The only thing I don't like about Darth Plagueis is his name. It's just unwieldy.

@Echo-07 had a great take on that in his story about Darth Plagueis.

And Darth Plagueis we learn was a Muun named “Hego Damask.” I actually wrote about this on a message board last winter as I was reading the book. This is roughly how I interpreted his name: Mythology is ALL about subtext and symbolism. Hego Damask. He got the Mask = very interesting. Damask comes from the medieval word “damaske,” which is derived from Damascus. I thought, incorrectly I guess, that damask was a type of fabric or material used in veils (form of mask) but is actually a fabric used in curtains, table clothes, or textiles. Perhaps, Plagueis is “the man behind the curtain” of course an archetype of sorts as seen in The Wizard of Oz as well as LOST (which referenced the idea as an episode title.)

If the Plagueis book is to be believed (Which before Disney sale it was canon) then Plagueis was the one to order the Clone army and it looks like he may have known the Empire would fall from his ability to see the future. So he set up Sidious to fail for trying to kill him.

I should mention as well, I read that the novel for Revenge of the Sith explicitly states Plagueis is the one to cheat death.

It looks as though he knew the Empire would fail and when the time was right he'd try to take control of the galaxy and destroy the Jedi and New Republic. He waited years because, he was building up his own legion of Sith.

This could explain why the remnants of the Empire would join up with the New Republic. They felt used in a deeper plot. They'll most likely be tension in the beginning but, I could see them gradually feeling the need to work together to destroy Plagueis and his legion.

Especially if it's to be believed Luke has been in exile. It could explain a limited number of Jedi to fight this threat and needing to work together to defeat it.

    This is interesting.

Sidious later recounted the tale as The Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise—an "old Sith legend"—to sway Anakin Skywalker to the dark side, though Plagueis himself remained a mysterious figure to the Jedi and their allies well into the time of the Galactic Alliance.

This could explain why Yoda told Luke. "Strong am I with the force but, not that strong." .. He learned somehow that Plagueis had cheated death.

So it looks as though the opera scene was mostly all lies to feed to Anakin to convert him, while Sidious was hiding the truth of Plagueis. Maybe he proceeded with carrying out the Empire plans because, he figured he needed to carry out what he thinks he started.

Maybe Plagueis tricked Sidious into believing he was doing the right thing to carry things out and Plagueis stayed clear of him because, he knew what I mentioned earlier of the Empire failing and building his Sith army. Sidious was lead to believe something else.

What that is, we may not know until the film comes out.

My last post is fairly long, so I hope you don't mind me starting a new post.

The more I think about it. Maybe it was Qui-Gon who told Yoda of Plagueis cheating death. It's mentioned in a deleted scene from Episode VI that Yoda is the reason that Obi-Wan didn't tell Luke of his father in Episode IV. So it's clear that Yoda knew more then he let on, as did Obi-Wan. They just didn't spill the beans so to speak because, they wanted Luke's focus on Vader and not elsewhere.

James Luceno mentions how the book originally was a race between who could overcome death with Qui-Gon and Plagueis. So maybe once Qui-Gon discovered the path through being one with the force, he could see things that the normal force users could not.

Bit odd that Starwars.com recently posted the opera scene on their website.

Don't think they would if it wasn't important to the sequels.

It's interesting it was posted near the time of the leaked title "The Ancient Fear" was released.

I actually think plagueis will be the villain. I think he has the best fit for the rumors and concept art so far in VII, and it seems to tie together nicely with books and the PT, but as someone else pointed out on here a Muun doesn't look particularly scary. I'd rather it was more like a human character such as Darth Bane or Dath Malgus. Unless they create some badass helmet or mask to make it edgier.

Besides he would be the master and, A he might not feature that much if at all in VII, and B I'm sure he has at least one apprentice to fill the bad guy role for this one.

If it is Plagueis he wouldn't be in his Muun body, he would be an entity looking to posses a fine young force user like I don't know, Daisy Ridley? haha. Same would go for Darth Bane

Right... because Plagueis and Bane were both known cross dressers...

(Ok, for Bane this is partly true...)

My only concern is that Plagueis as a villian, isn't iconic in design to go up against what Vader did for the whole of the SW universe.

He simply looks like any other background character in the cantina.

And a good film, is as only as good as it's villian is visually and personality wise to measure the wieght of the heroes.

