    Hi everyone,

I’m going to attempt a dark side backstory to TFA by synthesizing various speculations from other forum members, some spoilers, and recently divulged info from the new books (such as the Acolytes of the Beyond and their interest in Vader artifacts, and Sidious’ hunt for dark side origins beyond the galaxy).

    Here we go:

At some point in the distant past, a dark side practitioner from beyond the galaxy arrives in the Star Wars galaxy we know and establishes the Sith order.

In the PT and OT era, Sidious secretly collects and trains force-sensitive children to be adult envoys he sends out into the unmapped parts of the galaxy and beyond, searching for the origin of the dark side, so Sidious can gain greater knowledge of its secrets.

After the fall of Sidious and Vader, a remnant of the Empire retreats to a dark corner of the galaxy, similar to the Nazi contingent that regroups in Argentina after WWII. There they encounter a group called the Acolytes of the Beyond, dark side practitioners who are either 1) the force sensitive envoys of Sidious, or 2) a quasi-religious group unaffiliated with the Sith, with strong ties to the dark side origins beyond the galaxy, or 3) a mix of both groups. Regardless, this group would show strong interest in the legend of Vader, and would also have knowledge of dark side secrets unknown to Sidious.

Within the Acolytes of Beyond is a more esoteric, exclusive and militant group called the Knights of Ren. Think of these as 33 degree Masons, who have greater power and knowledge than the rest of the Masonic order. For example, the Acolytes would be aware of the power of Kyber crystals as conduits of the force, and would know how to harness the power of a crystal-core planet as a weapon capable of destroying entire planetary systems, but only the Knights would have an understanding of life after death, and the dark side mechanics of resurrection. The Knights would also be aware of the true lineage of Vader, his spontaneous birth via the force, and that the Skywalker bloodline is Vader’s bloodline, while the Acolytes would just be aware that Vader wielded great dark side power, perhaps the greatest in history.

In their quest to reestablish a galactic system of order founded on dark side tenets, the Knights seek to summon and harness the power of dark side spirits who have departed this plane. To this end, they gather artifacts that belonged to powerful dark side users from the past, but to complete their ambitious mission, they will need not just masks and lightsabers, but blood from the bloodline the force itself spawned, and perhaps a vessel…

Meanwhile, post-ROTJ, Luke has established a Jedi school. Among his students are two young Solo/Organa children. While Luke is away, the Knights appear out of the darkness and lay waste to the school. They successfully kidnap the son, but in the confusion the daughter escapes and stows away on a departing ship, or is taken and hidden away by a sympathetic 3rd party. Luke returns in great shame to find himself once again the last of the Jedi, with his sister’s children gone forever due to his negligence and dark side blindness...

Several years later, Kylo Ren, an orphan who’s risen to power within the Knights of Ren, hunts for the last Skywalker relic, the lightsaber wielded by both father and son, and encounters a scavenger on a remote planet who is surprisingly strong in the force…

Nice post. Well thought out. From a general point of view I'm not so sure I'd be on board with Luke starting a Jedi Academy only to basically have it completely destroyed. I would think that the 3 force ghosts would be attuned to a higher level of the force and be able to forewarn Luke of an impending danger. But, ultimately if it fits within a great story then I'm all for it.

Yeah that's really a second-layer of speculation based on the image of a hooded Luke from the trailer next to burning embers, and the rumor that he's been in seclusion or missing for several years (and some spoiler reports). I agree it would need to play into some larger story arc to support the first-layer of speculation here -- i.e. the force ghosts let this happen so the new dark side threat (Knights of Ren, First Order) could be adequately challenged later (Luke and Rey etc would need to go through certain personal catastrophes in order to be conditioned in such a way they could successfully combat the emerging threat).

i don't think there's any reason the force ghosts would have warned Luke. The only reason ben shows up in the OT is so he can finish what he started in giving like the training he needs to defeat Vader. Then they all show up on endor to congratulate him. After that though I think they would have gone back to being one with force with the rest of the Jedi who die.

I am fully on board with this. The film may end up being slightly different, but I think you nailed it.

I could see parts of that post holding up to scrutiny with the ST.
I STILL say at some point, the true main villian, (cough) Darth (cough) Plaguis will be revealed.
    ;)
DP could link all nine Star Wars films together.
I think there might be a link between Snoke & Yoda that somehow involves DP.
    (yoda)
Yoda seemed to have a very odd and strained relationship with the Skywalkers in my view.
I think Yoda knew more about the Skywalker linage & family than what we saw in the films.
I also question why GL was so vehement about Yoda never having any novels, stories or comics.
Why the shrouded mystery of a 976 year old being?

What would be a good way to link Snoke and Yoda? Obviously it can't be a master/apprentice thing as this was already explored with Dooku.

That maybe & I mean maybe Yoda and Snoke were found or selected based on midicloians or they were both Jedi at the same time then Snoke went rogue, like Dooku.
I don't really think they are related or the same race but Lucas kept Yoda's back ground from being explored & there might be a reason.

I think too in the OT, Yoda sensed evil and conflict with DP NOT Vader. He knew as his death drew near he would need to rely on Luke to eventually vanquish Darth Plaguis in order to stop the Dark Side.
This is partly why Yoda told Obi-wan to conceal from Luke that Darth Vader was his real father.

