    Children of the Force

Please note, this post possibly contains spoilers from old rumors last year. I honestly haven't followed the leaks like I did for TFA, but I did read what I considered an interesting leak during last summer and have used this leak as the basis of my theory.

It’s less than 90 days until the Last Jedi. I’ve been marinating this theory for a while, trying to cross my I’s and dot my T’s. I have attempted to create a Snoke theory of my own by using the films, novels and rumors that I’ve read about and here is what I’ve come up with. My goal was to take a step back, look at what we know about the story and try to formulate a story that is new, builds on the mythology, and raises the stakes from what Palpatine was. As much respect as I have for Darth Sidious, the Emperor, I've always felt that Star Wars had to raise the stakes, and create something different, otherwise, there's no point other than being a cheap money-grab, so to speak. I am giving Disney more credit than that, and I would be disappointed if Snoke did not raise the stakes for the sequel trilogy.

    But first, a little backstory...

Last summer there was some wild rumors going around about Rey’s origins, an ancient Force Tree, and two children in the ancient past who were exploring a new planet with their parents. For the intents and purposes of this theory, I’m going assume there is some truth to these rumors, even if it's not written exactly this way.

To quickly recap, the crux of this said that the boy and girl ran off and stumbled upon a tree. The boy reaches out and touches the tree, gains Force powers, kills his sister, and later his parents and leaves the planet. The girl survives with help from the tree, and later forms some kind of Jedi/Lightside Order. It is implied that she is reincarnated, again and again, throughout history, always returning.

Anakin was one of these reincarnations. The Chosen One.

And now, so is Rey. They are Children of the Force.

At least that’s how it was explained.

Before we get into my personal take on this, I just want to clarify that we may not see or hear about this exact story in The Last Jedi, but I do believe at some point there will be a "fairy-tale within a fairy-tale" so to speak going-on explaining Snoke's existence (similar to the backstory of the Deathly Hallows in Harry Potter if you're familiar).

    Here’s where my story begins...

    ————————

The wild rumors left out a pretty interesting detail from that story: what ever happened to the boy who killed the girl and their parents and left the planet?

I am going to suggest that this boy is Snoke. Or what remains of him anyways. I do believe that Snoke was dead for several thousands of years. I’ll Assume that the boy grew up, and was defeated at some point by his sister or her eventual followers. But his spirit remained, through all of the Force users who weilded the Darkside. Not alive physically, but always living, as the Darkside.

So how does this Darkside spirit/energy become a physical being again?

The answer, I believe, is Anakin.

Anakin was a Child of the Force. A reincarnation of the First Lightside Force User. The Chosen One. There have been many names.

But Anakin fell to the Darkside, and this, I believe, is crucial to Snoke’s awakening. While not necessarily genetically related, Anakin was a reincarnation of Snoke's sister. The Chosen One, a true Child of the Force, falls to the Darkside. This unprecedented event disrupted the balance of the Force so much, that the source of the Darkside was awoken.

Palpatine sensed this presence in the Unknown Regions shortly after the Empire is formed as explained in the Aftermath novels. After Vader is formed. Yupe Tashu even says that Palpatine believed it was the “source” of the Darkside. The boy who touched the tree.

This is how Snoke came to be, how he knew events from the earliest days of the Empire to the Palpatine’s defeat in ROTJ. As Vader’s powers grew, so did Snoke’s. His life source was tied to the existence of Darth Vader. This is how he could know everything that’s happened. How he would know Darth Vader's innermost thoughts. His life, his mere existence, is directly tied with Anakin.

When Vader died, Snoke was left in a disfigured state in the Unknown Regions, unable to achieve his true, powerful form.

But then a new opportunity presented itself.

    Ben Solo.

This would explain the dark presence Leia feels in Empire's End while pregnant with Ben. He began feeding off of Ben Solo, eventually luring him into his clutches.

As Ben Solo grows more powerful, so too does Snoke. And on top of it, Palpatine's last order sent the remnants of the Imperial Army directly to Snoke's location: the Unknown Regions. How he came to be their Supreme Leader is still a mystery to me, but he didn't have to go very far to seek them out.

    Fast forward to TFA...

Rey is a Child of the Force. A reincarnation of the First Lightside User. As Anakin was before her. This is why she shares a strong connection with Anakin's lightsaber. This is why she can use the Force fairly quickly once she realizes she has it. And this sets up the main, winner takes all conflict in the end: Snoke versus Rey, the reincarnation of his sister. The very lifeblood of Lightside and Darkside.

I believe this is going to be the big reveal moment in The Last Jedi, and why Rian is being so coy about Snoke's background. If it's literally the "pull the carpet" moment of this trilogy, of course he's going to say that there isn't background on Snoke in the movie.

    ———————

That’s all I have for this theory. Please know I'm grateful if you read through it. Feel free to add on, dissect, trash me. I’m excited for this movie and have been thinking about this for weeks and had to get it off of my chest!

I have been considering this theory myself, and it would make for a great story to tell. This does not mean Rey didn't have parents either. Anakin did. Her parents would be insignificant, but where she comes from would be what counts. That is almost exactly what the EW article said regarding the revelations she'll uncover about her past in TLJ.

I agree. Everything hinges on this being a great story. I haven’t read that EW article, but maybe I will this morning. Cheers.

WOAH. That is a pretty darn good theory. And It kind of makes sense. It offers an excellent explanation of how Rey became so powerful so fast. And Snoke? Now that I am thinking about it, maybe he is the boy who touched the tree. I don’t know. We are going to have to wait another 80 or so days to find out. Awesome theory and wow I can tell you put a ton a time and research on this I really respect that.

In the TFA novelization Snoke said that he witnessed the rise and fall of the empire and Serkis just said that he knows the backstory to Snoke, and strongly hinted that it would be revealed in TLJ. I think there will be some sort of twist or shocking reveal to the identity of Snoke but he is such a central character to the ST that they will have to have some way of explaining him that is both satisfying to the die hard SW junkies AAANNNNDDDD simple enough for the vast majority of fans. A theory like the one posited here is simply too complicated for the second requirement.

I think they have been laying the groundwork to meet the first requirement through the novels. Thrawn talked about a more serious threat in the unknown regions that precipitated his exploration into a possible alliance with the Empire. The observatory on Jakku and comments to Palpatine's search for the source of the Dark Side in the unknown regions, etc.

I think we are going to find out there is some connection to all of it, but in the end, Snoke needs to be a baddie with understandable motives and background....maybe. Recall that in the OT all we knew was that the Emperor was a bad guy who wanted power, he didn't need to be any deeper than that.

I understand your feelings but I will politely disagree. If they tell something similar to the “tree story” in TLJ, they will have already setup the explanation required to reveal later that the boy in the Forceback is Snoke. Cheers though and thanks for reading!

    Rewatching The Force Awakens.

I have the feeling that Snoke has very little confidence in Kylo Ren.
