I'm still reeling from the tragic death of Carrie Fisher (not to mention her mother Debbie Reynolds, not to mention George Michael, not to mention Alan Thicke...), but looking forward, it seems to me that there are only two options for Episode IX. One is to give Leia an anti-climactic, off-screen death (maybe in the opening crawl), which would be a major disappointment for everyone who has followed her storyline from the beginning, plus it might also cause some major rewrites that could cheapen the story.

The other option is to recreate Leia with recasting and/or CGI. After seeing R1, I'm convinced that they have the technology to do this - but the problem is that people would likely find it extremely tasteless and offensive.

I may be in the minority here, but I always thought the ST was a bad idea, retelling a story that was already finished. In spite of this, I made every effort to approach TFA with an open mind, and I still found it disappointing. Movie studios have shown an increasing willingness to just give up on a series when it clearly isn't working (for example, Superman Returns or The Amazing Spider-Man). So here's a wild idea on how to handle Episode IX: Just don't make it.

They could still release an official novelization to conclude the storyline, and then Leia can live on in your imagination. But if they actually make the movie, it is now virtually guaranteed to be a disappointment.

This is a crazy idea for a lot of reasons.
    Number one being, money.

Hey here's 2+ billion dollars. Just don't take it. Seriously. Don't take it.

Don't kid yourself. You're taking that money.

IX will not be cancelled, because VIII would be the 'middle trilogy' film without an ending. There are two realistic choices.

    1. Recast Leia with an actress of a similar look and age - just for IX if Leia is required. (Who knows, Leia might be killed in VIII anyway?)
    2. A fully CGI Episode IX? Everything and everyone is CGI. No continuity problems and Billie Lourd could voice Leia's role as a tribute, if Leia is even part of IX.

    ;)

I agree with @SKB ,Leia may be recast by someone else. This has worked many times with other film series, such as Michael Gambon replacing Richard Harris and Paul Walker replaced by his brother. As mentioned they could use CGI as they did in Rogue One, but people may not like this as the character may look too fake.

Yet of course Carrie Fisher is linked with this character for 39 years. So they may not have her appear on screen for episode 9, but mention her dying and have a funeral after the climax of the film.

Why stop at 9? Why not cancel 8 too? I assume 8 is in post-production at this point, but they couldn't have spent more than.....what, $100-150 million? They'd save about 50-100 millions by just letting it go now. It's not like these movies have an audience or any real chance of making a profit.
Also, let me say this: I hope all the members of my family will stop enjoying their lives if I die right now. They're nothing without me anyway. Yes I know it sounds very inconsiderate, but this is how I feel and I have the right to express my opinion.

I do understand where you're coming from, it's hard to think about Star Wars without Carrie Fisher. But there's no way IX will be cancelled. I highly doubt the plans for it remain unchanged, though. I expect re-writes, or CGI. This is still hard for me to think about, as we are talking about the loss of real people, not an on-screen character. But inevitably, you have to wonder how they are going handle this.

Maybe it's just me being biased, but I don't see Leia being re-cast for a couple reasons. Maybe by that time, 3 years from now, people will be a little less resistant to the idea, but it just doesn't seem like something Lucasfilm would do.
    • To me, there are certain "untouchable" things about the Star Wars franchise (which has undoubtedly made it one of, if not the single-most, successful franchise in film history) and re-casting an OT "Big 3" character is one of them. If the character of Leia is to continue on in the SW films, I expect Lucasfilm to spend the money and use CGI to do it right, and to "honor" Carrie's memory by letting her own this character.
    • Again, being biased, but it would cheapen the character. Maybe Leia and Luke see each other again in XIII for the first time in years. Crazy emotional scene, right? Or, maybe that doesn't happen til IX. If that scene happens between Luke (Hamill) and Leia (not Fisher) then it just doesn't work for me. Same with any potential redemption of Ben Solo and the ensuing reunion with his mother. I'm sorry, but in my humble opinion Leia is Carrie Fisher, and Carrie Fisher is Leia. To try to make it work with someone else would be a huge mistake.

I also want to say, I don't expect Leia to die in Ep. VIII. I didn't even before this happened, and I still don't now. Besides, I think it would be in poor taste. If something tragic would have happened to Harrison Ford after shooting but before TFA released, would you have wanted to see that scene between him and Ben? If you tell me yes, I'll be taking you off my Christmas Card list. That's just not right. I couldn't handle watching something like that, knowing Ford was no longer with us. The same now goes for Fisher.

And as to how to handle Leia's part in IX, I really don't know.. hard to go there right now. It all depends on what Lucasfilm had planned for Leia's story, but I think the best possible solution would be to cut part of CF's scenes and save them for IX. Stretch what she did for one film into two. I really hope that she had some substantial screentime in VIII, and it wasn't a Luke-like scenario from TFA.

