It's always a somewhat bittersweet occasion around here when a new Star Wars film comes out. On the one hand, we have a new movie, and that's cause for celebration. A brand new toy has been delivered for us to enjoy. On the other hand, the forum overnight turns from one of hope-springs-eternal speculation of what surprises we might find under the Christmas tree to immediately becoming forever the day after Christmas. Rather than playing with our toys and enjoying them for what they are, we endlessly pick and prod and critique them and talk about how things would have been better if we got the exact toy we wanted. It's a bummer, man.

Give it a week or so for folks to chill out. A lot of this is knee-jerk reaction with little context even being considered. Some will still be angry, but I'd bet that a lot of the angry crowd will simmer down a bit.

    This is completely true.

In fact, given everything about the film, I’m surprised that so many people (critics included in this) are willing to align themselves with a certain opinion already, be it good or bad. This film - I think, anyways - has way too many layers for one to come to a reasonable conclusion after just one showing.

I said it before the film’s release, and I’m surprised at just how true this really is: this film pretty much demands a second viewing, so even if some of us don’t feel good enough to pay more money to see the film again in cinemas and just wait for the home release, I really would question trusting your gut reaction above all else with this film.

Because, either way, this is unlike any SW film that we’ve seen before.

I second that. In fact I felt a little bit disappointed just after the movie but I appreciate it more and more. The fact is that this movie is PACKED with informations and storylines while being extremely tense and challenging story-wise. 24 hours later, I can see the tone in my comment history changing progressively. Maybe, this is how ESB was received when it was released.

EDIT : 5 days later. I had another viewing in between and guess what ? I love this story so much. Really.

With all due respect, but a movie is not a toy. And the release of something new isn't automatically the cause of a celebration. By saying this you intentionally or unintentionally giving you the benefit of the doubt deflect all discussion... and THAT is what a forum and art (in this case a movie) is for. Discuss, discuss, discuss no matter in which direction. Mindless following the "joy"...not so much. See.. there you have a discussion already. Lightsaber deflect it.

it was received like this, though ESB was less loved by critics.

So many new faces in the Cantina. Arm chair critics armed with negativity. A pale reflection of the actual audience response and critical reception.

I understand what you are saying, but I guess we can do both... I loved the film despite some things I was hoping for... And I agree, that if it was not for my own expectations the movie would be even better for myself... but this is Star Wars, we love to pick everything apart, we all have our own expectations, but no matter if you like or hate this movie, in the end, we all love the imaginary created both by the movies, and by ourselves...

I see your point. I have no problem with discussion, or heck, even constructive criticism. However, hypercriticism and extreme negativity are an issue amongst fans that I'd argue kills the magic.

Nevertheless, in my original post I'm mostly highlighting the ennui caused by the absence of anticipation and building excitement after a film's release. There's a noticeable shift in mood around here when it happens. Like the air being let out of a balloon.

I can't even step foot in the Finn thread. Not even for a civil discussion. It is madness.

You are right about that. Won't argue with it, I believe it is caused by a "self-hype" around those films.

Finn did get shafted in terms of screen time and plot revelance. He and Rose's arc is basically Comic relief central, with some foreshadow nuggets thrown in (boy in stables etc.) at least he achieved more than her by killing Phasma, but that was it.

But the people in the Finn thread are acting like they expected him to be force sensitive and be the main character, and are arguing relentlessly about it.

On my thoughts about the thread topic, I'm seeing the film in less than an hour so will form my own opinion about it. Thought I think that it will be even more polarising than TFA, and people just need time to process this film like after that film.

I'm sorry, but no matter what Finn's character was/is in TLJ the ridiculousness in the Finn thread is childish. I had no problem with him in TFA. He wasn't Jar Jar that is just stupid.

People today are a. spoiled by the fact that they get a new Star Wars film yearly, plus comics, novels, etc. and b. thanks to the internet, every Tom/Dick/Harry gets a chance to put their opinion out there, but in order to get traction, you can't be lukewarm. You need to bloviate, and that is what most of these knuckleheads are doing, bloviating.

Yep. I don't know how so many of these people can claim to have seen it. It doesn't come out until this evening. My wife and I are seeing it tomorrow morning, and I can't wait.

Heck, most of these folks were probably complaining in October when it was revealed RJ would not direct episode IX, and it went to JJ. Now they are complaining that RJ destroyed Star Wars. Just insane.

I'm not accepting their level of arguing. They are going way overboard IMO. I'm just saying my before film opinion on Finn's arc in TLJ.

TFA he had a good arc.

I only know it released a few days early in Europe. I'm seeing it today.

I agree and I understand. But now it is impossible to even go in there and just have a conversation after I see it tonight. The negativity will just ruin it. Btw, I have no problem with criticism from people, about Finn, but in that thread it is on a whole 'nother kind of level.

I think the criticism is going to get worse over time. Once people begin to process what they saw, they are going to start thinking about how this story fits into the entire Star Wars universe. Say what you will, but the Skywalkers at the end were completely used by the force in the most negative ways with only a little bit of hope in between. The rest has been crap for them, and unfortunately there is no one left to correct that. That is sad. When it is all said and done the force was the worse thing the Skywalkers could have ever had.

Jaded glasses of cynicism will only sour the world for you.

Constructive criticism is always the best.

They exist in every fandom. And usually ruin it for everyone else somehow.

Based off my experiences in various fandoms and putting up with idiots; who lashed out when a ship didn't become canon or a character they liked didn't fit their exact head canon plan for them.

More like choices. I wouldn't say the force was bad for them. It's what you do with it that carves your path. Just like anything
