Who here liked the Netflix Daredevil series?

I loved it and the fact it will spawn Iron First and even a Cumberbatch cameo as Doctor Strange makes me very happy. The rumor that many of the Netflix characters (including DD himself) become Avengers in Avengers 4, makes also very happy.

Is there a template for SW here? I happen to think the Anthology films aren't going to work, but I do think a solid SW Netflix series could be amazing. I realize there are budgetary issues here, but I see that as a blessing in disguise. With less money for special effects in each episode, a Netflix series could focus more on characters, stage fighting and a solid script.

You could also stage the next set of film characters through the series like Marvel plans to do.

Imagine a very dark series with a Moff Tarkin like central character providing the central viewpoint of the film. He could start out as just a Captain and demonstrate how he rises to Admiral in the first season. You could take up the story of the pirates in Maz's cantina, you could throw in a Billy Dee Williams cameo or a few scenes with Judi Dench as Mon Mothma (or better yet a Caroline Blakiston cameo).

I don't want a cartoon either. I want the opposite of a cartoon, I want a sinister, deep, dark series.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a good idea? It would not surprise me if I was. :)

I don't see Star Wars ever going Daredevil dark. Its not in the Star Wars DNA. At some level it has to remain an adventure and not go too grim. I think there can be a balance though. A certain level of edge and nastiness that stays within a recognizable Star Wars feel.

That being said, I think SW is a good fit for Netflix and a number of intertwining series that relate to each other over a couple of years sounds like it would be a great idea in the SW universe.

Point taken, the blood porn and torture porn in DD are not going to work, but something as dark as Empire could, I think. You could even go a little darker, but still no blood porn.

I'm dreaming, I know, but someone within the brand has to be looking at this, given the surging popularity of binge parties and series like House of Cards, given even mediocre sitcoms are finding new life with Yahoo and finding success and given more and more of us have dumped our cable and satellite dishes and look almost exclusively for on-demand media, I would wager there's an opportunity here.

I'd go with a Cantina concept, a bar at crux of the war/resistance, a civil war or fight for territory going on near the Cantina, a raw template derived from Casablanca. Replace the Nazis in Casablanca with the Hutt if you need a villain, but it really could be any <STAR WARS VILLAIN HERE>. Anyway, the action all centers around this Cantina and a conflict where characters on both sides frequent the tavern.

Nobody wear's the allegiance on their sleeve. Intrigue. Spies. Assassinations, all through the perspective of a rough and tumble "hive of scum and villainy". You could even have guest stars this way. Consider maybe one episode Phasma comes to the Cantina for reason X and that appearance then introduces another First Order character that you are told appears in Episode IX. That's fantasy, I know, but it demonstrates how easily the series could be written, adapt easily as new writers came in and also be used as a simple vehicle to market your films.

Heck you could have Peter Mayhew film three short scenes for one episode in the Cantina and it would go through the roof.

I'm just reading now how Marvel is doubling down on Netflix series after the success of Daredevil and DC and Hulu were once rumored to be close to a big announcement (since discredited), so it appears like a money maker, but provides license to take Star Wars in a direction entirely unique from the films and cartoons.

I'm sure someone brighter than me at Disney has thought of this and is exploring their options.

EDIT - changed DC+Hulu to rumor, since discredited

I hope this wasn't a knock on my beloved Community. :p

But back to the topic at hand. Outside of the actual violence, I was referring to the darkness more in the themes. I doubt very much we'll see a SW show dealing with idea like murder as a just form of punishment or the inherant violence and "evil" in those who intend to protect the innocent. There are some pretty dark ideas in Daredevil.

Could we see a more palatable and friendly darkness like an ESB? Absolutely. I just think in the end it will need to have relatable audience surrogates as heroes (likely not anti-hero based shows) and an underlying sense of adventure and a feeling that there is definable good and evil in the galaxy. This isn't to say no shades of gray (and no I'm not talking S&M fan fiction) or that there can't be deeper questions of morals and costs of "good" actions. But just that, with SW, i think no matter what the question, the answer has to side with the "light side" of the force (the philosophy not the jedi religion) or risk throwing the established universe out of whack.

I love Community, but yeah that was the reference. I identify so much with Abed I am convinced Harmon owes me royalties.

I still like a Casablanca style template. Casablanca isn't too dark for Star Wars, the film is rated PG I think. People get shot, there's a lot of intrigue, but there's heroes, the cause of freedom (liberty, sanctity of life) is prevalent, which I think is a key element. Dark, but it could still be on Network TV and it's still Star Wars. The main "anti-hero" could even be a Rick template if you want. Rick's journey in Casablanca is pretty damn heroic to me.

You have a lot more action of course, but in term of setting and mood, it seems "wretched hive of scum and villainy" describes a lot of scenes in IV and VI.

We've seen Darth Maul as a spider folks. There's room to grow from that low. :)

I'm convinced there's a 20 to 30 something crowd that would eat up a good Star Wars Netflix and that crowd is a prime target for both Star Wars and Netflix. But I have no real clue as to the idea's viability. None.

I think Netflix would be the perfect place to resurrect the long-shelved Underworld series: a seedy show about bounty hunters, scum, and other villainy that tells smaller stories not always connected to the larger narrative of the movies.

Also, chiming in with more love for Community!! We got our 6 seasons, now we just need #AndAMovie!!
