I thought Tarkin was nearly perfect and in a few times disturbing perfect. I watched again and I suggest look into the second time he appears. In some moments there, I´m sure ILM mande some kind of necromancy.

I saw the movie with my wife, who had not watched a Star Wars movies since the 80's and my mom, who has seen all the movies. Neither of them realized Tarkin or Leia faces were CGI until I told them afterward.

You get the Force theme, though. That's not too shabby.

My only complaint was that the credits didn't list Tarkin as played by Peter Cushing...FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE.

I managed to dodge enough spoilers leading up to my first RO viewing that I had no idea that they were going to recreate Tarkin and Leia like that. I actually did a double take when Tarkin first turned around, as I was expecting it to be a Cushing look-alike and was interested to see how close they'd come. Then suddenly... there he was!

I'd say they got him somewhere around 97%-98% spot on, and I suspect that main aspects that fell SLIGHTLY short were the nuances of his mouth movements when he spoke, and (as others have pointed out) that CGI doesn't seem to be able to quite put enough life into the eyes yet. But man, this was really, REALLY close.

Leia wasn't quite as spot on, and I think that was partly that they had her in such bright light compared to Tarkin's scenes, and now looking at the screen caps above, they didn't quite get the tip of her nose right - it's just a bit low compared to Carrie's in ANH. But still, a pretty damned good attempt and a very dramatic moment.

I was glad that I didn't know about the CGI recreations going into the movie, because I think it made my initial reaction more honest than it might have otherwise been had I known what was coming and had time to pre-judge it.

(On a side-note... is "uncanny valley" to be the overused fanboy buzz-phrase for RO that "Mary Sue" ended up being for TFA?) ;)

I saw the movie just this afternoon again and I decided to let go of my tendency to focus on that as well. It worked because I enjoy the work they did on both of them.

I saw RO again today and yesterday I was watching ANH. If RO and ANH were a joint movie, you couldn't tell that much of a difference.

Time to finally add my vote since I've seen the movie. I went with option two. Tarkin, most of the time, actually looked amazing. But as much as it looked like Peter Cushing and made possible his presence in multiple scenes, it did not exactly look "real" next to the other actors. It looked like it would be at home in the visual world of Revenge of the Sith, but not in a movie like Rogue One, where the visuals are so grounded in reality. Still, Tarkin was a positive for me.

Much as I was pleased with him, though, I was less impressed by Leia. Hard to say why, but for some reason I just didn't buy the resemblance as much. Still, I think in both cases Lucasfilm made the right call, and besides, this makes possible the presence of almost any character in upcoming movies in ways that didn't used to be possible.

She was great at 3/4 view she shouldnt fully have turned around. Then she did kind of look like a wax figure. But i did love it. Screenshot_20161215-225327.png

i agree with others who have expressed that the cgi was pretty amazing, but uncomfortable.

if Tarkin had only been in one short scene (like Leia) it wouldn't have bothered me, but scene after scene i just kept feeling like my brain was distracted by the reality that Peter Cushing is dead as a doornail (God rest him!), and therefore this was a lacquered over actor and lots of movie magic.

i don't like my movie magic being interrupted by knowledge that it's happening. even so, it was incredibly well done.

I think knowing Cushing has passed away and it was CGI adds a little to our critique as fans. My cousin and her two kids went with me Thursday and they never mentioned anything about how he looked. They didn't know he was dead until I told them on the way home, so for the average viewer, it is a pretty dang good CGI... Lea, I think if they had kept it at the side view or a more distance shot would have been a little better. Hers was a little off but still amazing!

Funny, I thought she looked better after she turned around and not as believable from the side.

CGI Tarkin and Leia looked amazing in my opinion, CGI was a much better option than just recast these characters and pretend that we do not notice different faces.
I hope that this will become standard ( I dislike when they recast characters ),
Young Luke Skywalker in the future maybe.

I saw the movie for the first time yesterday in 3D and was really surprised that they used CGI for Tarkin and Leia. I thought Tarking looked strange and unnatural. I thought Leia looked pretty bad. I saw it again today in 2D and actually thought both looked great! I don't know if it was a difference between 2D and 3D, or if I just thought less about it this time around.

Both of my two viewings were 2D and I reckon that the second they looked amazing because I was not overanalyzing every single movement of their faces.

It's not perfect, but it's a great way to bring back some memorable characters.

2d and Tarkin amazed me. Leia looked strange front on. Red leader and others, did you catch those? Thrilled me.

I really liked that Tarkin and Leia weren't just shown from behind. The CGI had some hiccups I suppose but it never took me out of the scene

What an abomination that was. The fact that a crappy CGI Tarkin got more screen time then Darth effin Vader is blasphemy. So bummed out. Prob never get another opportunity to see Vader in his prime on the big screen again and they blew it because its about all the other boring characters with zero character arc!? Give me a break.

I would have liked to have overheard that conversation.

"Hey kids! You know that old man who took over the Death Star?"

    "Yeah!!!111!11!1"

"Well he's dead! Oh, and there's no Santa Claus."
