The "Episode VII-Coming in Summer 1986" thread got me thinking: Why stop there!

Let's pretend cinematic technology was truly ahead of its time, and they made "A New Hope" in 1948.

Who would they have cast as Luke Skywalker? As Princess Leia? As Han Solo? Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi? Tarkin and Vader?

Exactly the same screenplay, though. But you cannot use most of the existing cast, because they were either not born, or they were way too young! Stay age-appropriate in the casting! (Although, in 1948 Alec Guinness was 34 years old... at just the right age for.... nah... nevermind!)

Let's hear your casting choices! And what would it have been like?

    (I sense much googling ...) :)

I'm going to start the ball rolling with...

    Han Solo....... Humphrey Bogart!
    C3PO............ Roddy McDowall

(IMDB allows you to look up "Most Popular" by the year they were born...)

Erol Flynn as Tarkin? No offense, but the actor that came immediately to my mind was Boris Karloff.

Bogey as Han Solo would be a casting choice I'd find it rather hard to disagree with. But as an actress playing tough Leia then Lauren Bacall would then also be somewhat inevitable (not that I'd mind, on the contrary).

Many fine actors that could play Imperials or Rebels came to my mind, but I don't have a darn clue who might be suitable to play the part of Luke Skywalker. Suggestions, please!

Lee is great. But I want Orson Wells for Vader.
    Maureen O'Hara for Leia
Bogey is a clear choice for Han. But for an alternative, how about Brando?

yes I was trying to think of other classic horror actor of the period to work along side Lee
I know he is British but how about Peter O`Tool for Luke
another take on Han could be Richard Attinborough

I've been searching through everywhere for a Luke Skywalker...
Just found this place. And guess who was born 1928! He'd be 20 years old for a perfect Luke! (Okay, I kid... but he really was born in 1928!)

Btw... what started out as a fun idea is showing me that Casting a movie is really really hard! So many head-shots my eyes are gonna go crossed!

Yes, and frankly it's almost a bit eerie: Eddie Fisher

30 years later TPTB decide to reboot the "original" Star Wars and his daughter gets the female lead part...

To be perfectly honest I never liked the idea of using CGI to bring deceased Hollywood actors back to life, but this thread seriously makes me rethink my attitude.

I don't like reboots but a retro-boot is definitely something unheard of, right?

I agree with you, @Lt. Hija, Karloff would make a great Tarkin.

    My picks:

A swashbuckling adventure beyond the stars! A peril that threatens the entire galaxy! Witness the bizarre creatures from the farthest reaches of space! Marvel as brave heroes battle the evil Empire! No rocket ship too fast! No ray gun too powerful! No one will be able to resist the power of the mysterious power of The Force: The Star Wars!

    Starring...

Lauren Bacall as the lovely Princess Leia!

Gene Kelly as the dashing pirate, Han Solo!

George Sanders as his trusty alien companion, "Chewbacca"!

Lionel Barrymore as the wise and powerful "Jedi" knight, Ben Kenobi!

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello as the wondrous mechanical men, See-Three-Pee-Oh and Artoo-Deetoo!

Boris Karloff as the ruthless Governor Tarkin!

Walter Huston as the malevolent dark lord, Darth Vader!

...and introducing Paul Newman as Luke Skywalker!

    Uh, umm....

Princess Leia would be Judy Garland

    Han Solo - John Wayne

    Luke - Errol Flynn

    Darth Vader - Burt Lancaster

    Tarken - Laurance Olvier

    3PO- Bob Hope

That is truly a great list and if I were a studio boss, I'd say "sold" except for one detail.

Considering the current call of Lucasfilm for a Harrison Ford look-alike or actor who could fill his shoes for the second anthology film, I looked at various current candidates and thought "meh".

But now that you posted the above picture of young Paul Newman, I couldn't help but instantly think "OMG - That's him, Han Solo!!!"

As a big fan of Awesome Wells I'd naturally like to see him involved too, I think (with some good makeup as in Citizen Kane) he might be a very suitable candidate for Palpatine aka the Emperor.

And - of course - Karloff would have to wear a Stalin moustache, as the communists are now the bad guys.

Funny thing really is that all the imperial uniforms would still have to look in 1948 what they later looked in 1977 - a mixture of German Nazis, Soviet Communists and Japanese Imperialists.

If anybody reading this ever has the chance to talk for a minute to Carrie Fisher, please make sure to ask her what she would feel about her father Eddie playing Luke Skywalker in a CGI retro-boot of Star Wars.

Personally I'd feel such a film would still have rather characteristics of a hommage to that era like Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid.

And I could actually even imagine that this might be a project George Lucas could be interested in... (Possible title: The Planet Wars). ;-)

We need to make one of these for the '60s, so we can have Redford and Newman as Luke and Han.