Nothing could be more iconic than an entire legion of Sith warriors coming over the hill...

    I'm feeling The Darth Plagueis
Kinda gives "The Phantom Menace" a whole new twist, right ?

Sidious seduction of Anakin was the tale of Darth Plagueis "The Wise"... Darth Sidious told the story to well. There were a lot of 1st account descriptions in the telling of that old Sith Legend.

    A Sith Lord,
Dark Plagueis, learned to cheat death through is knowledge of the dark side of the force.

What would the equivalent of that feat be for a Jedi Master ?
Retaining your identity - Force Ghost

I believe we've seen what a Sith's belief of cheating death is, in Vader & Grievous.
A mutation/fusion of technology & tissue -"He's more machine now, than man"

Darth Sidious did make a mental note when only finding Yoda's robe. He ordered for the search for Yoda to continue, but he made a note, right before, sensing that Darth Vader was in trouble.

Darth Vader obviously took note after striking down Obi-Wan & seeing him vanish leaving only his robe.

What would a Sith Lord that hadn't learned the feat of cheating death through the dark-side experience ?

A Sith Lord's spirit would spend eternity & beyond in a blinded search & for what it can never find.

Could a Sith Lord possess a living force sensitive being for short periods of time ?

Could a Sith Lord possess a clone, full time ?

Did Darth Plagious ever meet Shimmi Skywalker ?
    Posses someone close to her
Knocked her up & left her w/no memory of what had happened ?
    I am your Grandfather

Did Darth Plagious ever have a daughter ? Maybe, on Naboo.
Maybe, Darth Sidious was ordered by Darth Plagious's to begin his rise as a politician & to watch over (Think-Obi-Wan watching over Luke on Tatooine) his daughter on Naboo while he stayed behind the curtain & The Jedi's mistaken belief in the rule of 2 ?

I think someone mentioned it earlier but, the more I think about it, maybe Obi-Wan sensed Sidious and Plagueis.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: I have a bad feeling about this.

    Qui-Gon Jinn: I don't sense anything.

Kenobi: It's not about the mission, Master. It's something... elsewhere. Elusive.

Qui-Gon: Don't center on your anxieties, Obi-Wan. Keep your concentration here and now, where it belongs.

Kenobi: But Master Yoda says I should be mindful of the future.

Qui-Gon: But not at the expense of the moment. Be mindful of the living Force, young Padawan.

It can't be about the Trade Federation. I think I remember hearing that Plagueis was beside Sidious when the Federation contacted him about the Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. Maybe Sidious and Plagueis were busy coming up with a plan because, Sidious did sound particularly irritated he was disturbed by the Federation, even more than usual.

This could be where a lot of those flashbacks will come in. Maybe they don't necessary involve Leia as it's been reported but, of Plagueis.

Messa thinks that would make to much sense. ;)

Not sure though because, it is not until later does Obi-Wan meet Anakin. Don't know anything Anakin could be doing that is "elusive".

I for one don't think the flashback will be about Leia, even in the face of growing opposition to my belief I think the flashback will be explaining Driver's order and show his master retrieving the Lightsaber at Cloud City (hence Vader will be in the flashback)

Aw yis! Finally some grandfather talk. I'm of a mind that the 9 films follow the Skywalker family good and bad, so whomever the villain is in Episode VII needs to have a blood line connection.

The art of the Grave Robber looking at the helmet is filled with a longing, almost as if the GR regrets not being able to protect his son/science experiment.

Though if that is Plagueis and he could foresee the future, why sacrifice his 'son' in his revenge plot against Sheev? Collateral damage? Or perhaps he could only see so far, and could never predict the good in Anakin rising in the end.

Still bugs me on two accounts: Muuns are a poorly designed species, and their bald skinny 5-head look seems to be canon. Ugh. Yet the only alternative would involve this force-jumping possession technique, which feels so cheap and out of place in Star Wars.

Back to the villain tying to the Skywalker bloodline: if not Grandpappy Plageious, I think it will be Driver working with a secret villain, perhaps Lady Vader aka his Mommy Dearest, Leia.

Come at me bros! I welcome even the most killjoy among you to post drive-by snipes wherein:

    A. You say I'm wrong, because you're right
    B. You say I'm right, but you said it first and link your posts

I'm kidding. Let's keep it lively and fun. This isn't a competition. Open your mind, entertain different POVs in a friendly manner, and the Cantina can only get better! Wooot!
