It doesn't HAVE to be that way. It's just a story element man.
It would have been a interesting connection to bring things back to being an intimate story.
It explains and builds on Kylo's rage. It explains and builds on Han and Leia feeling sympathetic for Rey right away...

Then literally everything ever in film is exposition to you. That's not accurate.

How is that any different from a different kind of establishing story elements?

You can go bombastic and still not have a fight be on the damn Death Star again.
Why not on Tatooine. At least it's been nearly 15 years since we last went there.

There are some things to like in his version, but I feel JJ knows the source material better. He began the Trilogy and he will finish what he started.

As for Rey supposedly being Palps granddaughter. I don't like it if it's true. Not a fan of it. But I like Palps being in the movie.

Maybe I am wrong to use the term exposition what I truly mean is that at some point the film would have to stop what it is doing and explain all of this. Then it needs to mean something for the remainder of the movie.

So what would it mean? Other then establishing Rey has a terrible memory that she wouldnt remember Han and/or Leia.

But would they have to "stop the film"? A logical leap could have been made (remember Carrie was still alive at this point), that visiting the old Solo homestead could have something important....say a lightsaber for Rey to use that Luke had Leia build in her training but being who she was never felt the need to carry it or it reminded her of the bad times so she left it behind. Now post TLJ she could actually have time to go get it...while there she is visited by force ghost Luke....Part of the rumor is she was due her lightsaber moment in Trevorrow's script. So you get a scene with Luke and Leia again to talk about Ben and their father...and force ghost Anakin joins them....none of this is expository. This could be a logical leap for how to get back there and have it all be about character building with a line or two...maybe some old photos showing Rey as a child with the Solos.

7 year olds who undergo traumatic events such as: a surrogate older sibling going apeshit and killing people, surrogate families being torn apart, losing your parents due to their drinking, being abandoned, can cause one to mentally block things out and create safeguards to not think of them again. This is a real phenomenon actual humans have to deal with. Do not underestimate what trauma can do to a young child.
I personally know full grown adults who underwent severe trauma and honestly have blocked most of it out of their conscious mind. It happens.

It would just mean that Rey isn't out of place. She doesn't have a special name, she was the "help" growing up but her place in this is secure. Again, doesn't have to be there, just and interesting thread to unravel.

Still probably better than OMGZ ANOTHER CLONE BECAUSE THAT HASN'T BEEN DONE TO DEATH IN STAR WARS

I've always personally loved the fact that Rey has no connection. She's the only protagonist that we are introduced to who doesn't have a common link with everyone she meets. No family, no friends, no affiliations. Everyone is a stranger. It's the one character choice they made for her that makes her unique.

To give her a random familial or childhood connection to an established character at this point would be a massive mistake imo. It would cheapen her character entirely.

Stories are better when characters are connected than when they aren't. Random crap happening in a story is just incoherent, there's always supposed to be the illusion of a grand design conveyed to the audience even if you're making it up as you go along.

Star Wars is supposed to be a FAMILY SOAP OPERA set in space which is how George Lucas intended it to be.

I don't quite buy all of what MSW is claiming about Trevorrow's work. Jack Thorne supposedly wrote the last script before Terrio and Abrams took over too. I suppose it's possible when Fisher died they panicked and rewrote IX with no role for Leia (Kennedy and Johnson at the time in 2017 claimed VIII would be the last time Leia would ever be seen again.) at all before the deleted scenes idea with Abrams was broached with the estate as Billie Lourd said at the end of 2017 she talked to Abrams about continuing Leia's role that way. And then Leia was intended to be Rey's actual mother before Fisher died and the rewrite.

    LOL that storys sounded terrible.

Rey being a daughter of a Nanny?

I am a fan of a Rey palpatine over Rey Solo/Skywalker or a nobody.

I also like the Palpatine being back because i think he planned this all along but some events didn't work out the way he planned. The scene in Rotj when he is speaking to Vader, he mentions how everything is going to plan which makes me think he has foreseen Anakin betraying him. He obviously survives and makes his way to the unknown regions and plans his revenge and eventually uses Snoke as a puppet to get revenge on the skywalker family and no better way than to have Leia and Hans sons be turned to the Darkside.

