Reputable film reporter Jeff Sneider is reporting that Damon Lindelof, the mind behind HBO's Watchmen miniseries and The Leftovers, is working on a new Star Wars movie. He posted the news on Twitter, linking to his story on The Ankler, which is behind a pay-wall.

According to Sneider, Lindelof would be writing the project, though he can't say if there is a co-writer or a director attached. While there are not many details, Lindelof's name certainly came out of left field, especially for a movie project. Lucasfilm has mostly been focused on 'TV' projects lately, with only three films announced in the near future. In fact, the next one in the pipeline, Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron, reportedly ran into some problems last year. The film is still scheduled to come out in December 2023.

Lindelof is very well known to TV fans, as he co-created Lost with another Star Wars alum, J. J. Abrams, and created The Leftovers. He was also the showrunner of HBO's Watchmen miniseries, and wrote eight of its nine episodes. To date, he has won three Emmy Awards. On the movie side, his resumé includes Prometheus, Star Trek: Into Darkness, Tomorrowland, and the 2020 movie The Hunt. He was a co-writer in most of those projects, though.

Besides Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron, Disney is scheduled to release two new Star Wars movies, in December of 2025 and 2027. Taika Waititi is co-writing and directing one, and Kevin Feige is planning to executive produce another, which will be written by Michael Waldron.

We will keep you posted as more information comes to light on Lindelof's movie.

I enjoyed the HBO Watchmen series and Prometheus. I hope he does a good job for the Star Wars franchise, although I enjoyed Prometheus some fans feel like he ruined the Alien franchise… anywho looking forward to his take.

The Alien franchise is far from ruined, but Prometheus was pretty poorly written, as far as I can say. It has some good visuals, though. Anyway, Watchmen was pretty darn good. Personally, I'm looking forward to Lindelof's story in the GFFA :)

I loved the Watchmen series and Leftovers was ok, but have to concur that Lindelof's cinematic ventures have been weak. Don't start me on Prometheus

    Prometheus. What a wasted opportunity.
