Lucasfilm recently updated their website with its current executive hierarchy, but that does not mean those involved just earned their current roles. Star Wars fans, social media accounts, and blogs lit up the internet today because someone noticed the change on the studio's website, but it turns out Dave Filoni has been an Executive Creative Director at Lucasfilm since last summer. And to clear up any confusion, he is one of several people with that title, including Doug Chiang and John Knoll.

We reached out to Lucasfilm publicity for clarification and details on this and are awaiting a response, as we were surprised Filoni would receive such a promotion without a press release, considering he is universally loved by fans and it would be a no-brainer public relations win for the company. Now it is clear why there wasn't one, he's been in the role for almost a year.

Adam B. Vary of Variety tweeted that a representative confirmed Filoni has held the Executive Creative Director position since last summer, and that the website just hadn't been updated.

As we mentioned earlier, Filoni isn't the lone wolf (yes I did that on purpose) with that title. That designation also belongs to longtime legendary Lucasfilm creative genius Doug Chiang and ILM's John Knoll (who is also the reason Rogue One exists).

So yes Dave Filoni is an Executive Creative Director at Lucasfilm (not the), but that promotion didn't just happen, it happened almost a year ago. We have all known Filoni's stock was only going to rise with the company, and for someone who is known as the understudy of George Lucas, anytime Filoni rises in the creative ranks within the company is a good thing.

We will update this piece if we get our own clarification/confirmation from Lucasfilm.

Awesome. now he needs to be promoted by replacing Katherine Kennedy! No, I don't hate her but just think he would be perfect as the main boss

Meanwhile, maybe he can climb the ranks as main/the executive creative director though

He has not the experience to take on Kennedy's role. Furthermore I doubt he would even want to her job.

Stands to reason as a long term employee he'd get recognition alongside Knoll and Chiang. Congratulations to him. Clearly, Star Wars recent successes in the Disney era are down in part to the contributions of people like him.

But how is Filoni the "understudy" to Lucas? He's never been the owner/chairman/president of a movie studio or even shadowed anyone in that role. He has a background in story development for animated projects and then as director of Clone Wars animated movie and series. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, it was Kennedy who put him in charge of Rebels and then made him head of all Lucasfilm animation, and then put him together with Faverau, moving him into live action. He's arguably had more advancement and influence under Kennedy than at any time before.

This is not a dig at Lucas or anyone. Lucas certainly gave him his start. But there's too much apocrypha and head canon tossed around about what people behind the scenes are and why. People saying that Filoni "is considered" Lucas's understudy are saying that because they want it to be true. If it were true, then why is he only the third creative executive named at LFL? When was the press release for John Knoll and Doug Chiang's coronations?

Filoni should absolutely NOT be promoted to head LFL. He is, IMHO, much better served making SW content than running the company. Besides, Kennedy is doing a very fine job, indeed.

Congrats on last year's promotion, Chiang, Knoll, & Filoni :D

A good sign. But KK, Hidalgo and all those toxic employees need to go.

You can wish for KK to go, but she won’t. Disney made that very clear.

Filoni has had such an impact on the shape of this Star Wars universe over the years. We saw that in CW and we have been seeing that with Mando. With time, he can easily become the head of all pf Star Wars. Maybe just a tad bit more experience. I mean he has the creativity and clearly the work ethic. When I think of SW, I think of Lucas. But, time moves on. Star Wars changes. So I think Filoni would be amazing and being the next Lucas. Ok, well saying that out loud seems like too much. Not the next Lucas, but yall get my idea ;)

As far as KK, as the leader of that organization, I hold her responsible for the overall climate and culture of the organization. There are certain signs and occurrences that have happened recently to lead me to believe the culture of that organization is toxic. It is definitely not a place I could work, with its current leadership.

I've heard a lot of rumors about Kathleen Kennedy being a bad boss, and it is something I find very concerning, but I'm also reluctant to judge her based solely on speculation.

But as far as I know, there is one fact about Kathleen Kennedy that is basically undisputed: She doesn't love Star Wars.

I'm not saying she hates Star Wars. She might even like Star Wars. But she doesn't love it. She is more of a businesswoman rather than a SW fanatic. And if you ask me, that's enough to want her gone. ;)

well the firing of a certain actress from a certain very popular streaming series certainly isn’t “speculation”

And here we go again on this topic….

Exactly. As the old saying goes, never make your best sales person manager. A producer is the person responsible for finding and launching a project; arranging financing financing; hiring writers, a director, and key members of the creative team; and overseeing all elements of pre-production, production and post-production, right up to release. There is no evidence that Filoni can do this. And even if that is the case there is no evidence whatsoever that he would do things differently than the present producer. I've seen interviews with him, he seems to be a smart man with a lot of depth. I don't see him just wanting to produce just CW stuff over and over again. Especially when the success of the ST has shown that there is an audience out there for depth and substance.
