I say yes, when the death star kills a planet for testing this causes Galen to defect.

I would say not against a planet... Maybe an asteroid or something like that...

Tarkin: Princess Leia, before your execution, I'd like you to join me for a ceremony that will make this battle station operational. No star system will dare oppose the Emperor now.
Leia: The more you tighten your grip, Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers.
Tarkin: Not after we demonstrate the capabilities of this station.

If they had already destroyed a planet, wouldn't everyone know about it already?

Edit: Well, it could be a uninhabited moon from some remote planet.. My point is more about it being uninhabited so that people would not have heard about it yet...

I think we will see it destroying a planet, maybe the planet we saw in the teaser which I'm guessing the Death Star was built around. A remote planet no one has heard of and will not miss, which they destroy just to test the station's power, and make sense as to why Tarkin ordered the destruction of Alderaan (a core planet) to make a demonstration to the entire galaxy.

I'm of the opinion that no, we're not going to see it, primarily because the operational use of the DS was apparently in question in ANH. I think that if the DS had test fires on any large planetary body that it would have been noticed by somebody. An explosion like that is going to be picked up on somebody's radar, kind of like we see supernova explosions light years away......someone would've noticed.

Hmm I would be cool with that, I always thought the planet from the teaser was supposed to be Alderaan...
What was the planet they said where it was built in the Tarkin novel?

Or covered up. Some remote planet in the outer rim would be a viable test target without having anyone to know what happened. Or this is the reason why Rouge one knows about the Death Star because something like this happened.

If, and it's a pretty big IF, maybe Geonosis? No one would miss that bug hive. And once the Death Star has been completed you could argue their usefulness would have expire as no one could foresee it's destruction.

No can do. Aphra and Vader visit the planet in between ANH and ESB.

Edit: the planet is sterilized at the point we see it during OT time, and we don't exactly know how the Empire did it, yet, while Aphra comments that it must have been a serious weapon.

Galen as in TFU? That's no longer "canon". I don't think the Death Star is ever fired befor ANH as Tarkin says that this "test" will be the ultimate show of power through the entire Galaxy .

If Alderaan appears in Rogue One then I believe we will get a brief glimpse from the planet's surface as the Death Star destroys it at the end. If not then it will probably test fire on some uninhabited asteroid or moon.

I would say most likely no we won't see it fire. Just as others have pointed out, I have always been under the impression that the destruction of Alderaan was the first time it was fired.

Yeah and it's sort of like how we see the "fully operational station" thing in ROTJ too .