I dont believe he knew had a grand daughter and he must think something is up with this girl from nowhere convincingly beating Snokes apprentice. I bet he is jacked about GD is aligned with his most hated enemy's in the Skywalkers and wants her killed. This would explain Luke's reluctance to train Rey ( he might have an idea who she was) and also how she she is powerful.

Some will say that they could not imagine Sheev going out and have a relationship with someone. Being that he was a high level politician and eventually chancellor he could get many of woman. He would no doubt be doing this with the intention to have an heir he can one day manipulate to do his bidding of ruling the galaxy.

This is a guy that that manipulated the republic and created a proxy war where he had a clone army turn against all the jedi and kill them all. He had countless apprentices on the go. He had so many contingencies in place with super weapons, hidden armys & a Fleet in the middle of nowhere years later, so having an heir would be one of those.

To me that is a wayyyyyyyyyyyy more interesting story.

Now I understand why Trevorrow was removed from the movie. This sounds really bad, furthermore it's contradicting to the actual canon.

I prefer her being a nobody, but this? Never.

How would this looked like? Kylo sees family pictures on the wall and gets nostalgic? Seeing pictures of little Ben with Chewie, Lando, Han and Leia? So cheesy! xD

Mind wiping- one of the laziest story tropes. Same goes for cloning.

After reading this I'm more open for JediPraxi's leak of JJ's EPIX.

You won't often find me knocking Jason Ward, but imo that's the stupidest article I've ever seen on his site.

I won't speak negatively about a fine film maker based on that.. like some have on this thread.

The guy spent a big chunk of time learning/living/writing Star Wars, and LF decided to go another way. It's disrespectful to judge what he may have made from something as scant and "murky" as this.

The FO was brainwashing Finn and the other, but not mind wiping. Brainwashing reduce its subject's ability to think critically and to allow the introduction of new, unwanted thoughts and ideas into the subject's mind, as well as to change his or her attitudes, values, and beliefs. This is exactly what was going on TFA, what we got presented in the other canon material.

A Mindwipe on the other hand, is a procedure where the subject's memories and personality are erased.

I can see Kylo Ren being able to perform a mindwipe, but the FO, no... Not without some magical drugs and frankly speaking that's a story I would not be that interested in.

Yeah mind wiping/altering doesn't need to be expanded upon just because it's there. Let it be just for Force users and only work on the weak minded.

Exactly! Treverrow probably misunderstood brainwashing with mind wiping.

That's how criticism works through. You base your criticism on the stuff you have.

criticizing the ideas that JW may have heard about is not what i was referring to. If they were actual plans for ep9 then i'd agree that they sound sucky.

    i agree.

    i think this is disrespectful.

    just my opinion :)

It's coming out of JW mouth and not CT. So we only have JW's word if it's even true or not. Also, that could've been a very early script idea. Things change during production all the time. Hell, look how different the OT was from first drafts to final drafts.

That is a lot to show that doesnt explain anything. As for the trauma sure, but you need to still somehow need to explain that on the screen. Cant leave it for just plain assumption. Who is suggesting a Clone. Still think the best story is she is just a no one. No need for a Clone or any previously relationships with our characters. I do believe this would involve some expository scenes that simply arent needed. They tell us nothing more that we need to know.

Sounds like CT would have been a better choice for Ep VIII than IX. As described it seems more along the lines of a slower more intimate, character building type movie which is usually the case for the middle act. Alas we will never know.

It happens a lot in the real world though. Those family members you haven't seen since you were a kid that now show up to your graduation or you meet at a third family member's wedding? Vague enough that you THINK you might remember them, but they definitely remember you?

Overall, some of the stuff I think was pretty clever, like Rey being the daughter of a servant of the household, but the family then kicked out and they go back to Jakku (which explains Kylo's extreme reaction in TFA which STILL makes no sense if he hasn't met Rey before), or a final battle in an intimate home. But as others have said, after TLJ, we probably need a more bombastic, thematic setting (although if the Force Skypes took place in the Solo homestead, that might have worked). Others, like the FO erasing people's memories is just weird. Not that it couldn't fit into Star Wars, but it'd be weird for a movie, especially the final one.
