I remember asking this over at the TFN a while ago but thought I would ask this here as well, do you think Luke would have had enough strength/will-power to stand the Emperor and deny joining the dark side in ANH?

We all know the scene in ROTJ where after Luke had bested Vader in their duel then the Emperor asks Luke take his place at his father's side. Luke then stands up, throws away his lightsaber, and says "No, Your Highness, I am a Jedi like my father before." Then the Emperor gets ticked off and says "So be it, Jedi." and shoots Force lighting at him.
My question is, would he have been able to do that in ANH with so little training in the Force or would he have just done it for power?

Do you remember when you asked it here last October?

It is a good question but you don't have to post it twice. :)

Also, I realize you may be dealing with translation issues, but the original English quote is actually "Never. I'll never turn to the Dark Side. You've failed, your Highness. I am a Jedi, like my father before me."

Well, the question is: Why would he not be able to resist? I don't remember any time that Luke had any desire for Power ...
Han - on the other side... :p

It would be unwise to underestimate the Emperor (emperor)

Well the reason he wouldnt deny the emperor was because of how sheltered he was growing up and he ddnt mind the emperor and even wanted to join the academy before having his eyes opened

mmmmh, I always thought that the main goal was just to escape from Owen Lars. Joining the academy like all my friends was a pretext, I think. Any other pretext that would have justified to send him as far as possible, would have been a good pretext to say to Uncle Owen. :)

What shocks Luke, and pushes him to take that decision to be a Jedi, is - I think - when he cuts Vader's hand.
He makes the parallel with his proper hand.
That parallel leads him further, and makes him understand that he's walking right in the footsteps of his father : mechanical right hand - like him, jedi powers - like him, anger - like him... and he realizes, if he continues, he will finish ... like him...
To me, this is the thing that makes him stop the duel, and stand in front of the Emperor.
I'm not sure he would have been strong enough in his head, earlier, by the time of ANH, to do so.

No, Luke didn't have enough of an understanding of power in A New Hope that I think he wouldn't be able to resist the Emperor's offer. I think that Vader may have even been able to convince Luke to join the dark side if he had no escape in Empire. Imagine being in Luke shoes in the moment that he learns his father's true identity and being so full of doubt. Obi Wan, the person who he thought was his ally had lied to him and his real father was one of the most powerful individuals in the galaxy That would have to sound appetizing

mmmmmmh.... the question is located "by the time of ANH" ; by the time of ANH, Luke still believes his father was betrayed and killed by Vader : I'm not sure he would have been receptive to the Dark Lord... my2cents
Per contra, it would have been easier for the Emperor to force Luke to kill Vader, his father's murderer. Once the Dark Lord dead, the Emperor could have "carelessly" tell the truth to Luke, screwing him in the Dark Side by learning he killed his real father and not his father's murderer.
