My money is on the DS II. There is more connection to the Emperor and the DS II in my mind simply because he "died" there.

The emperor has most people assuming the 2nd DS, which is logical due to that's where he died and we seen him on screen.

However, it's quite possible Vader had a room, temple, holocron or all sorts of artifacts connected to the Emperor on the 1st one. I'm certain Vader and Tarkin at least had a meeting room similar to what Vader used on his Super SD where he/they communicated with Palpatine.

I'm not sold it's the 2nd. I favor it, about 60/40 in favor of the 2nd, but I'm not counting out the first DS. I think Yavin's temples would be an amazing place to have a duel. Vines, dangerous plants or animals, traps in the temples, old rebel flags and equipment as a back drop. I'm not expecting Exar Kun like in the Jedi Academy book series, but who knows. Maybe Palpatine takes Exar Kun's place? Maybe the medal Leia is holding is a key to some storage safe the Rebels had to abandon in the evacuation after the battle of Yavin?

Misdirection is one of JJ's specialty, I'm not underestimating him.

Pretty sure it must be 2nd one.

And that an encounter between Rey/Palpatine/Kylo (some variation of those characters) will happen in the throne room because just like TFA had a sand planet, a planet destroying beam and a mentor killed on a bridge...this film TROS will feature a sand planet with a skiff, an incopelte death star and a throne room confrontation with palpatine...it rhymes, like in a very obvious posssibly even lazy way.

If this is the 2nd DS then the planet is definitely not Endor.
Assuming the reactor blew directly in the center of the station, the section we saw in the trailer would have blown away from Endor and not towards it.
It could have been drifting in space around until being caught by another planet's gravity.

Since JJ loves ANH and we're quite possibly going back to the Massassi Temple ruins (assumption based on shooting location), my bet is squarely on DS1.

There's no reason, story-wise, why it has to be DS2... 'cause we have no idea what the story concerning the downed Death Star is going to be. This might not be where Palpatine's ghost is encountered in the movie (assuming he'll return as a ghost), or it may be that place but Palpatine has anchored his essence to several objects/sites to maximize his chance of surviving his own death, or (as others mentioned) there could simply be a holocron or something hidden in those ruins, or... we may be talking about a force connection of sorts (akin to Rey touching Luke's lightsaber). We simply don't know, but we do know for a fact that JJ loves ANH and that production has returned to the Yavin 4 hangar base set, ergo I think this must link to that and be DS1 :)

I know they're not canon anymore, but that doesn't mean that something as simple as a topographical influence still can't be taken from them... so I'd just like to to point out that the planet they're on below looks pretty much identical to the mountainous plains of Endor as per the Ewoks movies. Plus they've already gone as far as to make the Gorax, Blurrg, Dulok and Wistie species canon again recently (not saying we'll see those, but Star Wars has certainly already brought back elements of the old Ewoks EU, to simply have Endor have some mountainous plains again as it was previously conceived is hardly overly ridiculous):

There are Oceans on the forest moon of endor:

And near by the DS2 is a reddish planet while Kylo is fighting in a reddish area:

Yavin 4 has water as well. That doesn't mean it has to be Y4 (there's even a lake behind the Rebel temple base), but the fact that Endor has water certainly doesn't disqualify Yavin 4.

I think from a story point, DSII makes the most sense. The Emperor died on it, Anakin was redeemed and died on it, Luke turned away from the dark side on it. DSI is just where they met Leia.

Well I don't know, but if it's #2 on the Forest Moon, we'd BETTER get to see EWOKS, and I MEAN IT!!

    I actually wouldn't mind that! :)

I know I am overthinking it because really they can do whatever they want, but to me the DS2 makes more sense. As others have pointed out, there is the Palpatine connection. But something which occurred to me is that the 2nd DS orbited the Forest Moon of Endor, whereas the original Death Star was in orbit around the actual planet Yavin, not the moon..... that would imply to me that the original DS fell into the gas giant, whereas the DS2 would have fallen to the Forest Moon....

But, of course, I highly doubt the physics laid out above would prevent them from doing a storyline they want if they wanted Yavin.....

Don't forget that the DSI was at one time Palpatine and Vader's pride and joy:

On a side note, (and I've never paid this much attention to the details of this scene til now) there are several large pieces of debris that are clearly intact that are seen in both the space and ground shots from the Forest Moon of Endor in ROTJ. Not only that, but the debris in both scenes are identical in location, trajectory, size etc (circled below). I don't know if Lucas intended to have characters in his version of the sequel trilogy find pieces of this Death Star, but it sure looks like he paid very close attention to detail in this scene. The circled red area appears to be the largest remaining section of the Death Star II that we can see in both of these scenes.

All we need is a 10 second close up of Wicket (now a grey-haired tribe leader) in front of a bunch of Ewoks.. that would be awesome.

Especially since in canon the rebels created a force field to protect Endor from the falling debris. however it did say that it cause some eco changes to the planet...but for me I feel DeathStar II and also I feel fair enough about the rings, as someone who works in VFX that probably isnt the finished show, hell it might not even been in the film (Running Rey anyone from TLJ) but yeah I feel the Emperor would be haunting that much like Momen (sp check) in the Vader comic with the helmet? just a thought

There's also a production shot or leaked still of Daisy Ridley as Rey in her white gear with staff in a forest that looks 100% like Endor, it could be another planet but the Flora is identical to Endor so thats something. Could also be TAKODANA I suppose.

Guys, it's Death Star 3. The scene in the trailer is at the end of the movie, after it was destroyed by Starkiller Base II.
