How do you feel about a CGI Trakin? Rumor has it that they're digitally recreating Peter Cushing's character for Rogue One.

I´m sorry, I didn´t mark anything. I don´t believe there´s anyone here who would take that rumor seriously :)

It can't possibly be true. And in the unlikely case that it is, I simply don't understand. The galaxy isn't a small place; I'm sure many other Imperials could take whatever storyline they 'need' Tarkin for.

The only thing about this is that they are stealing the Death Star plans, and The DS was Tarkin's baby. I'm all for opening up the galaxy, but in this case I'd understand if he was in it.

As for CGI? I don't know. That article had all kinds of wrong in it, so I don't believe it's true. But if they do it, I hope it's because it was the best option, and not one of convenience.

If the rumor is true, I can't see them creating extended scenes with a CGI Cushing. That said, you can see them getting away with it in a holographic communication.

What I know for sure, is they should try a Practical effect Peter Cushing. (ackbar)

Someone had a thread a while back in the ST forum 'bout Disney CGI'ing Alec Guinness -- based on old reports that Lucas bought the rights to some dead actors. Damn, was he on target.... My question with Tarkin is if it's a speaking role. Dead actors have been CGI'd before but with the use of pre-existing dialogue. If they create new dialogue with some kinda TTS program, that'd be a game changer. I don't think that's ever been done before in Cinema.

I'm not 100% sold on the idea, but if there's anyone that I'd trust to try this, it would be Star Wars. Say what you will about Jar Jar, but I think even now (over fifteen years later) he still looks pretty darn good. And in my mind, Star Wars has always been about advancing the art of film-making as well as making movies, so I'm interested to see if this rumor is true, and if so, what it means for the industry.

Compelling. Now, if they can get his gaze to look like it will steal your soul, we may have a winner.

Since they're digitally recreating Cushing it's safe to safe they're going for close ups this time. Prosthetics just won't hold up to scrutiny up close.

I agree with this guy. They whole point of Star Wars in the first place is to push the boundaries of special effects. simply doing CGI is no longer pushing the boundaries. Thats why TFA is pushing the "practical effects angle". Thats why Jar Jar and Watto and the Droids were fully realized CGI characters in 1999. Thats why ILM was founded in 76 or whatever. Now that TFA is pushing practical effects farther then they've been in a while, lucasfilm can't just sit on its laurels and be like, "hey, look at BB8, cool right?" They have to keep pushing.

It would be super cool if both Tarkin and Vader have SOME presence in this movie. I am a bit skeptical, but it's a great opportunity for this team to push the boundaries...........IF it looks 97.25% close to Tarkin, nothing less though. (star destroyer)(emperor)(epic fail) This "report" could also be COMPLETELY FALSE !!!! Nonetheless, I am starting to enjoy the fact we are posting on TWO Star Wars movies......at the same time !! (r2-d2):):):):):D:D:D:D:D:p:p:p:p:cool::cool::cool::cool:

A fully CGI Tarkin sounds daft to me. However, using a good actor who looks rather like Cushing and then applying digital makeup to make him resemble Cushing even more: this, I could see. It would push the boundaries of current effects, while building upon technologies we've already seen in action...

I think this is just another bunk rumor. We got a similar one back in 1997 or so when Lucas was gearing up for TPM, and a story went around about how they were going to use a CGI rendering of Alec Guinness for Obi Wan.

And even if it were more than a bunk rumor, I'd probably not think much of it.

It looked dismally bad when they did this to Jeff Bridges in that Tron sequel awhile back, and though it looked a bit better when they tried it on Schwarzenegger for the recent Terminator movie, they also didn't have to animate the face all that much for that one. That's where CGI recreation of an actor really starts to fall apart. Facial expressions are like fingerprints, and it's a mighty tall order to try to replicate that in CGI.

I just think we've come a really, really long way since TPM. And even Tron and Terminator, those are not going to have the commitment to ground breaking effects ILM is gearing up for for SW.

Well, as much as I expect the new SW films to have solid effects, I also think we're talking about a concept that still sounds a lot better on paper than what's actually possible onscreen. ILM is the best of the best and probably always will be. No question in my mind about that. But there's a lot more to CGI recreation of an actual person than simply getting the sculpt and textures right, which I've no doubt ILM can do.

It's the countless tiny, almost imperceptible movements that occur on a person's face from moment to moment that they aren't likely to replicate. Because those movements are different for everyone. And if those aren't there, the CGI face isn't going to look convincing.

That's why I think that if there is anything to this Tarkin rumor (and I'm still not convinced that there is) I would hope that they'd cover the rough bits of the CGI model by having Tarkin appear as a hologram.
