, the only thing that bothered me slightly was how expressive Tarkin's face was in the first scene. His eyes somehow looked different compared to the rest of the CGI, if that makes any sense.

I'm not hating on it, it was extraordinary to see the late Peter Cushing make one final appearance on the screen, but it took me a minute or two to get used to his presence on the screen. 2D will be the real test, because then there won't be that black filter that goes with the 3D glasses and you'll be able to see the details more clearly.

It wasn't good enough unfortunately. But i liked the film enough that I didn't care about it.

I thought it was fantastic. I'm pretty sure there are some people who will never know those were not real actors. I knew about Tarkin going in, but not about Leia. That last 5 minutes or so was just a thing of beauty. I could watch it a thousand times.

I was saying it's 99% there too. So close! So close it's scary what comes next for human cgi. It's really when they talk that it shows. Almost like someone with Botox. But it was totally awesome.

So people thought it looked better in 2D than in 3D? I saw it in 3D.

Usually movies look better in 2D imo. Even the best 3D glasses make the whole screen a bit darker than the original colours. I think the smaller details are also more visible in 2D.

I'd like to see Carrie Fisher's reactions to seeing her 30-years-younger self on the screen! You know if she doesn't like it, she's going to say something about it... Oh Carrie Fisher... We love you! ;)

And here's a bit about Princess Leia's actress (Ingvild Deila):

    I agree with this assessment.

That being said, I nearly freaked out when I saw Tarkin. Whilest I had heard the rumblings that Tarkin was in it, I fully expected a look-alike actor (probably being given a lot of make up to enhance the effect). Instead I saw Peter Cushing, and every moment Tarkin was on screen, I had a big dumb grin on my face, and I still do whenever I think of it.

Grand Moff Tarkin looks great, but I don't like the cgi look of Young Leia, looks fake to me. I think the young Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Douglas looked much more better in CA3 and Ant-Man