Personally I have always hoped that Leia's role in the ST was going to expand greatly after TFA. And now I hope that more than ever. Hopefully, she plays a very large part in Ep. VIII, and we have something great to remember her by.

Cgi evolves tenfold every year practically with new developments so by 2018/2019 it would have come much further than tarkin...I remember reading an article a number of years ago about future advancements in Vfx that said that they will one day not only be able to creat photorealistic interpretations of dead people but they will be able to create their voices for full movies using vocal libraries and I think Carrie Fisher's will be easier since LFL has her vocal patterns from 5 different movies.

James Earl Jones already recorded a vocal library for Lucasfilm I believe.
Many voice actors for video games create voice libraries for developers so they can add the required grunts groans and other oddities you may not think of as "dialogue" when penning a script.

Carrie and her mother have been in show business for more decades than we can remember.

The show goes on. And I'm sure Carrie Fisher would have something more witty and colorful to say than any of us. I think we can tribute her by taking everything with a twinge of irony and a smile on our face, no matter what they do.

I don't feel like people exactly understood my point. I know Disney will never actually cancel IX, because it is a cash cow. I was speaking hypothetically to suggest, "What if they actually decided to care more about the story and Carrie's memory, instead of just milking it for money"? That's why I called it a "crazy" idea.

I get you. But you are putting forth as fact that they don't actually care for the story, which I don't believe to be the case. I understand that your being against the idea of a sequel trilogy from the start doesn't exactly set you up in with a positive mindset about such things, but there are other points of view on this; namely that not only is the story being cared for, but it's also being enjoyed by many.

Besides, we don't have a clue what the story actually is. It's impossible to make any sort of judgement about whether any changes made to it are positive or negative right now.

well, even then you are operating under the strange assumption Carrie would want them to stop. Which, if you've read about her life is more than likely the furthest thing from reality. If anything her only wish would for them to give Leia a General's death. Allow her to die like the hero Leia is.

I was not expecting such a negative reaction. I think it would be best if I withdraw the question.

It's a strong debate. It's a fair question to ask.
A negative reaction is not an indicator of a bad question or one that needs withdrawn.

Yeah, I think that overall, Fischer's family should have some say in how Leia is handled in the future. But consider this- isn't it rather pessimistic to think that continuing the series is nothing more than a "cash cow"? Believe it or not, the ST isn't being made specifically for SegNerd. Many of us enjoy these films, and I think it's safe to assume that Carrie herself was glad to be back in them. Just because you personally do not like them does not mean that they're not of value to the lore, nor that they aren't part of Fischer's legacy that she'd be proud of.

I agree, by 2018 the technology would be greatly improved. I also read that Hollywood makes a photo library of all actors so what we saw in Rogue One was possible.

yeah it's more recent then we think because of the mocap advancements. However, I still dont think that would make leia a central figure like some are thinking but they would pull a tarkin with a bit more screentime. I do hope they take risks, even working with weta if they have to. but cancelling ix out right? meh, me no think so.

While I am not a huge fan of TFA just like you, I really see no reason why they should cancel episode 9. I dare say that this would be insulting to Carrie Fisher's memory instead of a way of honoring it. Sure, TFA was not great and to our liking but what's to say that the saga wont get any better? While I love the PT, I have to remind you that after having seen Jar Jar with all his poop and fart glory, many fans felt the same way you are feeling right now and they wondered if it was worth it for Lucas to make more movies after that. Then AOTC came out and it had almost no Jar Jar, Bounty Hunters, a huge scale Jedi battle, the awesomeness of seeing Yoda fight for the very first time and sand! No forget that last one.

I too was greatly disappointed by TFA but I don't loose hope that many things will get better. Take Kylo Ren and Rey for instance, while one was just a crybaby Vader wannabe and the other was a full scale Mary Sue, I have high hopes that these characters are going to be improved upon and Kylo may be turned into a force to be recond with and Rey's character be more balanced and less overpowered. One of the things that has hurt the prequels is how many fans troll and bash just for the sake of it so I ask you to try and not fall in this camp and lets give the next two movies a chance and not hate them without even having seen them.

This may come as a surprise and even be considered blasphemy by many SW fans but when I was a little kid, after having my mind blown away by ANH, I was a bit disappointed by TESB and didn't like it as much. Sure I still loved the movie but to me it was weak compared the ANH. That however didn't ruin the hype of wanting to see ROTJ and I was pleased that it was everything I wanted from a SW movie. So why want the saga to get cancelled just because one movie didn't live up to our standards?
