On the petition and George Lucas.

" It's funny, I saw that, and it was on a day where I was at Lucasfilm giving this big speech to everyone about how we want to channel the invention and just the raw creativity and the boldness that George brought to these films and not being afraid that we're going to embarrass ourselves by doing something that might be crazy, When George Lucas made Star Wars, a lot of people thought it was crazy," he said. "When you try to pitch what that movie's about -- if you've never heard of Star Wars before, you say, ‘Here's a character. His father's part robot, but he can also do magic. And there's a guy who can fly in a spaceship. He's got a dog for a friend!' -- it sounds insane. But it's the greatest story ever told. I just want to embrace that kind of invention and creativity that he brought to it."

As well as his work with Rian Johnson to make Episodes VIII and IX connect.

“ A story must evolve or perish, and Rian and I are working closely together to make sure our stories build off of each other and continue to evolve and take us to new places, and I think that’s what the fans expect and what they want.”

    Here's video also.

I thought Rian was writing the episode IX script? That quote kind of makes it sound like Trevorrow is the main story developer for IX, which makes me a little nervous. But it's good to hear they're collaborating closely.

He is. I think I see it just like you said. Trevorrow is the main story developer with Johnson writing out the dialogue and giving input on how to bridge the gaps with VII and IX. It is good they are working on things together.

Oh? I was re-reading the news about Rey's lineage, and there was this part:

Trevorrow added that he’s done “a lot of scribbling and a lot of notes” thinking about the story that he wants to tell in Episode IX (he’s writing the script with frequent partner Derek Connolly)

To me it would sound more like Rian Johnson's role is very marginal here, maybe only to provide the synopsis, and then Connolly and Trevorrow do the script. Don't know if this is a good or bad thing though.

I've read that they're actually working together, and that Johnson wrote a story outline for Episode IX. So perhaps the next two films will be quite interconnected.

George Lucas wants nothing to do with making Star Wars at this point in his life.
He loves Star Wars and he's been quite clear that is pains him to walk away, but he's also been very clear that he feels the pressure of his age and the ticking clock of death against his pile of a bucket list of projects; he has mentioned quite clearly that he wants to focus on his new child and his non-distributed, for friends and close circles only, Tone Poem films.

    He's basically entering into retirement.
Folks are acting like Disney pushed Lucas out; no, he walked out. He tried to hang around, and then realized that he wasn't any use hanging around and sticking his nose into things he wasn't even going to be willing to work on, and if he did, that he wouldn't be able to keep himself from getting too involved - more involved than he wanted to be. So...he walked away.

As Lucas' son, Jett, put it, "He wants to let it go and become its new generation."

I think it's a bit rude to ask the man to come back when he's wanting to focus on family life and personal art.
Thank you for everything Lucas; now go enjoy, "you time".
