On this week's Collider Jedi Council, Kristian Harloff, Ken Napzok, Alex Damon, and Joseph Scrimshaw discuss: Solo opens to disappointing opening weekend box office numbers; THR reports that James Mangold is writing and will direct a Star Wars stand-alone movie centered on Boba Fett; Han and Chewie could have met under different circumstances in earlier drafts of the Solo script; Ron Howard talks about the cameo in the film; Disney is possibly looking at releasing only one Star Wars film a year going forward and more.

Harloff compared Solo to a television episode:eek:. He didn't like TLJ even though he won't admit it:confused:. I understand fans want the best for their beloved franchise, so I can related to some of Harloff's issues yet, for some reason I don't think he will ever be satisfied with a Star Wars film simply because he wants LFL to do what he wants.

For months, he has been complaining that LFL should incorporate lore from the books, TCW, and Rebels cartoons. Its finally done with Solo.
Darth Maul, Aurra Sing, Bossk etc...

He liked TFA, so i know he is looking forward to EPIX. But, what if JJ Abram decides to do something different like RJ? The reason I'm saying this, is because before TLJ was released Harloff praised RJ. He said he was a great writer and he was looking forward to his trilogy. Go back and watch Jedi Council videos a month before TLJ was released. It boggles my mind how much Harloff praised RJ before the film's release, now he wants RJ off Star Wars. He goes from one extreme to the next so quickly. Films are subjective, so everyone comes away differently, is all the sense I make of Harloff.

Harloff wanted 2 Star Wars films a year for the longest time. He kept saying thats the way its gonna go. HAHA now with all the TLJ and Solo backlash, he finally agrees with one a year. I think the OB1 film will bring back Star Wars to the point that there could be 2 films a year... but will we still get an OB1 film with Solo's dismal box office?

Harloff isn't the only one. Our boards were full of people swearing in Rian, because he would do something different and not do a 'rehash' like JJ. Then he made a film they didn't like and he is suddenly bad writer, destroyer of Star Wars and childhoods and should be banished to Sarlacc Pit. Now JJ is a savior again.

The, thing is, Kristian now believes that JJ will give us ton of fan service in EPIX, mainly because of TFA. But, I agree with Scrimshaw here - JJ is likely to take it as a challenge to finish the trilogy, something many claim he doesn't know how to do. And that is not going to be rehash of Return of the Jedi.

This is pretty much a microcosm for the SW fandom in general.

A lot of people were complaining that TFA was a rehash of ANH, totally unoriginal, fan service, calling him Jar Jar Abrams. They were all praising that TLJ will be risky and give us something different and unexpected. Then they got that, and the tune now was that Johnson totally ruined the series, he doesn't understand Star Wars at all, etc. Now everyone is so excited that Abrams is going to "do it right this time." The reality is that the fandom doesn't know what it wants. Star Wars is too personal, and I think most other franchises have a precedent of being adaptations so you generally know how it's all going to go (i.e. Marvel).

I think Lucasfilm can totally go with multiple Star Wars films a year, but they have to sit down and figure out a concrete game plan, which it sounds like they have only recently done. Up until now, they were sort of winging it, and there has always been this constant pressure of deadlines, production issues, release schedules, fan community backlash, and juggling a million different tie-ins and canon forms.

I think when the Disney sale happened at the end of 2012 they rushed into all of this head first with such a sketchy game-plan that it's all been sheer momentum through TFA/R1/TLJ/Solo, and only now is the dust starting to settle where there are no Star Wars films in any official form of production other than Episode IX. So now, they can slow down, look at where they are, how things have gone, and really now envision a unified, connected game plan for the next decade or so, like Marvel does.

I used to watch Jedi Council all the time. It was good when Campea and Smith were on it all the time. Once Campea left it went down hill, in hindsight after TLJ they clearly tried to gain favour with the mouse house. They are the ones that fooled me into thinking TLJ was going to be an amazing film. All of them talked it up, even Harloff.

Now at least Harloff has gone back to pointing out some realities of the amount of people who disliked the film and given credit to reasonable criticism's of the film as well as owning up to his own dislikes of the film. The others on that show I can't stand.

Harloff is good at landing great guest on Jedi Council that's why I still watch it. Scrimshaw and Alex Damon were a great addition for this weeks episode, but I don't agree with Harloff at times. He comes off really sketchy and it seems to me he likes to fuel controversy, which makes his show interesting at times but also annoying.

I'd say it needed Ellis instead of Harloff.

The rest of the panel was fantastic... Ken's enthusiasm, Alex's knowledge, and Joseph's ability to analyse and articulate... but Harloff just wants everybody to go along with his criticisms of the films. It was very much Kristian that was part of me getting back into Star Wars around the time of TFA, so I'm not hating on him, but I just don't think he's very good at discussing it, and he can't just be an impartial host. I know Ellis is probably a bit more forgiving, but he seems much more capable of playing the devils advocate role than Kristian... and I do think that they need both sides of the debate representing.

I think in this current climate Ken is not performing as well as he could. I love that he and Joseph go out of their way to be accepting of other peoples opinions, but when Harloff's ranting about it, Ken just kind of takes it without standing his ground. We need to see Drunk-Movie-Fights-Ken on the Council :D. Again, not bashing Ken, I'm a huge fan (His and Macuga's Afternoons Pod Cast is one of my favourites!).

