Still a rumor and nothing more.

    I'm not talking about a recast, I'm talking about a stand-in.

I’m with @Trev. I think they will use the health issues Leia was left with after her space “flight” and address her passing that way. The book described her weakness in some detail, which left me in no doubt this was how Carrie’s death was going to be dealt with. It makes sense. Leia will not be strong enough to fight anymore and Poe is there to take her place.

That is a good point, but you could also say that it is more like being strong-willed rather than just giving up. Numerous assassination attempts are made against Padme as well as other forms of danger, but none of those ever succeeded. Padme will only die on her own terms.

This is a bit cheesy, but you could say the only person strong enough to kill Padme was Padme.

Because if something isn't stupid to the point of offensive enough the first time then try, try again.

Leia should be recast, I'm so sick of the dialog that is essentially how best to flush the goldfish so "we" don't have to think about anymore.

Lucas never confirmed that Padme died of a broken heart.

RotS simply never explained why she did die, only gives hints.

Leia wouldn't just lose the will to live. Most likely she would die because all of this stress, tragedy and being thrown into space would ruin her health so much, that she would just succumb to her many wounds.

    That is some hyperbole...

I feel that Leia would fight till the end, recast or not.

I never understood the antagonism towards Padme's 'losing the will to live' or dying of a broken heart. Star Wars is a fairy tale, and that's the kind of thing that can happen in a fairy tale.

Besides, it's not like it's unprecedented even in the real world - it's called Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (aka broken heart syndrome). And talk about life imitating art: it got reported that it's what happened to Debbie Reynolds, Carrie's real mother.

Anyway, irrespective of all that, I don't think it would be a particularly satisfactory way of presenting Leia's off-screen passing.

Back to the topic - I believe Disney have already ruled out both a digital Leia and and recasting (which I thing is the right thing to do), so my first thought is to agree that her death should be mentioned in the opening crawl

Following that, perhaps first main scene could be devoted to memorial service in her name, with the lighting of torches and maybe a speech or two.

However, what I think might work better is to indicate in the opening crawl that she is away on a mission. Then at some point during the first act a lone survivor of that mission could return, who relates through dialogue the fate of Leia on that mission.

I think doing something along those lines, with a performer relating the tale rather than just a few world in the crawl, it would give the off-screen moment more gravitas. It would be much more emotionally involving and satisfying for us and future audiences.

We get an in-story death without ever actually seeing that death, and would be a far better conclusion to her story than just text at the start.

Like mother like daughter? To lose the will to live....

    "Uber, Uber."
Why did the medical droid call for an Uber? Do Uber go to Tatooine and Alderaan?!

And how did Leia remember her mother?
Leia: "Very beautiful, Kind, but sad."

I see only two options, and one of those options may not even exist.

If there is enough footage of Fisher as Leia left over from the last 2 films to cobble together and rework into a sequence where she is on a ship that is destroyed so that she is killed off. Looking back in hindsight the best place for Leia's demise would have been the scene where her ship was destroyed in TLJ. She should have died there with Ackbar. Not anyone's fault because nobody knew Fisher would pass so suddenly and tragically of course, but THAT would have been the place to do it. Unfortunately they couldn't edit TLJ that way because she was tied to the end of the movie and that fateful final reunion with Luke. But if there is enough footage of her left over they could create a scene like that for an opening battle in IX. And let her death become the story for Poe in that movie, since his story is becoming one about him rising to the call of leadership.

The other is the safe option, which is to inform the audience of her passing between movies in the opening crawl. That is the likeliest and probably the best option.

I don't want to see her recast with another actress or done with CGI. R1 pulled it off, but it was a young Fisher and she uttered ONE word. In and out, quick. They couldn't do that in IX. And a new actress would offend me so much that my head might explode.

She seemed pretty happy at the end of the movie. She lost her husband, son and brother but she had everything she needs.
