I feel some are jumping the gun without knowing the plot of VIII, or how much she was involved plus other factors.

EP9 we know nothing of how much she was involved at all.

I think it will be Ok, and it will be all figured out.

    Agreed.
If i remember well some leaked photos are from a funeral or something like that. If i'm right producers said Carrie was in IX, but who knows.

A CGI character with a small part it's not a bad idea (like Tarkin, in dark scenes, hiding the little cgi imperfections).

Or a death like Oliver Reed in Gladiator, from the back, honoring Carrie's job.

There's a lot to do in LucasFilms right now.

I thought that the funeral would have been for Han.
I would think by the time 9 comes, the CGI wouldn't need to be hidden as the tech could improve. So the character can have a larger part. I hope.

there are a number of ways this can be handled. actors dying while filming is not a new problem to hollywood. when Heath Ledger died, they could have shelved his final film because so much of it had not been finished, but Terry Gilliam decided to recast it with multiple actors and make the visual change part of the fantasy. it works and it allowed Ledger's fans to see him one last time. Oliver Reed, Brandon Lee were filmed using doubles from behind (most of Lee's role was finished, Reed's character was trimmed a bit as a result).

they are not recasting Chekov in the Star Trek movies, but i don't believe they're killing his character either.

i seriously hope they don't kill Leia because Carrie died. i don't feel that would be a fitting tribute.
she deserves a happy ending in the story after everything she has suffered.

I mean, the release is like 3 years away, and I'd imagine they'd want to really perfect that CGI before committing to it- so I'd give them about two years to make a decision. I don't know if the tech could improve that drastically in that amount of time- some, sure, but remember how picky people were about Tarkin? Well, I'd imagine it's going to be an even much tougher crowd with Fischer's Leia, given the circumstances and the fact that her character was such an icon.

many of us are now thinking how this will effect the story in IX, it feels "wrong" to speculate this close to the tragedy, so I am glad someone brought it up :) (& I am sure Carrie wants her character to live on or get an epic ending)

I would rather not have them CGI her, but there are two ways they could make CGI work without looking dodgy:

    1: ForceGhost (not likely)

2: Hologram !!! This is ALMOST our first introduction to her in Star Wars, The first time we hear her speak more than just being zassy to Darth Vader is when the whole holorecording is played to Luke. As a kid this is what many people remember as the introduction to Leia, since the hologram was so memorable :) it could be very fitting/poetic if the last we see of her is a flickering blue holorecording & if they do that, they can hide some of the CGI-flaws better..... (Was there a rumour of her being captured/hold prisoner???) If so: new messages could come from her throughout the movie

I know it sounds cold but kill her off in VIII in a heroic way. Then maybe in 9 we see her 1 last time as a hologram.

No, I meant what it the writers had already decided to kill off Leia as a character during VIII even before the tragic death of Carrie Fisher? One character per Sequel Trilogy episode. Han went in VII, Leia to go in VIII and finally Luke in IX. End of the OT trio and free to develop the new cast in a possible 4th trilogy (X, XI, XII)

Yes, I thought too. Is what rumors said i suppouse.
But honestly, Han's death for me it's passed, his death was dark and sad and great. He was a great and loved character but I think it's not necessary to remeber him in the next movie (slowing down the story). The events are moving forward. The connection was made in TFA. Probably this dark funeral scene from 8 is from some kind of royalty member. It's cold but now i think it would be perfect to be the great final Leia deserves.

    I thought the same.
It's also interesting where the events will go after IX. Too much to tell. Love it.

I had been assuming that this wouldn't happen because Colin Trevorrow had already stated that he expected Leia to have a substantial role in IX. If they could come up with a reasonably tasteful way to make it happen, it could work.

I think they should recast her, but have her disfigured and possibly wearing a mask. Think about it, there's a history of characters being disfigured and wearing masks - it would have a certain resonance. I'm sure they could tweak the ending of episode 8 so that she's injured and then have her in the mask in episode 9.

It's not a crazy idea, and I'm genuinely grateful you asked and that everyone here hasn't bombarded you with insults. It's great to see everyone's different take on answering you even if the consensus has been opposed to canceling episode 9. :)

I'm feeling kinda stupid that this never crossed my mind - it's a great 'get out' for the production without resorting to CGI (which it's been suggested LFL wouldn't do) or recasting (which would feel like a bit of an insult). This way Leia can still feature in IX with the film allowing her the dignity of gradually stepping back from the front line without having to resort to just killing off a character as the only way of ending their link to the core story narrative.