FWIW, I went from really disliking Campea when he was on a panel, to really liking him when he does his own videos. I used to like Rocha, but some of the stuff he's spouting now seems to be little more than trying to get more likes from the Anti-Disney/LFL/KK people, and now I just don't want to watch him - Can't figure out the dynamic between him and Perri either.

Reilly is always good when it comes to Star Wars talk too.

This episode live streamed. I dont recall them doing that before and to be honest the YouTube chat was depressing. The comments were incredibly toxic. SJW this, Soylo that, they are all paid Disney shills (even Harloff), Kathleen Kennedy needs to go (or worse), Rian Johnson needs to go (or worse).

As for the episode. Some good stuff and to much anger. Kristian falls to much into the false equivalency and both sides do it tropes. He also is an absolutist when it comes to his thoughts. If he believes something it is fact. I really miss John Campea and some of the other people that used to be on this show. It was a must watch for me while I work. Earlier this year over a sequence of a few weeks it was awful. Kristian was running rough shod over others.

I really like everyone else on the show this week and I used to really like Kristian, but it seems he doesnt want to anger the toxic fans or wants to softly represent their views so as to keep views up. Ken and Mark are always good and the guests this week were great.

Been thinking a lot about this lately after I realized I hadn't even watched CJC in a month.

Harloff's modus operandi for the longest time was:

Plagueis, Plagueis, Plagueis, Plagueis, Sith, Plagueis, Plagueis, Snoke, Plagueis, Sith, Sith, Plagueis."

Seriously. His favorite canon book is Dark Lords of the Sith. He constantly hovered around Snoke is Plagueis theories for a long time and is obsessed with the Old Republic.

He's literally a wannabe Sith. lol

No one does a deep dive into lore and character as Joseph. That's one of the reasons I love ForceCenter Pod. Ken, Joseph and Jennifer are also not immune to criticizing Star Wars, but they are not leading the way with negativity which seems to be all the vogue nowadays in fandom.

LOL, I forgot Kristian was part of the Plagueis crowd.

I thought this was a great panel. Good conversation with each approaching the topics from a distinct point of view and mindset. I enjoy ForceCenter, mostly, but tire of them being in constant agreement. Positivity is important, to be sure, but voicing opposition and representing the larger fandom is equally significant I feel. And it doesn’t have to descend into base argument.

Showing how people can disagree, but still conduct themselves in a respectful manner is paramount in this modern extremist environment of ours. That’s what I appreciate most about this show and that’s what I think they delivered on successfully here.

ForceCenter has become my Go-To SW Podcast (after The Resistance....obviously).

They have the implicit understanding that: "Hey, I like this thing. I think I'll act like it." It's a valuable lesson.

Also need to add about Kristian Harloff. He did a Spoiler Talk with Ken on Solo. It was like did he even see it? Yes he did, but a couple of his criticisms were puzzling because it was like hey what you said happened didnt happen or what you say didnt happen did happen. Two examples: He criticized movie for Beckett only mourning 1 person. When clearly in the film there are 2 graves of the people he mourns. Another is he says it is stupid that Han speaks to Chewie in Shyriiwook and then stops. Again it is pretty clear why he speaks it: to get Chewie to listen and not killl him, and why he continues: so that the Stormtroopers dont know what they are doing. The film really presents that pretty clearly.

I dont think that he has seen Solo more then once and I remember back at TLJ time frame it was close to a month before he saw it for the 2nd time if I recall correctly. Honestly if you are going to have a site/podcast/youtube show you should see a Star Wars movie more then once before you go in depth. Only see it once give just initial impressions.

I think the production was more about an actor who can impersonates Han Solo than one that can impersonates Harrison Ford.

He was talking about how Beckett didn't morn his love for very long, which is valid. I am guessing the monkey pilot creature was just a crew mate, and for underworld types in Star Wars I guess you just don't get too close to them.

I find it refreshing that Harloff is prepared to be negative towards some new stuff. Ken I can just handle because he loves all the new stuff but can see other points of view. Mark Reily, Ellis, Rocha and Perri Nemiroff I can't watch anymore as they are either aggressive defenders of everything Disney or in just absolute denial/lacking in understanding of people who don't like some of the movies.

No just watched it again. Goto about the 17:50 mark. He complains that Beckett grieves for val for a 2nd and says he doesnt even mention Rio. Totally doesnt pay attention to the scene where Beckett is mourning in front of 2 graves when Han and Chewie walk up.

I think his life has just became to busy and he cant put the time in to properly lead that show. If you are running Jedi Council you should see the films you will be doing lots of content on more then once before you go into depth on the film.

Havent we been through this enough. How many funerals do we need in Star Wars movies. Well actually we have one in Solo and it isnt long enough. He says "When it comes to his buddy. This sad character of Rio do they even mention him". So kneeling and mourning isnt enough. Needed an eulogy. How much time do we need for the service. Think he needed to see it a 2nd time to catch what he missed the 1st time. Like Han speaking Wookie to get Chewie attention and hide plans from Stormtroopers.
