i think the costuming in TFA is really wonderful in that it's actually somewhat reserved (and hence very Star Warsy to me).

some of the things that immediately struck me:
    1. once Finn is out of the stormtrooper costume and into Poe's jacket, he vaguely calls to mind Luke's award ceremony look on Yavin: dark clothes, light jacket.
    2. Rey's clothes are very reminiscent of young Luke on Tatooine. part of that is just practicality for living in the desert, but the staff and speeder are also takes on Luke's old red ride and his crazy long rifle.
    3. the costume designer talked about using very shiny highly processed materials for the FO and more natural fibers for the Resistance and Rey. Kylo Ren's costume is natural fiber that's been lacquered to look shiny. how's that for a cue to his personality?
    4. Leia's dress at the end is dark blue. she's worn her "uniform" throughout until then. is this change to celebrate the small victory or to mourn the death of Han? or both?
the costumes in the PT were glorious, but way overblown in my opinion. some of them were really cool, but they didn't really add personality to the characters or seem terribly practical, whereas i felt the opposite with the OT and TFA

other thoughts? what's your favorite design?

Well the PT was "a more civilized age" that had all those crazy outfits for a reason to literally show that .

i can kind of see that for Naboo and Coruscant. but it still felt overdone to me and made it hard for the principal characters to stand out visually in any meaningful way. again: they're very nice costumes, but they don't support the storytelling well in my opinion.

I think Anakin's robes stood out and so did Palpatine'z posse and of course Pad e's clothes except for the end of ROTS on Mustafsf .

I liked Rey's costume it reminded of Anakin & Shimi's slave robes.

i did like Anakin's last outfit. it was a nice reflection of Luke's in ROTJ, but flashier. Padme's last outfit on Mustafar was a travesty. hahaha

    yes!

and i really loved how light and flexible her ensemble was. she was never weighed down or hampered in her motion by her clothes.

Rey's outfit, aside from looking really cool, looks like something that a poor girl living in the desert would wear. And yes, it's obviously reminiscent of both Anakin's slave outfit in TPM and Luke's farmboy outfit in ANH.

Her outfit at the end actually reminds me of Luke's outfit from ESB, with some Han Solo-aesthetics thrown in (the vest, and the way that she holsters the blaster that he gave her most of all).

And the costume has alot of layers. The obvious reason might be practicality ( heat- retention) but also style. I especially liked to hood and shawl, it has a very modern look to it- and reminds me of those extremely oversized infinity scarfs.

Ok, can't remember her name, but the female spy in Maze's castle was my least favorite design. Just didn't seem like star wars, more like Harley-Quinne

Give how self-sufficient she is, I imagine that she both made them herself, and repaired them over the years as well.