I'm actually one of those annoying droids that agrees that Plagueis could've faked his own death (by going into some death-like slumber knowing he would "awaken" at a later date), or died knowing he would later be resurrected in spirit or corporeal form by the Accolytes or Knights. In fact, it could have been Plagueis who secretly set up the Accolyte/Knight order on the other side of the Galaxy while Sidious was preoccupied with becoming Emperor.

I''ve been on board with this line of thinking. I think DP needs to be a part of this trilogy to link it all together, and that the way things were worded from EP 3 sets it up for happening. I also do not think Snoke is DP at all, possibly Maul, or who? But snoke is not the end all bad guy in this trilogy, and just a stepping stone to the real threat that won't be revealed in ep 7.

I love the idea that Kylo and the other force users are the children of the force. It would be a nice payoff to the story seeds they have been laying down in the new Canon lately.

Anyone think they will show or mention inquisitors or Palpatine sending the imperial forces beyond the rim in Rogue One or one of the other spinoffs or in Rebels?

Being remnants of Palpatine`s machinations flows well, links the movies together with a character we know well. Much better then a name mentioned in one line of one movie

They jumped through a lot of hoops to distance themselves from the missteps taken.

@Protocol Droid, if I remember correctly the Prophets of the Dark Side were basically evil fortune tellers who were loosely affiliated with the Sith. There were 6 or 7 of them and they were led by the Supreme Prophet Kadann. Supposedly Palpatine went to them whenever he wanted to know about the future, and they foresaw the rise of Luke Skywalker, the destruction of the second Death Star, and the return of the Jedi. After Palpatine and Vader were killed the Prophets wanted to continue to work behind the scenes, but they had a vision that Palpatine's son would destroy them, so they hunted him down and imprisoned him and created a puppet regime with some guy named Triculous as the new "Emperor". All Triculous was really concerned with though was getting Leia to fall in love with him, and eventually the Prophets had to kill him and just outright take control. Luke eventually saves the day but it turns out that the Prophets weren't prophets after all, they just had hundreds of spies feeding them information and they used educated guesses to make predictions, kind of like the Wizard of Oz or something. Anyways the books were aimed at 10 to 14 year olds and that's when I read them, I loved them then but they had a LOT of problems and weren't really the best of the EU. This all took place like 6 months to 2 years after ROTJ. It makes me wonder about Snoke though. My theory is that he is the Admiral in Aftermath who was on a mission in deep space for Palpatine and who waited to the Empire was near its breaking point to come back. What if Snoke is claiming to be a force sensitive prophet while in reality he is nothing more than a very old ex-imperial? That could provide an interesting dynamic between villains, if it turns out that Snoke and the KOR are at odds with one another. Of course the most likely scenario is that Snoke himself is very force sensitive and probably the leader of the Knights of Ren, which would also be cool. One last note, the Prophets of the Dark side weren't necessarily outright violent, they were more manipulative, which reminds me of the Acolytes of the Beyond quote from Aftermath, "We are not violent, not yet". The Force Awakens got a HELL of a lot more interesting when the KOR were revealed, that's for sure.

Here they all are looking menacing. Oh yeah did a mention that they were headquartered in a floating museum in deep space? And they just happened to have collected tons of artifacts from the OT.

Apparently they collected the Ark of the Covenant (top right) and Boba Fett.

The image of Boba Fett's suit as a collectable relic lines up with that scene in Aftermath where his post-Sarlaac, acid-damaged suit makes an appearance. Not that I think they'll port the Prophets directly into TFA, but I wonder if they've mined this for content? Interesting stuff for sure. I agree TFA became more intriguing with the reveal of KOR, and the reveal of the Acolytes of the Beyond in Aftermath has me equally intrigued, as does the dark side excursions to the edge of the Galaxy. This is how you make a universe feel larger. I don't care if every single new lead character is related to somebody from the OT, as long as the structural mythology itself evolves in ways that feel fresh and dynamic.

Precisely! Introduce a new group of bad guys that are loosely tied to but not directly Sith, give them a slightly darker, secretive, and more cultish aura for our the 21st century sensibilities and you've already taken a giant step in creating the post ROTJ Galaxy. And wow about Boba Fett, that's ANOTHER tie to Aftermath. You know for all of Aftermath's numerous faults, as a synopsis, it gives us a lot of good backstory hints to chew on.

Yeah most protocol droids don't have any patience for reading fiction, and I'm no exception -- and from the various synopses of the main Aftermath narrative I've processed it doesn't look like I'm missing much -- but the "interlude" pieces of Aftermath, those specifically concerned with world-building, are very, very interesting. Planting seeds, as it were, to germinate into new, sprawling narratives. That's why I'm optimistic even if TFA ends up feeling like a nostalgic, mediocre misfire like Superman Returns. I have a lot of confidence in the Lucasfilm story group to guide the general structure and larger strategy of the SW universe. It's funny, it makes me think of that exchange in ESB where Han says "No time to discuss this as a committee" and Leia responds "I am not a committee!" But it's precisely this committee approach that seems to be working here (witness how The Clone Wars reoriented the PT elements into something meaningful), where you have a genuine synthesis of ideas that produces a synergistic effect rather than a tepid lowest common denominator product.
