What do you think about changing Rey's hairstyle? In my opinion, she looks much better now.

However, the process of change itself seems to be a funny situation. In my opinion, Rey changed her hairstyle because ... She lost her hair elastics! Everything happened in a moment when Rey fell into this huge black hole on the Ahch-To, falling straight into the water. From the beginning of her stay on the island, Rey wore her old hairstyle, and after leaving the water she had a completely new hairstyle design.

What do you think about this situation and did Rey really change her hairstyle by losing hair elastics?

Yes, her new hair looks better than her prior style.

Maybe she just wanted to let her hair get dry again, so she was wearing her hair loose during the interaction with Kylo. After that she had simply no time to make her hair again. Or she just wanted to look similar to Kylo Ren. ;D

The ST is in part a coming-of-age story for Rey. The things that happen around the time of the hairstyle change are all meant to build toward that.

From her Forceback in TFA, we know Rey has had that hairstyle since she was little, and she's kind of been keeping it so that her parents will recognize her when they come back.

But now it's time for her to face the idea that her parents are never coming back, and she has to forge an identity for herself apart from her idea of her parents. When she falls into the hole and then the water, it symbolizes that she's ready to make that change, to grow up. She's ready to look in the mirror and find the truth. Her hair coming down (at least partially) is an indicator of that. As the scene progresses, she makes even more progress from a child to an adult.

But that doesn't mean she also didn't literally lose her hair elastics in the water. ;)

    this!

also, she not only changes her hairstyle, but puts on a whole new outfit before mailing herself to Ben.
which is what girls/women do when they want to make a good impression. ; D

She lost the bands yes :p, but that scene also functions like a baptism. What better way to signify that Rey has become a different person after the mirror sequence than by giving her a different hairstyle.

I hope that the question of Rey's hairstyle will be explained to us somewhere, in comics or books. Thank you so much for your answers.

to add further to that, what would you like to see her hair style be next ep? do you think it will completely different or stay in the half up half down vein?

Concept art shows that Kylo could have had a quite different hair style as well ...
Who knows, maybe they'll use his look for Rey in Episode IX.

I would suspect they will continue to show her evolution into a full-fledged "adult" through at least one more hairstyle change--I'm guessing a fully down look to contrast with the updo of the three bobbles. But we shall see! :D

For another thread but noooooo he can't lose his beautiful hair!!! (to be fair i don't think he will because the character is embarrassed about his ears)

*sobs* that makes sense. And the elastics too!

A porg of cuteness for you!!

    That would be interesting.

From a personal cosplaying point of view, going from one hairstyle to another shortens the time of getting ready in costume (I had gotten proficient in making the three buns by now, but it takes longer than just the simpler hairstyle she wears in the Throne Room).

I was seeing some fan art the other day that got the wheels turning and I wonder if she will be the half up half down but something of a braid in there too. Maybe as a slight nod to the padawan rat tail but it’s also still tied back for practical reasons...because I could be wrong but for me the Rey character everything she does is for practical reasons. She had no luxuries in her life

Or she just, you know, changed out of her wet clothes. ;)

I like The Last Jedi concept art with the longer braid. This could also show a passage of time - her hair got longer.

I did think this plus how many days did she wear that outfit? Now obviously it’s a little funny that the kickass (hint of grey Jedi) inspired outfit matched her original dessert one when we all know she did not have time to have a change of clothes when fleeing Jakku

Ther original outfit made more sense as it looked like some spare things they had on D’khar (sp)

I know I’m splitting hairs hahaha

just like Ben's hair was so beautiful and perfect the first time he took off his helmet.
no possible other reason for a director to do that; purely practical. ; D

Honestly, I prefer the 3 bun look, it's iconic.

People actually started wearing their hair like that. In video games that allow you to create female characters, that hairstyle is an option that you can put on your character. Overnight 230949021390423095721348787432 WikiHow article tutorials on how to get your hair like that sprung up. This might sound silly but her hair was one of the only things if not the only thing to become bigger than the movie itself.

I'm not saying that her new hairstyle in TLJ is bad or anything. I think it makes her look more you know, official and mature but there's really nothing all that unique to it.

I wonder what they're gonna do in 9.

I think Rey's three little buns will always be iconic, just as Leia's cinnamon buns were iconic even though she only had them in one movie. :)

I don't really care either way (change Hairstyle or not).
If I were an ultra ultra ultra sensitive person, I'd say it looks a bit sort of in a weird way that remind me as a sorta sorta real life Japanese hairstyle.
    rvtv,
Was there a hair style change for Rey between movies TFA and TLJ? I didn't notice.
