Having watched the movie a few times now, I'm a little confused as to where the cloudy skies on Starkiller Base go.

We see a very cloudy overcast day when Hux is giving his speech before they fire the weapon, even though we saw few clouds from the long shot flyover right before they speak with Snoke.

The Millennium Falcon crashes there, it's overcast. The Base then sucks the energy of the sun, and we see a few holes in the clouds then, just enough for the sun to come through.

They seem to not be present when we see the base from space, but from the surface it's always pretty cloudy and overcast. What's the deal?

Starkiller Base is built into the core of an actual planet. therefore it has an atmosphere, ecosystem, etc.

as opposed to the Death Star, which was an orbiting space station.

look in the upper left corner: atmosphere. you just have to imagine the scale.

It's a ice planet the clouds evaporated when it exploded.

well cloud cover is white, so you can't technically see it clearly from outer space if the majority of the surface taint is also white. You do see some clouds by the way in the space shots, but not many, I agree.

I heard a few rogue ILM visual effects guys hid the shapes of George Lucas and Jar Jar Binks in the clouds. I will post the screengrab when I find it. Don't tell Abrams.

I'm just puzzled how the energy blow that destroyed multiple planets didn't burn the Starkiller Base's atmosphere.

I don't know if it was explain somewhere, but it could work like a lightsaber, so the energy is in an energetic/magnetic field that contains it until it touch something solid (or in this case until it lands in a planet) and finally release all of it ;)

Maybe the energy used from the nearby star didn't effect the base's area.

Depends on the rate at which you take the solar energy. The sun's heat is less than say for instance a Hydro Bomb. It could work with some significant area effect but no overall damage to the planets atmosphere. Besides I don't know how the shield with it's refresher rate works when they slurp the sun to refuel the weapon.
